  • Thank you for clearing that up guys. I was confused about them stating he hit 990 km/h and broke the speed of sound. So the speed of sound changes based on the density and temperature of the surrounding atmosphere. Makes perfect sense. So he didn't break the sos, but for his altitude he came pretty damn close.

  • Scott Kittinger , Number One American Badass!

  • Isn't there a guy who is going to beat kittinger's record?

  • @3dgun yes, Felix Baumgartner. Kittinger is also part of this new project! It's called "Red Bull Stratos"

  • Actually in Normal Atmospheric Cond. Sea-level @ 59F S.of Sound=761mph

11km-20km (-70f)=660mph 29km-40km (-53F) =673mph; then speed increases due to lack of resistance caused by lack of frictional atmosphere (-1.4mph) per 1km increase in altitude "if I remember correctly"

  • check out the vid The Universe The Edge of Space..(5 part series) They show the possibility of skydiving from space.. I know someone had done it, that is what got me to look this vid up..

  • he didnt even get close to breaking the sound barrier. terminal velocity for a human is only about 180 miles per hour.

  • @AlexN5142

True....but that only applies to objects at sea level on Earth. Joe Kittinger jumped literally from the edge of space, above 98 percent of our atmosphere. He was at an altitude that was practically a vacuum. Due to the lack of atmosphere to slow him down, he continued accelerating under the pull of gravity. He slowly began to slow down after reaching his terminal velocity of 614 mph at 90,000 ft (after 2 miles of falling). By the time he pulled his chute, he was down to 120 mph.

  • @normanforlife

he reached over 700 mph not 614

  • @deltapunk21

You are wrong. Joe Kittinger states that he hit 614 mph. Some sources incorrectly list his top speed as 714 mph.

  • Well, since he was in space, there is no air resistance whatsoever. I believe he actually reached somewhere 713mph. Still not sound barrier. but VERY close.

  • Actually, he hit 614 mph.

  • he tells that he broke but its more like a legend to an old man that made a pretty fucking awsome thing.....im like to keep the lie of the barrier of sound....

  • He didn't break the sound barrier even though you would think he'd have fallen faster with those two huge brass balls of his.

  • As well as being the first human to break the sound barrier un-aided, he was technically the first human in space due to the height at which he jumped from.

  • he didnt break the sound barrier he was just under

  • Hardly 102,800 feet is still in the stratosphere

  • i didn't know 31 kilometers was actually space

  • If he tried to jump from that high without a stabilization suit, he'd be dead before he even made it halfway up...air pressure at that altitude is about 1/100th of what it is on the surface

  • What? your joking right. This is documented

  • idiot!

  • 13 min and 35 seconds. up to 614 mph

  • it tuk 32 mins gawd!

  • 15 i thought...

  • i'd do that jump to see the blackness of space (although they didnt show that footage)! that would be LIVing

  • The announcer is BUTCHERING his name. It's pronounced 'Kit-ing-er'. Not 'Kit-in-jer'.

  • and he walks away.

  • Why has'nt anyone jumped from this altitude again?

  • humm ok would you jump it?

  • i do that junp all the time in my mind

  • lol yeah but thats a good question though how far with modern technology can someone jump. What altitude is the atmosphere where your'l burn up I think that'l be the limit. Im gonna have to email the air force as thats a good question.

  • because its to fukin hard, 1 of the only avation records that still stands

  • how long did it take him to get back to the ground?

  • 4 1/2 days.

  • lol not 4 1/2 days lol, it wook about 13 and a hlaf minutes

  • would it have been possible that the balloon could have taken him into outer space, so that earth's gravity wouldn't have been able to pull him back? i didn't really think it took 4.5 days. but i think it took at least 6 hours to get back to earth from when he jumped.

  • lol no 13 minutes.. the slow rising of the balloon took 3 hours so how would a 600 mile per hour fall take twice as long?

  • 124000 feet i heard

  • someone is about to try for 120000 feet topping this record

  • Ill top it with 200,000 feet :P

  • yes. clearly he had an oxygen mask on

  • The air is very thin, did he have any oxigen with him?

  • me love,me love oh yeh

  • does anyone know if that french guy fournier succeded in breakin kittingers record

  • the only thing a french guy can do well is surrender to germany.

  • Now that's funny. The french are pussies that make excuses for everything.

  • plus they strike every 5 minutes as well. French Eating surrender monkies lol

  • "plus they strike every 5 minutes as well. French Eating surrender monkies lol"

At least they do something about their rights, we just sit on our asses and let the government do anything they want.

  • i want to be like that guy some day.

  • the world record is 130,000 feet, space tops out at 300,000ft well I guess we can try

  • Actually, the world record is 102800 feet set by the guy in this video. Joseph Kittenger Jr. NOBODY has jumped from higher. look it up

  • ok sorry, I mistook the info I thoght it said 130,000 when it said 103 thousand

  • that is sooooo awesome, that owns any HALO jump

  • I want to do this....soooo badly

  • First!

  • First reply!

  • Who cares?

  • I care when your Momma swallows

  • Wow, you just embarresed yourself BIG TIME! Shut up dipshit or I'll shut your mouth for you. NOBODY cares if you was the first comment asshole! I don't even why I replied on a such a dumb reply. Stay off YouTube.
