@misterdirtyknees - terrific post! I well remember those trackless trolleys that we had in Brooklyn bad in the day. It was always fun to see kids doing that as I was too much of a scaredy cat to do it myself!
Don't get fooled by these "Los Angeles" Imposters who called themselves "The Dodgers". Remember this, "The Dodgers" are all about "big business" and money. The Franchise left "Brooklyn". "The Dodgers" cared less about History and Tradition. If that is really the case, "The Organization' should of stayed in Brooklyn.
The team playing at "Chaves Ravine" in Los Angeles is nothing like the "Original Dodgers" of Brooklyn. Tommy Lasorda should know better. Los Angeles stole "The Dodgers". Los Angeles true baseball team is "The Angels".
Robert Moses blocked it--that scum bag!! But O'Malley is no saint--you know the joke--if you had Hitler Mussolini and Moses in the same room and had a gun with two bullets what would you do
la dodgers are the fake dodgers la is not a real baseball town and california is not a baseball state. your state baseball programs suck and your state little leagues only allow people under 14 to play so if you play high school in la and want to play baseball in the summer or fall you cant and it is even worse for someone who cant play high school you cant play little league either. there are more football and hockey leagues than baseball leagues in la.
If the Dodgers could've got the land around the Atlantic Ave. LIRR station, which was available, they would've stayed and built on it. Robert Moses sandbagged O'Malley completely. The Dodgers could come back, but play where? Coney Island? (They were offered that area back in the mid-50's, so why would they play there now?) Times change, people move on. Those that posted that Brooklyn isn't the same people are right. Those fans are long gone to the suburbs or farther.
times do change and the amusement park, at coney is facing dire consequences.....the dodgers also played in NJ....it hasn't hurt the giants and Jets who still call themselves the "New York" excetras....even horace stonham thought of moving the giants back in the 70's.....his Ideal location was where the meadow lands now stand.....baseball is hurting....football has taken it's spot.......only a radical move will infuse baseball with what it needs.....enough money and anything can happen..
nice to see someone else who sees that mlb would be better off with the dodgers back in brooklyn i have lived in la and their fans suck i was sick of people saying that the la dodgers were like the brooklyn dodgers and their have more lacroose leagues than baseball league and their high school teams are horrible compared to ones in the south and other places. so if you cant play high scool or not you cant play fall ball or winter ball.
@drakghoulie They can never return...The New York Mets and The New York Yankees hold territorial rights over the area...and there is NO WAY either team would OK a 3rd Major League team in the area..Least of all, the Dodgers.
@drakghoulie Not for nothing, but do you really think that three generations of baseball fans born and raised on the New York Mets are going to drop the team because the Dodgers come back to Brooklyn? I'm a 40-year-old lifelong NY NL fan, and despite the fact that the grandfather who introduced me to the Amazin's was a Dodger fan first, if asked to make a choice, well, it's Mets for me.
Screw Walter O'Malley, Tommy Lasorda AND Kirk Gibson!
i have read where robert moses BLOCKED many of walter o'malleys proposals for a new stadium.Moses was a piece if shit ! it was he who FUCKED THE FANS OF BROOKLYN. I would like to see a MLB team move to Brooklyn. How about the TB RAYS THEY DON'T DRAW SHIT AND THEY WON THE PENNANT LAST YR! That team would pack the house in brooklyn. there would be a waiting list for season tickets.
well, when it comes to baseball, or most sports for that matter, i am totally clueless. but i thought the pics were great. one important thing about baseball is hotdogs. i have been to phillies and cincinatti reds and bluerocks games and the hotdogs suck. america should be embarrased that bluejays fans get a better hotdog for less money. hotdogs are american. we should serve the best.
you've been reading revisionist history, Moses "was" a terrible person granted, but basically though the team was sold to the highest bidder. The culprits were not one or the other but all parties, NY, La, Moses and the big O. lets not forget frick and Giles. In the end O'malley pulled the trigger. he could have stayed and moved to queens, hasn't hurt the Mets. Atlantic and flatbush was never a viable option, only the train could really acess the area, not many cars could be accomodated
For anyone interested in the "real" story, read Robert Murphy's new Book "After many a summer" it's meticulously, well researched and considering Robert Moses has no Pr Department working on his Image, I believe these are the "real facts" Blame is shared by many.
Robert Moses & Former Mayor Robert Wagner were the real Goats to allow "The Dodgers" to leave Brooklyn. New York Politicians loved "The Yankees". The New York Politicians hardly pay any attention to the Baseball New York Giants. The City & State Of New York will forever be known as the "Butterbrained " City & State who allowed "The Dodgers" to leave Brooklyn. Brooklyn is the real big looser because its in New York City. Sorry Brooklyn, No more Dodgers. The City Of New York did you in.
I love it!!! Im from LA but I respect the fact that they came from Brooklyn I even whent to where Ebbets Field once was, and whent to Vero Beach the original stomping grounds of The Dodgers
I'm glad you like it, I think the dodgers though they won more on the opposite coast they lost out in a big way. Now Only the Brooklyn Dodgers can save base ball!
Oh yeah just to let you all know I go to Dodger games very often and alot of people wear the Brooklyn Dodgers hats, shirts, jackets, etc. Overall they are better of in Los Angeles, GO BUMS!!!!!!
I understand how you feel believe me, but for the fans in La of course it's better for them and not necessarilly the dodgers or mlb to be in La. The Dodgers would be better off in Brooklyn, because the Mets, despite their history as a franchise is worth more today and the dodgers have recently taken a 250 million dollar collateral loan on dodger satadium and the ground it sits on. Foot ball is now sadly the number one sport. Moving the Dogers back would help change.
