I like Maher's words about American presence in the Islamic world. Republicans (excluding say, Ron Paul) always try to spin the criticism that America is causing Islamic extremism as sympathising with the terrorists.

No. There's a difference between an apologist, or extremist sympathiser, and someone with a brain who completely gets that ultimate responsibility lies with the faith-driven terrorist BUT who understands the political context of terrible foreign policy serving as their catalyst.
