Thank you for clearing that up guys. I was confused about them stating he hit 990 km/h and broke the speed of sound. So the speed of sound changes based on the density and temperature of the surrounding atmosphere. Makes perfect sense. So he didn't break the sos, but for his altitude he came pretty damn close.
Actually in Normal Atmospheric Cond. Sea-level @ 59F S.of Sound=761mph
11km-20km (-70f)=660mph 29km-40km (-53F) =673mph; then speed increases due to lack of resistance caused by lack of frictional atmosphere (-1.4mph) per 1km increase in altitude "if I remember correctly"
check out the vid The Universe The Edge of Space..(5 part series) They show the possibility of skydiving from space.. I know someone had done it, that is what got me to look this vid up..
True....but that only applies to objects at sea level on Earth. Joe Kittinger jumped literally from the edge of space, above 98 percent of our atmosphere. He was at an altitude that was practically a vacuum. Due to the lack of atmosphere to slow him down, he continued accelerating under the pull of gravity. He slowly began to slow down after reaching his terminal velocity of 614 mph at 90,000 ft (after 2 miles of falling). By the time he pulled his chute, he was down to 120 mph.
Well, since he was in space, there is no air resistance whatsoever. I believe he actually reached somewhere 713mph. Still not sound barrier. but VERY close.
he tells that he broke but its more like a legend to an old man that made a pretty fucking awsome thing.....im like to keep the lie of the barrier of sound....
As well as being the first human to break the sound barrier un-aided, he was technically the first human in space due to the height at which he jumped from.
If he tried to jump from that high without a stabilization suit, he'd be dead before he even made it halfway up...air pressure at that altitude is about 1/100th of what it is on the surface
lol yeah but thats a good question though how far with modern technology can someone jump. What altitude is the atmosphere where your'l burn up I think that'l be the limit. Im gonna have to email the air force as thats a good question.
would it have been possible that the balloon could have taken him into outer space, so that earth's gravity wouldn't have been able to pull him back? i didn't really think it took 4.5 days. but i think it took at least 6 hours to get back to earth from when he jumped.
Wow, you just embarresed yourself BIG TIME! Shut up dipshit or I'll shut your mouth for you. NOBODY cares if you was the first comment asshole! I don't even why I replied on a such a dumb reply. Stay off YouTube.
Come shut my mouth for me, Max. Please. Next time you kiss your Momma her breath might smell like shit from sucking my ass. Here's the photos at YourMommaSwallows dot com.
Haha, I am worried about you. Do you even have friends in school? Are you one of those bullies or what? I don't care what immature reply you send me back next time, I'M NOT GONNA ANSWER TO THAT. I have better things to do dipshit!

@3dgun yes, Felix Baumgartner. Kittinger is also part of this new project! It's called "Red Bull Stratos"

he didnt even get close to breaking the sound barrier. terminal velocity for a human is only about 180 miles per hour.

he reached over 700 mph not 614

You are wrong. Joe Kittinger states that he hit 614 mph. Some sources incorrectly list his top speed as 714 mph.

He didn't break the sound barrier even though you would think he'd have fallen faster with those two huge brass balls of his.

lol no 13 minutes.. the slow rising of the balloon took 3 hours so how would a 600 mile per hour fall take twice as long?
