due to a VERY bad bangs haircut, my hair did the whole liza minellis cabaret curl thing. where they curled up from my ears..it was terrible, but great for this style!
You could twist your hair a curl and slick it down with gel and pin it. Or you could draw it on! We did The Boyfriend the musical in high school, and we drew the kiss curls on our heads!
Yep, you can get Mac in Australia. I'm not too sure where you are. I'm in Sydney. Around me there's a Mac pro store. You can also get it from Myers and David Jones in the city, and Myers in a lot of suburban stores.
its not good to do dark eyes with dark lips it makes it look cheap and tarty. if ur doin dark eyes go for a nude lip and if ur doin dark lips go for a simple look for the eyes or else it will end up lookin clowinish than glam.
i was just wondering why you put liquid liner on and then shadow, does this keep the makeup from creasing? my makeup easily creases, how could i prevent that?
I did the liner before the shadow in this case because I wanted the black colour to be quite intense. Without a good base colour, the black will look a little weak.
Check my website in a couple of weeks. I'm doing an article on this very question in my online mag, Frou Frou Magazine. The mag should be up Monday 17th March.
I haven't checked my messages for about a week (that is youtube video comments) because my computer crashed. If you emailed me, I have a back log of about 800 emails at the moment!
I have blonde hair and blue eyes, do i use the same colours? I have a fancy dress party and this is perfect! Also, can you point me in the right direction for the hairstyle, i've had a look on google and can't find anything that's simple enough to do. Thanks!
Women of this period usually had short straight bobs, very angular, or very wavy hairstyles. Flappers were all about shunning the restrictions made on women of the previous century. They wore short skirts, a lot of makeup, smoked, drinked, and had many lovers. So let it look free spirited, that's the key.
Wow - excellent recreation of 'flapper' makeup. Thankfully, you didn't have to use actual vintage makeup, like the mascara which was colored wax, heated and daubed on with a small orangestick. Off to check out your other videos!
o this is so freaking awesome! i have to tell all my friends about this 'cause my school is going to be doing Thoroughly Modern Millie and it would be so cool if we all had an authentic make-up look like this! thanks for posting the vid!!!
i would like to thank you for posting the music and doing most of these themed make-up because I absolutely adore flappers and pin up girls <33 thanks
all your videos are so amazing. i've done stage make up and special event make up, like weddings and prom, but i could never master this look. you're video was perfect! i tried it on myself and it looked great. thank you so much. please don't ever stop making videos!
I am so intimidated by black eyeshadows and liners. I'm so fair skinned, I'm afraid of looking harsh. I tried it once and I don't think it suits me. Looks great on her though~
I pick off the glue from the lashes... using both my fingers and tweezers. And then very gently use an oil based makeup remover (gently off by mac) and wipe them between two tissues.
All the makeup I used is listed in the description text to the right of the video. Just click on the "more info" button, and you'll see it's all there.
Nothing to do with the makeup, but I love the version of Thoroughly Modern Millie you had on. I only have the Julie Andrews version and some other one, but I can't find this one.
This is Carol Channing. I have actually found that this recording is more popular than the Julie one. I think Carol is also well known for this song. Have you tried iTunes?
please can u do me a fever and try the marilyn monroe make - up or serach for this woman TÜRKAN SORAY . she got most beautifull eyes ever and her eye make up is so awesome can u try to do it? thnx btw
Well if you happen to be in Australia or know anyone is Australia, it's from a shop called "Diva" and it's part of the Diva collection range (I think that's their special design range.) You can still buy it now. Only cost me about $30
Thanks for listing all the products! I've had black eyeshadow for ages and only used it as smoky eyeshadow because I didn't know what else to do with it. Thanks for your tutorials.
I use mostly Napoleon Perdis brushes, with a couple of Mac brushes. With the Napoleon brushes, I have no idea which number they are!!! I should really look into that!
I don't know if you can answer this question or not. How did you get those loops in her hair? I bet it's really easy but I don't know how to get my hair like that. Love you by the way.
I use a lot of gel to slick back her hair. And simply shaped the curls on her forehead with my fingers, trying to get it to stick to her head. I also needed to use some hairspray for it too.
If you look at the description text to the right of the video, you'll see that I list all the details there of the music and makeup I've used. Just click on the "more info" button.
Also so you know, incase there's anything else you're interested in, I list the music and makeup used in my videos in the description text to the right of the video. Just click on the more info button. I do this for every video.
Yeah, everyone has been saying that to me! I am going to check it out at the shops. And no, I don't think mine is soft black. If they aren't doing the black liner anymore, you may see a tear roll down my cheek!
I loved this it came out beautifully. You did a wonderful look I love the flapper girl look the 20's and 40's era had such wonderful clothing and Hairdo's. Wonderful Tut.
I have so much love for this video and this look. I Love the fashions from the 20's to the 40's. And I love the music you used. Heheh it's half the reason why I watch your vids is the music.
I L-O-V-E Singing In The Rain. I wanted to watch it today, but I can't find my DVD.
My fave scene is at the end when Lena is standing on stage about to sing and they force Debbie Reynolds behind the curtain. I laugh every single time the arm moves Lena does when the music starts. It makes me want to giggle out loud now. Hahahaaha. I had to let the giggle out!
Yes I did do the hair. I just curled the fringe using gel and stuck to her head with the gel and some hairspray. The rest of the hair is smothered in gel and pulled back into a bun/chignon.
I agree, if a small beauty mark was added, maybe by the chin like Jean Harlow did, I think it would have pulled the flapper look together even more. Otherwise, really fantastic work. I've seen many flapper make-up videos here and yours is the best by a long shot! I love the whole era so I'm familiar with the makeup of that time, and you really hit the nail on the head with it. Wish I could be one of your make-up models, you do such fun and fabulous work.
I don't know what your personal taste is, but I have had this clipping of a mac ad from years ago with Mary J Blige and Missy Elliot, with this gorgeous berry red lipstick. and smokey neutral eyes. I've loved it for years, but haven't had the right model for it!!! If you lived close to me, I'd do that look on you!
Yay! Today is my lucky day...I always watch your videos ...and oddly enough I am going to be a Flapper for Halloween! Its ever so perfect that you made a video on how to recreate that look for today! I am deffinately doing this to finish up my 1920's look:)
I HATE 20's glamour movie-star eyebrows. but you made them look a little more toned down and fabulous so I liked that ^_^ not to mention her hair was spot on ^_^<3
WOW, that is so 1920's! I can't believe it is so well made.
I have a request, can you do a late 1960's look? I know you did one for Audrey Hepburn, but this was more like early 60's style. Also a disco diva style from the late 1970's would be great.
Same here..... my mum made me watch Thoroughly Modern Millie a few years ago. She said "Amy I'm making you watch it, you'll love it". And it's one of my fave movies! And I just love Carol Channing's voice! I've been trying to find more recordings of her!
I first used gel to slick her hair into a tight bun. Then around the face, I curled her fringe in, and just sort of scultped it using gel and stuck it down with hairspray.
Beautiful! :)

