An awesome player but a horrible teacher. Ive never hear do much rubbish. Different types of putting strokes for different putts? How about aim more left on left/right putts? How about hit it softer on down hill putts? The toe cover for you? haha
I remember Nick Price explaining in the late 90's how he watched videos of the great putters when he was having a bad time on the greens and found that they hit down on the ball very slightly.
Tiger has also spoke occasionally of hitting down on the ball slightly.
Great player. BUT I think much of what he says is not taught these days. equipment and techniques have changed. I say keep square and have the ball just left of centre-but dont hit down on it.
And before anyone says-yes, I know Im crap compared to him, but hey
Sorry but I can't belive the great man wants us to hit down on the putting stroke thats very wrong as far as i'm concerned the ball needs to leave the club with top spin generating roll also every putt hit into the ground with back spin pops up and bobbles all the way to the hole but never makes it because it's got no roll (not suprised he had so many 3 putts now)
Yes he was a great player by any standard, and I guess it's more a case that since this film was made teaching techniques have changed rather than him being a bad putter.
I had a very good lesson from a top class club pro teacher some years ago that has stood me very well, simple as this eyes over the ball, stand square to intended line, keep the path of swing down a dead straight line so as your putter passes bottom dead centre it starts to climb this will generate top spin and create a good roll.
Yep-spot on mate. Trevino seems to really complicate it too. So much to remember. I use the 2 Thumb grip and my putting is good. Unlike my swing-which is average, but improving!!! Kep it square, line eyes over and be consistent
@cockywatchman1976 It's not difficult to remember if you practice putting enough. Most players do not spend nearly enough time on putting, even I am guilty of it. But what he teaches is fundamentals, nothing fancy, just solid!
@pat52010 But these AREN'T modern day fundamentals. People use different putters and putt on different greens. NOONE who knows anything about golf today will teach you to hit down on the ball...NOONE!!!! Trevino learned to hit a golf ball by hitting a bottle in the air. Great as he was, he is not a model golfer
@pat52010 What he is teaching is absolutely NOT SOLID, its the opposite! Stuff that works for Trevino and probably WONT work well with today's equipment, greens, balls etc. I suggest you do a bit of research into modern day teaching before you try to tell me what solid fundamentals are! As you clearly don't understand at all
@cockywatchman1976 You can listen to whomever you want. I am telling you that what he teaches is fundamental. When it comes to putting equipment, golf balls, and certainly greens have not change that much. For example, you don't want to get flippy in the hands when putting, that my good man is fundamental. But you can follow which ever player you want for instruction but there are damn few that have more knowledge about the short game than Trevino.
@pat52010 I saw your mother, she's uglier. You may have saw my swing from OVER A YEAR AGO. I now play off 6 (many many lessons later)....you obviously play off 28 if you think these are fundamentals. PRICK
@TheBusiness55 Trevino did struggle with putting his first couple of years on tour, but he became an excellent pressure putter latter on. Lee Trevino won 89 tournaments total, which included 2 PGA's, 2 US Opens, and 2 Open Championships. He was the first player to win The US Open, The British Open(Open Championship) and the Canadian Open in the same year. I saw him play in the '68 PGA Open, he was an up and coming player at the time.

I absolutely idolise Trevino - but he was never known to be a great putter - however he was as good a grinder as anyone who has ever played the game.
When you're under pressure, down the stretch and you faced with a 12 footer for par - do whatever Lee says - he's Clutch!
