I found ff12 as an awesome game and story. Who would ever thought that a thief who wants to be a sky pirate would have a hell of an adventure like that? I must say, that's not your average story where a guy would be entangled in the battle for the nethicites along with sky pirates, fighting against monsters especially espers, and taking on the empire.
This final fantasy is totally different from other final fantasy series, also different from FF13. . People who'd hate this should not even watch anything related to this game. . Really, all final fantasy games is awesome! None of them is bad but I love this Final Fantasy XII and Final Fantasy IX so much! But then again, for me this Final Fantasy XII is the greatest ever! if you give a lot of shit about this games, you'd better throw out this game to trash, if you already do it, GOOD :)
@yukiharvestfans I can relate to your insight in this , this game is different then all Final Fantasy games , but then the whole series is about making every part spacial , but I have to disagree with you in all Final Fantasy series are awesome ! I was underwhelmed By X and X-2 that it made me relatively not so enthusiastic to play this part , good thing that I did though .
One more thing , there's not so many who'll see IX as one of there favorite it's one of my favorites too : )
This game has so much going for it. I'm going to give it another chance. It's so beautiful with such good music and voice acting. It by far has the best Final Fantasy atmosphere. I honestly can't even remember the story line to judge it. The game play and gambits were phenomenal. Really why I ditched this was because the License Board sucked and the game play/story ratio was too play-time heavy. I'd love if they took the world and the graphics engine and made a brand new game for the 3DS.
i've played other final fantasy games but this is the only i couldn't end with all summons and other stuff and i always wanted to kill yiazmat but sometime i will play this game again :)
Why do people complain about Penelo? I mean sure she didn't have a real reason to be there like Vaan but she was a more helpful asset to the team and her personality is strong willed and kind. Larsa's still the best character in the game though... Probably one of the best in FF history.

Uggh...Vaan´s English voice is disgusting, first time I actually hate one of the voice actors in a FF game (of the recent ones with voice acting), it was done by some stupid rapper white kid who´s now in some form of girly boy-band.
I also hated how they ran into limitations here with the PS2, like the muffled voice acting...since they released it LATE in the PS2´s life (I know it´s still being made though) I would have prefered if they had released this on PS3.

@keivalleth Yeah, Sony is planing more of those collections like the God of war colection, there's the sly cooper collection now coming and they were talking about an ICO collection (Ico and Shadow of the Colossus)...I always thought they might make a "Final Fantasy Collection" featuring X, X-2 and XII...but I highly doubt they would do this with RPGs since it would be a lot of work...
The voice acting was good...however when I popped in the disk...I thought the audio quality was a big lacking for the voice part. It sounded....I don't know...a bit muffled up.

I liked FF12 more than FF7... ok not acctually, but the battles and all the stuff is more fun, since you can add spells and stuff, and that reminds me of FF1... makes me happy
My favorite game of Final Fantasy to date, and I've played all of them except XI and the Crystal Chronicles. This just shows the potential the series have in the future; they already successfully ammended the battle system, made a nice transition of composers, and these in-game cutscenes are much more fluid. Can't wait for the next installment.
Hey, I'm just sending a shout out to all those who replied to the comment I left a few months ago about whether or not I should buy this game. Thanks to MusicBox, Alpha, Mishaxhi, Tenor, Sess, gb, smoos, and MrLove. I bought it because of all your positive feedback, and just beat it today. It was one of the best games I've ever played, and the best twelve bucks I've ever spent. I loved every aspect of it, from the story to the battle system to Balthier's pants. Especially Balthier's pants. =)
@MegaCoolguy52 -- It wasn't the lack of romance, it was the lack of heart in general. There was little to no relationship development (friendship or otherwise) between the characters, no building of a family. They were basically just avatars going from event to event, very little depth. Great political plot, no heart to drive it home.