Definitely, you can use the same colours. This period is defined by the strong makeup.
For hair.... I can't find much on the hair for this period either. You want to do somehting like finger waves, or like this- kiss curls.

you know, with the red lips she looks more like those spanish women with the fans and flamingo dresses...all she needs is a mole

How did you do the curled hair on the side of her face? Is it makeup?
p.s. love your vids!!!!!!!!!!

I curled her hair using gel and got it to stick to her forehead with both the gel and some hairspray.

I HATE 20's glamour movie-star eyebrows. but you made them look a little more toned down and fabulous so I liked that ^_^ not to mention her hair was spot on ^_^<3

Yeah, I did it so that you have a few features fo the time, but with a sexy modern day twist. You want to look hot, and not too cartoonish!

WOW, that is so 1920's! I can't believe it is so well made.
I have a request, can you do a late 1960's look? I know you did one for Audrey Hepburn, but this was more like early 60's style. Also a disco diva style from the late 1970's would be great.
Thanks for this great flapper make up video!

Have you seen my 60s makeup video? It's a little more mod. I'd just do that and maybe a bit of the mod eye from the Twiggy video?
askmemakeup 4 years ago
Amy, I was just searching through your videos and I found the mod eye look! GREAT! It looks fantastic! I will watch it now.
Thanks for letting me know:) Sorry I missed this one:(

You're ok! No problem at all. I do want to do a 70s disco look too! Super glossy red lips! That was SUPER glossy.
askmemakeup 4 years ago
Yes, that is great Amy. Red glossy lips and metalic eyeshadows! Very Disco... I love these videos, they are so unique!

This look was absolutely gorgeous!.. I think this was my most favorite yet. :)
