  • where the wild majestic mountains stood alone against the Sun

  • Gordon Lightfoot is still amazing live, even at 73. When he plays, he plays with emotion and with purpose. There is only one Gordon Lightfoot. He's lived a hard life. It's not an easy life being a musician and Canada is very proud to have him as a musical icon.

  • He is as good, if not better here then He ever was.

    I appreciate...Him.

Take a look at Ode to Big Blue...true Lightfoot.

  • I met Gordon many years ago, a pure gentleman. He is the kindest most patient man I have met in many years. His voice may not be the same but his lyrics and voice still bring the chills out of me. What a representative of a generation! May he live long and healthy. Gordon we still listen and learn from you.

  • I was in the womb for my first Gordon Lightfoot Concert. (cheap seats at Maple Leaf Gardens - maybe explains some of my unique personality traits!!) I still get chills everytime I hear this song! What a fantastic piece of canadian songwriting!! Without a doubt one of my all time favorite songs!!

  • Amen! The man is a genius--Damn the critics--the world's best lyricist--truly the minstrel for the baby boomer generation!

  • Pure genius. A real critic might call the rhythmic and tonal phrases used to depict a steam engine train unsophisticated. It's a good thing Gordon Lightfoot doesn't write his music for the real critics. Thank you for the music Gordon Lightfoot. You've enriched my life for over 40 years.

  • this guy is frickin amazing. don't matter how old he gets; listening to this version still gave me chills and totally stopped time around me. brilliant, brilliant music

  • GOD rest your soul terry clements, we all miss you

  • they are idiots ur the smart one never forget it

  • when the wild majestic mountains stood alone against the Sun

  • @Syzygy60 this song fits most of teh civlised world Eh?, to me it does, it to me speaks of a young country reaching out. its people growing, reaching out to better themselves and their home

  • there was a time in this great land when the railroad did not run

  • This is fantastic, especially considering what he's been through the past few years.

  • his voice is fine the acoustics suck

  • sry to ruin 4 u,I just have a super memory that expands the average politicians knowledge of lying and cheating

  • get gord's gold has every song u wanna hear except wreck of Edmund fitzgerald

    and black day in july

  • Gordy is the troubadour of the last 50 years,he's my hero

  • it merely verifies their weakness

  • I hate ppl who think hurting animals or ppl make them strong

  • if any of u tough guy hunters have anything to say to me about strength and killing and hating animals to justify ur inferiority,I'll gladly knock u out as u stand there ! BIO

  • sry,I just am finally getting over putting my 20 year old cat Taja to sleep last May,,I use humor to hide the pain

  • @Syzygy60 I understand. It hurts so much, and it can take years to recover if you're weak in any other way, which I am. My Bonny was such an amazing dog and I miss her so much.

  • How can anyone knock him. His voice is not what it was for sure but he still sings in tune and the emotion and feel is as good if not better than all those years ago. He is a legend

  • Please be kind! His voice may be shot, but I want Gord to love to be 100!

  • @Sutterjack it is not his voice that is shot it is his memory. long live gord

  • @Sutterjack His voice sounds fine to me. It's always been such a beautiful resonant singing voice, and it still is.

  • @Sutterjack and longer Eh?, his voice isnt shot. to me its gold

  • I hate to say it but I love Gordy but is time to put this cat to sleep!

  • I've loved the man and his music for over 40 years. Keep on going, Gord!

  • this recording should be in the canadian smithsonian,or a better recording but this song describes you

  • amazing to think how many times and how many places, large and small, he has sung this wonderful ballad.

  • gordon is such an amazing singer and guitar player . his music doesn't age at all !!!

  • This really makes your hair stand on end. What a brilliant performance by Gordon and co, absolutely ace and his vocal range is just what it was in the 70's. Gordon Lightfoot we love you man.

  • I'm American. I'm 57. I've loved this song for over 40 years. Always brings a tear to my eyes. America and Canada have been friends for a long, long time through thick and thin.

  • One thing I notice is that his guitar playing is exactly the same as it was in the 60's

  • My town is tearing up its railway, so I reworked the lyrics, like tearing up those old tracks:

We are the navvies who tear up the railway

Swining' our hammers in the bright blazin' sun

Livin' on ragout and 10-proof beer by the litre

Bendin' our backs 'til the smoke break comes along.