But what´s missing is that the story isn´t..."deep" enough, there´s very little character development and the little there is isn´t well done, I got late in the game (first time I couldn´t bring myself to finishing a FF game) without even knowing any of the characters much, and if I stopped playing for like a day or so I already forgot most of the plot points and the reasons why I´m in the place I am at the moment...
@MegaCoolguy52 Yeah, the story is decent...it needed better development and the story doesn't have to be "romantic" to make it good...but better fleshed out and "deeper" I guess could be the right word...
The game though, the game is amazing...it has SOOO much stuff I'm still playing it after years...
@MegaCoolguy52 I totally agree with you... FFXII is great game... the 13th FF is just great graphics and high expectation disapointment, there's nothing new... Still it's quite good game though... But 12th is great, great music, great everything... 12th is more next-gen than 13th (by my opinion)... ;-)
@Zentai88 Hey don't take this the wrong way but every FF is the same thing no matter how you look at it. There's practically nothing new but the story and FAIL attempts at improving a battle system that can be easily fixed just like that. However, I'd admit the games can be fun but they get really really really REALLY repetitive just trying to level up. Overall, not a horrible game, but just over-rated

Still, I like FF (but I'm not fanatic about it), maybe becouse there's no other such RPG with same level of quality... I really like FF12, becouse it was something new (in FF universe)... @Zentai88 Yea at first I despised FF cause I knew so little so I played it and well even though I still don't like the battle system (except for Dirge of Cerberus), the story is very very good. However you usually have to play about 10-15 before the story gets somewhat interesting but when it does you're hooked. However overall, gameplay+Story, I prefer Kingdom Hearts, just more fun and REAL TIME but FF is still hot

@Zentai88 To me, Kingdom Hearts was more fun to play but KH1 had a more compelling story. Whereas with FFXII, it started off boring so I took it out when I realized I had to get a license for each weapon, and switched over to FFVII Dirge Of Cerberus. I'm not saying FFXII is crap, cause FFX started off boring too, but just saying it didn't catch my interest fast enough. Maybe in time I might stick it back in and play it but for now I'd focus on other games like GOD OF WAR 3 or something
@djbluetoothremixes I've played the KH1 a bit but the music in the Alice of Wonerland location was so annoying that I've stoped playing it... God of War 3 is one big epic game, but unfortunatelly more interactive movie than a game... Maybe the Final Fantasy versus XIII will be better for you, it seems to be more action... ;-)
@Zentai88 Hmm it's always good to play a game during its time. like right now, I won't play MGS2 cause that's too dated but during its time it was a really good game. But as for Versus XIII, I just might give it a shot but I could never complete a Final Fantasy game, too long. after 20 hours I just take it and toss it and watch the ending on youtube, but thats only cause Leveling up is WAY BORING..but you want the perfect game...GTA, MGS...theres your perfect game.
@djbluetoothremixes There's nothing like perfect game... For me 20 hours is too short... Like the last I've played, Enslaved, I'm allways pissed of when I buy game and I finish it the same day I get it... Prince of Persia the forgotten sands are the same... But I see their point, they need to broad their audience to make more money, so today games are short and easy to beat + stuning GFXs... Maybe RPGs are not a genre for you then...
@Zentai88 Honestly it's not the genre, it's the actual game. I had no issue with KH1 & 2 and those games were pretty long. I don't have a problem with long games, Resident Evil 4 was really long but it was fun. Leveling up on FF...not fun, hence why I threw it out. If the game was less repetitive, it would be more fun, that's my main issue, you're doing the same thing OVER and OVER and OVER again for 12-24+ Hours Straight just to reach 99. Make it fun, like RE, KH & Dirge of Cerberus
@MegaCoolguy52 that it's not romantic actually added points in my mind, just because too many games put too much weight on getting characters together rather than strengthening their character individually. It was nice not to be paranoid on which character was going to be smashed up with another >^<
FFX and FFXII storyline cannot be compared, in my opinion. FFX was more of a romantic adventure? while FFXII is an epic quest to restore a broken empire's honor and the redemption of a disgraced knight. The only one weakness of FFXII is the inclusion of Vaan as the main character.. Poor choice, should have been Basch.
By the way, FFXII voice-actors and script/dialogue is one of the best I've encountered.
hmm, I have to disagree with you to a point. While there was some good voice acting in this game(balther as case in point) there were some that were just awful. I noticed a lot of them rushed their lines greatly and had unnecessary upper inflections in their voices. Vossler was pretty bad. Seriously, I thought he was about to say THIS IS THE FINAL BATTEL like goldman from the house of the dead 2 when he was about to turn on the party. Very hit and miss the voice acting.
Yeah but which video game has perfect voice acting? For me, though, FFXII is full of win in the voice acting department because of the English and Irish accents which I think is very appropriate for the game's context. Moreover, the scripts and dialogues were written beautifully. Such consummate mastery of the English language only adds to the maturity of the FFXII's story.

