First time I heard the names of the drummers that would do the auditions, the second I heard them say "Mike Mangini" I knew they would pick him! Portnoy is still my greatest influence in drumming but I highly respect Mangini! Great choice DT! Can't wait to buy the next album!

it's funny to see how most people had no idea of who was mike mangini before he joins DT, and how they labeled him as "boring" only because he doesn't make a brutal solo like portnoy did.. mangini can get over portnoy technically and in velocity, i'm a drummer and i follow both since many years..

Come on... cannot compare two solos from two different drummers... specially with so poor quality videos/audio.

MP was much more pyrotechnic and "brutal", MM is surgical in his precision.

The problem is that MP was the Dream Theater icon, MM will never be. But it's probably the best replacement possible.

You know, everyone with a bit of understanding of drums, or music study would appreciate and realize this as a superb solo. It's tech as hell and Portnoy Would Never be able to full this off. But then again, it's not about how hard it is (MM can do thing 54564654 harder) but about how musically you can put a solo setting.

And to you who said that Mangini's solo sucked is simply indicative of how musically clueless you are. Go check his bio and see some of his past performances. The man was a Berkeley professor...His playing is so intelligent and so crafted that maybe you feel like you're listeing to the average session drummer when in fact you are listening to a masermind of the drums.

Mangini's rhythmic understanding and execution precision is unparalleled. He is no Portnoy but that's a good thing , not a bad thing. The band is moving forward. He's got an academic precision and none of the posing qualities that Portnoy possesed,which were everything that was wrong with Dream Theater in the last few years.

Come on.... This was a TERRIBLE solo. Never saw worse. He might be "the bullet that killed Jesus" but he doesn't seem to be creative. Compare this solo to Portnoy's (no, I don't love Portnoy) in Once In A Live Time. I still think Minnemann would have been a better choice.

All the drum lines in this show were written by MP (except On the back of angels and the solo), he was an important part of DT. I repeat, it's nice that Mangini is appreciated, but we can't forget all the nice work MP have done for DT.

@knguro21 I don't think anyone thought MP "was DT." That's ridiculous. He was the main spokesman for the band, along with JP, and handled most of the aspects of the band and its image, but it's always been a collaborative effort. I also don't think Portnoy was pulling the band down, though one could certainly argue that he had a major say in their overall direction. Things have probably become a bit more democratic in the group now. Also, Mangini's the perfect drummer to play in DT now.

@MrLodeus : i found mangini really scared by the pressure of his role... And if i must be honest, i did NOT found his touch so awesome like Portnoy had. MP has that kind of freshness, cleanliness touch on the skins and cymbals that for me's unambiguos at all. I heard Mangini keeping NOT the same volume and sound during his overall performance, especially on the snare. I found him Great, this solo is quite good, he played very well, but i miss Portnoy :P