We think of our brothers, our fathers, the ones

who built this great railway 'neath the hot blazing sun

but times have changed, the future's come and gone

and it's time to undo what others have done.

  • A toke and a cold beer with good friends and great music--life was simple and good!

  • This was an every night song after studies in college in the 70's. A toke and kick back and listen to Gordon.

  • Ah, yes my favorite Gord song! Thanks! My wife and I saw him back in 2008, but he didn't play this one.

  • He's a Living Legend!

  • Sometimes it just feels so damn good to be Canadian!

  • @rankin383 Indeed. Eh? although i am acanadian in spirit. this man is not JSUT a canadian, he is representing life EVERYWHERE

  • I saw him in concert a few months ago....he is still fantastic! The best!

  • I saw Gordon Lightfoot in the 70's. and again in the 90's. In the 90's concert i heard the Canadian Railroad Trilogy for the first time. My favorite Lightfoot tune hands down. No one can tell a story like Gordon, and there is no better songwriter.

  • Ive scene Gordy 3 times and have never hear him play this live. p.s I love when he pauses at the end.

  • Ive seen him 9 times since 1981 times and the first song I heard that I really knew he was was The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald. Iwas a freshman in college at Lake Superior State which was about 70 miles where she sank. I have been hooked ever since.

  • We saw him in '07 also...when he started in on this song, It was all I could do not to cry. To keep going after all he has been through is a blessing. His voice may not be what is was, but his heart is a big as the Canadian prairie.

  • great taste mate! any other songwriters/singers you know of pass my way. i love gordo here, and hes playin a concert this thursday in great falls. Woot!! my fienice bought us tickets for my B-day.

  • This is so awesome!

    Thank you, my mom!!!!

She turned me on to GL.

  • Hell man. I'm 15, and if I told anybody that I liked this music, they'd run me out of town. But I keep quiet, and continue to listen to him.

  • Shout it loud and shout it proud man. Gordon Lightfoot! I'm 19 and I tell everyone, regardless of all the junk on the radio

  • Hell YA!

  • My friend, I am 38 and when I was 19 I also told everyone of Gordon... most did not understand but no matter, I loved his music then and still do... got to see him last year for the first time and it was one of the greatest musical times I've ever had and I have been to many many concerts of all kinds of music... cheers for not bowing down to popular pressure!

  • Been into Gordon Lightfoot since I was 12 man...seen him several times when I lived up in Indiana. Been proud to admit to being a fan! ice to see a 15 year old with a taste in real music

  • I'm 14 and listened to Gord's Gold on my iPod for 36 hours straight once, although these versions (when it's recorded live and he's aged) seem to strike something deeper in me. My friends think there's something wrong with me, but I'm a hardcore fan and not afraid to show it. Best of luck converting your town.

  • as someone who just turned 41 i tell my kids there's a lot of music listen to what ever catches your ear .i listen to folk to metal to punk it's all great if someone doesn't like it tell them to kiss your ass

  • this guy is a gift from the hevens a writer singer ,master pianist good stuff listen to "is thier anyone home"

  • I am 17 but it's the same story

  • that's kind of sad. but hey, i think you have great taste, and you're probably smarter than the average bear. i've been listening to Gordon since i was 9 or 10. that's 39 years. hey, you should check out the Rankin family. start with "Gillis Mountain." it'll get yer toe a tappin. All the best, young man.

  • Yeah. It's really annoying how closed minded people are about things like that. But I will listen to lightfoot regardless. I'll be sure to check out that rankin family.

  • anytime you'd like a suggestion for a cool tune, you would never hear of otherwise, just ask, and i'll gladly supply you. hey, check out "City of New Orleans." there are 2 very good versions. 1 by Willie Nelson, and 1 by Arlo Guthrie. it's a railroad tune, as well. enjoy.

  • I have that song on my MP3 player, and I love it.

  • well, Mr. burlington northern and santa fe MAN, have you heard of Boxcar Willie? btw i was a trucker for a lot of years. i loved trucking songs, even before i started trucking. you might like them too. red sovine had a lot of good songs. you might like Dave Dudley's "6 days on the road" as well. enjoy!

  • I was a trucker as well.

