To everyone thinking that every text, poem or lyrics can only be understood the way the writer was thinking. That's being a squarehead. Everything must be put in a box with only one label. Life does not work like that. And by the way, at least two of the members from Dr Hook do actually like what I've done...
Well the poster has definetly missed the boat interpeting the meaning of the song . Song is about lovers who are a few years apart cased closed...I said Good Day
I'd never heard this song before even though my dad was a Dr Hook fan and we always played a greatest hits tape on our travels as a family. He passed away a few months ago and when I looked up some Hook for songs that might remind me of car journeys with him, this one popped up. thanks so much for posting it.

My opinion, Dennis Locorrrier's unique voice and talent is second to none, and that includes Elvis and Sinatra. Please spend some time listening to him on YouTube, and you will see what I am saying. I'm not talking about charisma or his stage presence or name recognition. But his beautiful voice and delivery. Dennis never misses a word or a note. Perfection.
dr hook is the best i seen dem live several times i lissen 2 der muzik all my life i love dis song to me its a song about xperience in life an love ups an downs an ins an outs of relationships
@jthor615 thats exactly where its at freind not braggin but my best freind who just died of cancer and me did some bodyguard work for dr. hook, got to knoe them pretty well ,man can they party lol
@y00sta lol my granny was a dr hook groupie she went all over u.s with them when she past away she had dr hook playd all our family gatherings lissen 2 their albums my whole family love dr hook sorry to hear bot your frend i bet it was amazing time being a body guard for them
Thanks for posting this song.I am not surprised that many other artists have done this song (willie has a good version) and many other songs of Dr. Hook's music.
Some very good writing and musicians in this band.
As to this song, is it not about maturity and not so much age? The man just got back from Nam and had to grow up quick. Now he has plans for his life and to settle down (with her) and she still wants to do the single scene.
written about lovers or not... i love it and completely relate. i was seeing the most wonderful man a few years older than myself. before he moved away, he sang me this song. it will always bring a smile to my face
If its absolutely not about lovers of different age, then how do you explain "And i´m tired of running when your only learning to crawl", does that mean that the little sweetheart is slow in the head, or that he wants her to grow up ´n get out.
I think you can relate to music in any way that fits you. Anyhow, I dare to doubt the song was written for your soul pupose.
Is your comment directed to me? In that case I can tell that my husband is two years older than me - the others in the pictures are our children. And a tip: enjoy the harmony in what you see and hear instead of analize it! Music and pictures are like flowers; take care of the moment you can see and smell them - don´t carve in them to see what´s inside. That, my friend is the difference between culture and barbary.
To me it means that when you have some children you sometimes get really tierd that they have to re-do your or their brothers or sisters mistakes. And you want them to grow up in this very moment...Then they go to bed, and you watch them sleep like babies, and you just love that they are still your small children.
@nielsmsson "And i´m tired of running when your only learning to crawl"references that the man (older) has more had more romantic experience than the younger immature girl.
Next line "And you're heading somewhere, but I've been to somewhere and found it was nowhere at all this" shows hes had life experiences (chased his dreams) while she(younger not) has not
Listen to the song again. You are free to interpet it the way you like, and I will defend with my life your right to be wrong
Loved the photo montage. Beautiful family you have there. Did the other commenters really listen to the lyrics and know it has nothing at all to do with age?
Shel Silverstein & Dennis Locorriere wrote this about a soldier returning from Viet Nam and not able to pick up where he left off with his small town high school sweetheart/wife. That happened so much with the shell shocked vets who were not able to reaclimate to life back here in "The World".
Thanks for telling! But on the other hand, songs as well as poems connect to every persons life the way it fits - on persons, places, politics whatever. Like beauty is in the viewer´s eyes, lyrics can be in the reader´s or listener´s ears or minds. (But it´s always good to know the writer´s true story!)
i love this song but i wish there was an explanation to the pictures....says she who is 19 years older than her husband.sorry if i'm being thick here, its not intentional
I thought that it was quite obvious that it´s me (and my husband on two photos) and all but one of our children in different ages. Besides, it destroy´s both music and pictures to add text to every picture. This is just for fun and not supposed to be a serious lesson in something. Enjoy life before it´s too late!!!
great upload. love the video.

When my daughter got married she asked me to pick out a song for the father/bride dance. This is what we used.
