You never hold it by the magazzine as it causes it to jam as the mag spring is so powerful moving the mag eg. by holding causes the round to enter the breech and since the thing draws the round out when the bolt moves forward it trys to fire 2 round at once-hold it by the wrist guard

You're right. The magazine feed lips were easy to bend just a bit out of shape, then you would get feeding problems. Not good when you need it to shoot, Same with the German MP38/40 which used the same magazine basically. You're supposed to hold the Sten by the barrel shroud, sort of like a rifle, The Germans were taught to hold the MP/40, not by the magazine, but a bit higher, on the magazine well, the part the magazine sticks into. Only those who don't know any better hold the magazine.

@Redhammer, I forgot to say. Hold the rifle by the magazine well by all means, not the mag itself though. And @counternub, youre not supposed to hold any smg by the maggazine, I´ve yet to see the training manual that recommenda this. If you chaps want to keep relying on your weapons (and their mags), respect those magazines and care for them.

On a sten that would be reasonable, as much of the weight of the gun will have the upper side of the magwell nagging on the mag catch and the bottom mag lips (Right mag lips.) would be squeezed in by the bottom of the magwell.

But on a G3: If you use the mag as a horizontal grip. Most of the weight of the gun is resting on the mag nubs. I`ve fired countless .308 rounds as well as countless blanks this way and I never had feeding trouble with any of my mags (Which btw i never traded in till the day i left.)co`s even recommended that technique for short handed people, that said, I wouldnt recommend that technique for other weapons unless given green light. So Noddycars is in general perfectly correct on all points.

I think you have to hold it by the mag, it's got a grip over entry for mag and aparently the baral becomes burning hot from 1 mag ? go to USA and play fire one :-)

Nope... they discovered that holding it by the mag could with a bit of time result in bent feed lips which would result in feeding problems. Feed lips had to be within certain tolerance to feed properly. See the barrel shroud with the holes in it? That is where you should hold it., from underneath. Sort of like a rifle. The barrel shroud protected your hand from the hot barrel. Everyone thinks your supposed to hold it by the mag because of Hollywood, and other people who don't know better.

Who said holding the mag was dangerous? The G3 was too long for me to hold the foregrip, so I held the mag or magwell during any kind of practice shooting with it and got perfectly good results... ffs... :P

Contrary to popular belief you DONT hold onto a magazine. The weakest part of any weapon is its means of feeding ammo. Hold the mag and through the vibration of firing, the magizine lips will become bent or distorted. "yeah but the steel is springsteel" and "hardened" - dont believe it.

those mag lips will go sooner or later, and Murphy will make it happen in afirefight.

That kid had the wrong stance when firing the sten. your suppose to lean forward when firing. I did the same thing though when I shot my first gun (a double barrel 12 bore) when I was 12. The recoil dam near knocked my ear protectors off. Still I live in Britian so I can only shoot conventional rifles and shotguns here so I'll say thats one lucky kid.

It`s a shame though that not most european civilians can own a sten which btw so happens to be the very symbol of british infantry modernization during ww2.. Not to mention it`s a pretty big symbol for resistance fighters throughout entire europe during ww2.. Americans can have all theese relic guns, we europeans on the other hand gets our asses anal probed and jailed before we can even explain the cops that the sten they found in our car was a non-firing replica.. those bastards.. hehe :P

That kid shouldn't hold the Sten when firing by the magazine, it stresses out the mag well and the magazine as well. I know, I own a MkII myself.