  • @railroader1993 real friends would respect your choice of music. i met him after his knoxville tn concert, got to hold his 12 string guitar, and talk for a few minutes, he is like one of us. he does it for us. lord knows it isnt for teh money, id say he is quite wealthy and even after his health issues, he STILL coems out fo US his fans. Godspeed gordon lightfoot. i wil be afan until hte day i die

  • @railroader1993 adda boy

  • @railroader1993 Im also born in 93' I just tell everyone at my school that for the most part todays music is shitty, ive seen Gordo 4 times and got front row seats for 2 shows in May. as schoons said Shout it loud and shout it proud

  • @railroader1993 Good name of yours because I am a railroader... Also, keep true to what you like. All that crap that is being played now is brainwashed hype. Look at all the kids around you. They are all wannabe gangsters and will end up nowhere in life. If you love something, embrace it. Maybe you will turn some others onto the music and lifestyle and change lives yourself.

  • @railroader1993 Indeed shout it loud and proud. tell them to f^&k off :)

  • @railroader1993 shout it loud anyone else will wish they had ur size balls,F them life is urs to grab not to ask what other ppl like

  • @railroader1993 Man, I'm 20yrs old... I grew up on Gordon Lightfoot, maybe since I was 5yrs old. Don't be shy to say you listen to Gordon Lightfoot. :)

  • @railroader1993 i had been the same except im 36. but i still tell tehmi bring more and more into hte fold :), they challenge me with a circumstance in their life, and i can find a Gordon lightfoot song to fit it. it amazes them, then i challenge them to find a song they like that can do the same thing. most of the time they cannot

  • I am so proud of him and his band for continuing despite their age! it is so great (and rare) to listen to someone who can tell a story like he can in a song.

  • Saw Gordo last night in concert in Columbia, SC. His lyrics can reach in and grab the soul. My life is better because of the introspection that his songs causes. Godspeed and longevity Gordo!

  • I totally agree---I've always said Gord puts his heart on his sleeve in his lyrics, but it's more than that. He sings of the whole spectrum of life we all experience--loving, heartache, triumph, defeat, the longing for peace, etc etc. His lyrics DO touch the soul--a true minstrel for our generation!

  • thanx fellow commentors for the positive on GL, on some you tube video comments , there are a bunch of slammers who hate everything, . . I appreciate the upper level of gentlemanly behavior , . . .

  • Gord is the Canadian Dylan! Despite all he has been through, his voice still beats that of Mr. Zimmerman in my humble opinion (don't get me wrong, the latter is another favorite of mine).

  • Canadian Gold right there. thanks for the music Gordon

  • These guys are such professional musicians. They have been together a long, long time. They give 110 % at their shows. They are true storytellers and something to be appreciated. To see them is truly a moving experience.

  • what illness does he have? he is really the best.

  • from what i've heard he was a pretty heavy drinker in the past. he might still be, but i'm not sure. he's still a legend, though; can't take that from him.

he was in the hospital a couple of years ago for surgery on his stomach.

  • GL hasn't been drinking for 27 years. The surgery was as a result of a ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm - totally unrelated to drinking. After 6 weeks in a coma GL came back more vigorously than nearly anybody could have. His love and desire for performing brought him back to the stage after being near death. He remains a strong concert draw. He is back at age 70 and, with his long-time band, and continues to perform live to large, enthusiastic concert audiences.

  • In 2002, he underwent surgery for a ruptured Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm and remained in serious condition in the intensive care unit where he endured a six-week coma, a tracheotomy and underwent four surgeries. I'm seeing him in concert in April so I assume he is doing okay!

  • I'm going to the same concert. Wanna meet up?

  • Sure, as long as I can bring my girlfriend along!

  • No problem! I heard she's pretty cute ;)

  • Totally!

  • A treasure. Pretty good camera work too

  • I saw him live at a different recent show... as his voice cracked members of the audience cheered out in support. One guy yelled "We're with you Gordon!" I'll never forget it. It's Gordon Lightfoot, man.

  • It brings one to tears, how that magnificent baritone voice of his has been compromised over the years by illness; but it's still Gord, it's still that historic masterpiece (which brings tears to my eyes by itself - watch the Canadian Idol tribute), and the combination is unforgettable.