@GarlandFraser The breathing was heard because of the "muffleness" (if that's a word, which I doubt!) of the voice acting...that was either a PS2 limitation or they were running out of space on the disc (because the game is packed with stuff) and they had to lower the bitrate of the voices and the sound in general of the cutscenes...
Yeah, Letting Vaan be the main character was a pretty dumb choice, at least to us in the west. But you know, the story in(Japanese) role playing games is actually ment for young teenagers. Basch was supposed to be the main character first, but as many gamers in Japan disliked an "unsexy" character, Square changed into a young boy/man that was ment to be hot... It sounds stupid, but the truth can´t always make sense. Myself I´d loved seing how the story would have turned out without Vaan.
I actually thought it was interesting how the main character in the game wasn't the main character in the plot. You're watching a story unfold through a companion's eyes, and I found that to be pretty cool and innovative for video game storytelling.
Up until the last little bit of FFX, aren't you technically playing as a character supporting the main character? Just a thought. And if you haven't played FFX, shame on you! The best one in the series.
The fayth had their eye on Tidus and took him to Spira, from there he has to return to Zanarkand because he think he'll find some answers and perhaps a way home, not for the sake of defeating Sin. He is the cause of the change of plot, had he not been there it would've been another pointless ritual where the summoner sacrifices their life for nothing. He changed the story for the better. And his relationship with his father (imo) is that gane's true love story not Tidus and Yuna. Main character!
I think you're right :) I think it would actually be fun to be tagging along, and to be useful (so they wouldn't ditch you somewhere!), but not the main dude. I think supporting the main person would be neat because they need lots of support.
I personally liked X-2. Granted, it will never be good as X, but I thought it was still pretty underappreciated. This game, however, I didn't really care for.
FFX-2 has to be compared to FFX which is no way in comparison. The story, the bad guys, the love story, crap pop singing, paine, and the bad ending if u dont do right perfect makes it a bad FF not worthy to share the same title as FFX.
FFX is so good that even FF X-2 cant waste it...i just pretend it never happened :)
I'm debating whether or not to buy this game... it's only 12 bucks new, but it seems like game critics say it's awesome while the general public says it sucks. A lot of different opinions. Anyone wanna help me make a decision?

It's a very good game. I liked the gameplay... it was just a little too long... and when you compare it to other entries in the series it's not quite as good. But it's still a better game than most things on the market right now and I really enjoyed it. 12 bucks is a steal. I'd get it.
If you're a fan, then it depends how open you are to change. The public hates it because rabid fanboys are usually so stuck in the past that they can't see innovation. I would say buy it, being so cheap whether you like it or not.

I would buy it first and decide for yourself if you like it or not. It's different than most final fantasies, but it's still a gem in its own way. You'd be missing out on a lot if you didn't.
The graphics in the landscape and the areas were great. Sure, the graphics on the characters werent as amazing, but I don't mind. It's good enough that its playable. If you've ever played Shadow of the Colossus, you'll notice that the main character looks so much like a polygon guy. Still, the game is awesome and so is Final Fantasy XII. I can't wait for Final Fantasy XIII to come out.

Even though the storyline was weak, the graphics were better than any game ever on 6th gen consoles or older. It's better than some PS3 games too. Can't wait to play XIII.

I agree. I read somewhere that they traded out better graphics with the characters for better graphics with the landscape, or something like that. I just notice how much worse the characters look in this than in FFX.
The voice acting in this game is mostly exquisite, even better than the story itself (which is kinda hollow) but whoever voiced Vaan in the non-japanese game does a horrible job, he's "supposed" to be the main character yet his voice doesn't sound very good at all, actually it's the performace that's bad not his voice that much...
I also still don't get why the voice acting in this FF is kinda...muffled....
Yes I know, they could've used dual layer but for some reason they didn't. By just using dual layer they wouldn't had to have the voice overs compressed...

I liked FF12 more than FF7... ok not acctually, but the battles and all the stuff is more fun, since you can add spells and stuff, and that reminds me of FF1... makes me happy

My favorite game of Final Fantasy to date, and I've played all of them except XI and the Crystal Chronicles. This just shows the potential the series have in the future; they already successfully ammended the battle system, made a nice transition of composers, and these in-game cutscenes are much more fluid. Can't wait for the next installment.

