@syedmastanshah thank you for your intelligent and constructive comment. I'm sure your other comments and the way you live your life are just the same - thoughtful and meaningful.
@ashlillings This is a tutorial for beginners. I mean really basic beginners. Comment noted. Also, when you start mentioning keyboard shortcuts you have to do it for PC users and then MAC users - not into that.
@truelove929753 Option 1: Lower the top layer opacity or delete a layer. Option 2: Merge all the layers down except for the original background layer. So you have the lightened layer and the original layer left. Take the ERASER TOOL and change the opacity to 10% or less using a large brush and then just lightly erase where you want it to be darker. For instance, my mother would have liked me to do that on the now non existant jaw line on the right.
@nytwuolfe It won't increase the size of the photo if you merge down the layers (go to LAYERS then MERGE LAYERS). I always save as a TIFF or PSD first then if I want a smaller a file I save it as a JPEG.
@eastsaintlouis62203 I know it's available in CS3, CS4 and CS5. I think it would be in all the editions of photoshop. If you go to the layer options: normal, multiply, lighten, darken, etc... screen should be there.
For all the haters out there, lynda.com recently came out with a CS5 tutorial: "Improving underexposure using blending". It's all about the screen blending mode to brighten dark photos.
Please do leave comments about what a waste of time this was for you to view (really, it's only 1:53 in the scheme of things and you must be about 10 years old if that is your attention span). This is meant as a SUPER EASY, QUICK and DIRTY way to experiment with layers and the screen mode to salvage a photograph.

Ctrl-J is waaaaaay faster than dragging the layer to the create new layer button each time. Use keyboard shortcuts!!