I thought the same thing that if the Dodgers and Giants moved back MLB would be the #1 sport in America. The Brooklyn Dodgers would be better supported than the LA Dodgers and would sell out every game unlike in LA where they never sell out even with Manny Remirez. If the Giants left San Francisco and moved back to New York they would also get supported better than in San Francisco and the New York Giants would sell out every game just like the Dodgers would.
New York's moved on, dude. It's a Mets-Yankees town now. The Dodgers would have a hard time finding fans under the age of 50 if they moved back today and as for leaving Los Angeles after 51 years, well, since when do two wrongs make a right? And I say this as the grandson and great grandson of Brooklyn Dodger fans.
I've got to seriously disagree with this. Dodgers would find plenty of fans. Where do Brooklyn high school kids see baseball games? Subway thru Manhattan to Queens or S Bx. Brooklyn is still a storied borough. When I travel the country, I see more Brooklyn Dodger hats than Mets hats!
@nightskytube Yes, they do take the subway to Queens or the South Bronx. Some of them even drive. And what happens in the rest of the country is irrelevant. New Yorkers are not going to come flocking back to the Dodgers just because they come back, no matter how many midwesterners might wear Brooklyn Dodgers hats as fashion statements. Kids in England wear Yankees hats as fashion statements too. That doesn't mean they know who Alfredo Aceves -- or even Joe Girardi -- is.
The Dodgers make plenty of money. McCourt bought the franchise on leverage because News Corp. wanted to sell. Peter O'Malley is a rich man.
And the Dodgers would not do better moving back to New York. The city's moved on, Mets fans who were born after 1962 aren't going to become Dodgers fans because their grandfathers were and the Dodgers would be the third team in a three-team town.
The misconception is that Brooklyn is the same town, Brooklyn is not the same town. Also Base ball itself would "do better" with the dodgers in brooklyn. After the image disasters and beatings the sport has taken over the last several years only something like this would put baseball back on the front burner. Recently Mccourt took a colatteral loan against the part for renovations to the tune of 250 million. before the bottom fell out of the market.
@drakghoulie That's why all the Mets fans were complaining that there were too many Dodgers photos, and not enough historical photos of the Mets, at Citi Field last year. Because clearly we haven't moved on...
Where are you from? I've lived in the New York area my whole life and Brooklyn is not what it was when the Dodgers are there. It's fallen and risen again, reinventing itself as something completely different than it was in the '50s -- it's a great place to live, but it's a bedroom community for hipsters and yuppies who work (and often play) in Manhattan, not a world of its own. The sense of separateness between Brooklyn and Manhattan has eroded a great deal since then.
have you seen the encroachment of new housing in Brooklyn?? the property value is improving, people who work in "the city " are moving back. over the last ten years mny areas are slowly being rennovated and reclaimed...who knows what the future holds?? in 57 we said never no way, you just never know
check out baseball fever and the brooklyn dodger section the most active section next to the yanks and red sox........compare the activity to the La section
Someone should moved the Dodgers back to Brooklyn and the Giants back to New York. They fans in San Francisco and LA are horrible compared to the fans in Brooklyn and New York. Until some rich person moves the Giants and Dodgers back New York will have to put up with the Mets. When the Dodgers moved back to Brooklyn and the Giants move back to New York New York will be in a new golden age of baseball and baseball in the U.S.A very popular and the NFL will be a shadow of itself
No seattle should get an axpansion team Seattle Sonics Fans are good but if the Thunder leave OKC to go back to Seattle than OKC should get an expansoin team so that OKC can have NBA.
That does sound nice. The Dodgers were profitable in Brooklyn but the Giants owner was thinking of moving the team to I think Minnesota because in the mid fifties there were probably more people on the field than there were spectators in the old Polo Grounds.
Many places to build, he could have done the right thing, but nobody was giving him the fortune La was so he bolted for the coast. threw duke and gil in a sack, sling it over his shoulder and took off. Did you know he gave the mayor of la the home plate from ebbets field signed by the dodgers players, now that's gall.
Years Later after The Dodgers left Brooklyn, The Mets didn't have much of a chance to win "the 2007 & 2008 National League East" as John McCain & Sarah Palin didn't win the 2008 U.S. Presidency. The "Phillies" continue to show mockery over the "New York Mets"
I understood that there was available land in the Greenpoint / Williamsburg Area Of Brooklyn across the street near "The Old Greenpoint Hospital" back in the 1940's & early 1950's. Today, the land was developed for a "Public Housing Project" which exist today. The land was available near the City owned park, "Cooper Park". The New Baseball Stadium could of been constructed there instead of Los Angeles..
Let's not leave out La official's who were more than eager and willing to give O'malley a kingly ransom. Their all to blame. These people are dead, but the team who for so long all but denied it's Brooklyn roots
seems to call upon it whenever it's to their benefit. That really bothers me. The dodgers are Brooklyn and Brooklyn is the dodgers, In La their just a team. It would be a big boost for baseball after recent scandal's to return the dodgers to Brooklyn. The Met's/dogers rivalry, WOW!

Unlike La where they kicked people off the land after telling them a housing development was going up and they'd have first crack at the new homes. Plenty of blame to go around. Except that the Brooklyn fans despite stories to the contrary did support the team.
Mr. Robert Moses, New York City Developer, made it very real that "The Dodgers" were no longer at home in Brooklyn. Moses refused to give Dodger President & Owner, Walter O'Malley, the land on Flatbush Ave & Atlantic Avenue after the 1957 Baseball season. The Dodgers moved to Los Angeles for the start of the 1958 seadon to this present day. "Too Bad Brooklyn".