Hey, I'm just sending a shout out to all those who replied to the comment I left a few months ago about whether or not I should buy this game. Thanks to MusicBox, Alpha, Mishaxhi, Tenor, Sess, gb, smoos, and MrLove. I bought it because of all your positive feedback, and just beat it today. It was one of the best games I've ever played, and the best twelve bucks I've ever spent. I loved every aspect of it, from the story to the battle system to Balthier's pants. Especially Balthier's pants. =)

@MegaCoolguy52 -- It wasn't the lack of romance, it was the lack of heart in general. There was little to no relationship development (friendship or otherwise) between the characters, no building of a family. They were basically just avatars going from event to event, very little depth. Great political plot, no heart to drive it home.

But what´s missing is that the story isn´t..."deep" enough, there´s very little character development and the little there is isn´t well done, I got late in the game (first time I couldn´t bring myself to finishing a FF game) without even knowing any of the characters much, and if I stopped playing for like a day or so I already forgot most of the plot points and the reasons why I´m in the place I am at the moment...

@MegaCoolguy52 Yeah, the story is decent...it needed better development and the story doesn't have to be "romantic" to make it good...but better fleshed out and "deeper" I guess could be the right word...
The game though, the game is amazing...it has SOOO much stuff I'm still playing it after years...

@MegaCoolguy52 I totally agree with you... FFXII is great game... the 13th FF is just great graphics and high expectation disapointment, there's nothing new... Still it's quite good game though... But 12th is great, great music, great everything... 12th is more next-gen than 13th (by my opinion)... ;-)

@Zentai88 Hey don't take this the wrong way but every FF is the same thing no matter how you look at it. There's practically nothing new but the story and FAIL attempts at improving a battle system that can be easily fixed just like that. However, I'd admit the games can be fun but they get really really really REALLY repetitive just trying to level up. Overall, not a horrible game, but just over-rated

Still, I like FF (but I'm not fanatic about it), maybe becouse there's no other such RPG with same level of quality... I really like FF12, becouse it was something new (in FF universe)... FF XIII for me is FFX-3...

@Zentai88 Yea at first I despised FF cause I knew so little so I played it and well even though I still don't like the battle system (except for Dirge of Cerberus), the story is very very good. However you usually have to play about 10-15 before the story gets somewhat interesting but when it does you're hooked. However overall, gameplay+Story, I prefer Kingdom Hearts, just more fun and REAL TIME but FF is still hot

@Zentai88 To me, Kingdom Hearts was more fun to play but KH1 had a more compelling story. Whereas with FFXII, it started off boring so I took it out when I realized I had to get a license for each weapon, and switched over to FFVII Dirge Of Cerberus. I'm not saying FFXII is crap, cause FFX started off boring too, but just saying it didn't catch my interest fast enough. Maybe in time I might stick it back in and play it but for now I'd focus on other games like GOD OF WAR 3 or something

@djbluetoothremixes I've played the KH1 a bit but the music in the Alice of Wonerland location was so annoying that I've stoped playing it... God of War 3 is one big epic game, but unfortunatelly more interactive movie than a game... Maybe the Final Fantasy versus XIII will be better for you, it seems to be more action... ;-)

@Zentai88 Hmm it's always good to play a game during its time. like right now, I won't play MGS2 cause that's too dated but during its time it was a really good game. But as for Versus XIII, I just might give it a shot but I could never complete a Final Fantasy game, too long. after 20 hours I just take it and toss it and watch the ending on youtube, but thats only cause Leveling up is WAY BORING..but you want the perfect game...GTA, MGS...theres your perfect game.

Like the last I've played, Enslaved, I'm allways pissed of when I buy game and I finish it the same day I get it... Prince of Persia the forgotten sands are the same... But I see their point, they need to broad their audience to make more money, so today games are short and easy to beat + stuning GFXs... Maybe RPGs are not a genre for you then...

@Zentai88 Honestly it's not the genre, it's the actual game. I had no issue with KH1 & 2 and those games were pretty long. I don't have a problem with long games, Resident Evil 4 was really long but it was fun. Leveling up on FF...not fun, hence why I threw it out. If the game was less repetitive, it would be more fun, that's my main issue, you're doing the same thing OVER and OVER and OVER again for 12-24+ Hours Straight just to reach 99. Make it fun, like RE, KH & Dirge of Cerberus

FFX and FFXII storyline cannot be compared, in my opinion. FFX was more of a romantic adventure? while FFXII is an epic quest to restore a broken empire's honor and the redemption of a disgraced knight. The only one weakness of FFXII is the inclusion of Vaan as the main character.. Poor choice, should have been Basch.
By the way, FFXII voice-actors and script/dialogue is one of the best I've encountered.

hmm, I have to disagree with you to a point. While there was some good voice acting in this game(balther as case in point) there were some that were just awful. I noticed a lot of them rushed their lines greatly and had unnecessary upper inflections in their voices. Vossler was pretty bad. Seriously, I thought he was about to say THIS IS THE FINAL BATTEL like goldman from the house of the dead 2 when he was about to turn on the party. Very hit and miss the voice acting.

Yeah but which video game has perfect voice acting? For me, though, FFXII is full of win in the voice acting department because of the English and Irish accents which I think is very appropriate for the game's context. Moreover, the scripts and dialogues were written beautifully. Such consummate mastery of the English language only adds to the maturity of the FFXII's story.

Sure there was alot of heavy breathing and "Haaaaaaahhh's" but you could tell the voice actors gave it there all. They'ed even improvise their own lines despite what the subtitles would say.

@GarlandFraser The breathing was heard because of the "muffleness" (if that's a word, which I doubt!) of the voice acting...that was either a PS2 limitation or they were running out of space on the disc (because the game is packed with stuff) and they had to lower the bitrate of the voices and the sound in general of the cutscenes...

Yeah, Letting Vaan be the main character was a pretty dumb choice, at least to us in the west. But you know, the story in(Japanese) role playing games is actually ment for young teenagers. Basch was supposed to be the main character first, but as many gamers in Japan disliked an "unsexy" character, Square changed into a young boy/man that was ment to be hot... It sounds stupid, but the truth can´t always make sense. Myself I´d loved seing how the story would have turned out without Vaan.

I actually thought it was interesting how the main character in the game wasn't the main character in the plot. You're watching a story unfold through a companion's eyes, and I found that to be pretty cool and innovative for video game storytelling.

The fayth had their eye on Tidus and took him to Spira, from there he has to return to Zanarkand because he think he'll find some answers and perhaps a way home, not for the sake of defeating Sin. He is the cause of the change of plot, had he not been there it would've been another pointless ritual where the summoner sacrifices their life for nothing. He changed the story for the better. And his relationship with his father (imo) is that gane's true love story not Tidus and Yuna. Main character!

I think you're right :) I think it would actually be fun to be tagging along, and to be useful (so they wouldn't ditch you somewhere!), but not the main dude. I think supporting the main person would be neat because they need lots of support.

FFX-2 has to be compared to FFX which is no way in comparison. The story, the bad guys, the love story, crap pop singing, paine, and the bad ending if u dont do right perfect makes it a bad FF not worthy to share the same title as FFX.
FFX is so good that even FF X-2 cant waste it...i just pretend it never happened :)

It's a very good game. I liked the gameplay... it was just a little too long... and when you compare it to other entries in the series it's not quite as good. But it's still a better game than most things on the market right now and I really enjoyed it. 12 bucks is a steal. I'd get it.

If you're a fan, then it depends how open you are to change. The public hates it because rabid fanboys are usually so stuck in the past that they can't see innovation. I would say buy it, being so cheap whether you like it or not.

I would buy it first and decide for yourself if you like it or not. It's different than most final fantasies, but it's still a gem in its own way. You'd be missing out on a lot if you didn't.

The graphics in the landscape and the areas were great. Sure, the graphics on the characters werent as amazing, but I don't mind. It's good enough that its playable. If you've ever played Shadow of the Colossus, you'll notice that the main character looks so much like a polygon guy. Still, the game is awesome and so is Final Fantasy XII. I can't wait for Final Fantasy XIII to come out.

Even though the storyline was weak, the graphics were better than any game ever on 6th gen consoles or older. It's better than some PS3 games too. Can't wait to play XIII.

I agree. I read somewhere that they traded out better graphics with the characters for better graphics with the landscape, or something like that. I just notice how much worse the characters look in this than in FFX.

The voice acting in this game is mostly exquisite, even better than the story itself (which is kinda hollow) but whoever voiced Vaan in the non-japanese game does a horrible job, he's "supposed" to be the main character yet his voice doesn't sound very good at all, actually it's the performace that's bad not his voice that much...
I also still don't get why the voice acting in this FF is kinda...muffled....

It's not the game itself; it's this particular recording of it. Compression was used to contain file size, if I'm not mistaken.
