@tccdo His solo stuff is awesome and his showmanship with Genesis was great, but to me it is Phil's band. Phil's vocals sound better on ALL their songs, even the Gabriel era ones. He just meshes better musically with the whole band. Gabriel felt like the odd man out.
@1776Matthew Gabriel has a greater artistic vision, as front man he allowed for Hackett and Banks to really shine... then Genesis became a pop band with simpler songs thereby masking the true talent of everyone in the band. If someone was the "odd-man out" it sure wasn't Gabriel.
@professorfoxtrot You Gabriel freaks are just COMPLETELY wrong. I love Gabriel's solo work, but don't tell me it is all Phil's fault that the band went pop. GABRIEL'S SOLO WORK IS ALL POP!! As a matter of fact, I think he went pop while Phil was still creating a couple more excellent prog albums with Genesis. And Gabriel didn't really find his voice until he went solo. The Genesis material almost sounds like it is out of his range.
He was entertaining and "shocking" on stage, that's all.
@1776Matthew On the subject of vocals, It's a matter of subjectivity. Collins vocals are smoother softer and technically more accurate but Gabriel's were more abbrassive, ballsy and passionate. I agree that they released a few great prog albums with Philly C, but that was before he had established himself as the frontman. In the meantime the other musicians in the band (e.g. tony banks, rutherford and hackett) could share the spotlight and shine- and shine they did, until Collins took over.
As for Gabriel's solo work being pop- that's an understatement. Gabriel remained progressive throughout his entire solo career and didn't shy away from what people would consider to be unusual or strange. Songs like Signal to noise and rhythm of the head are perfect examples of this. Gabriel made progressive songs that overlapped with popular interest much in the same vein as Radiohead or Talking Heads.
@professorfoxtrot "Gabriel made progressive songs that overlapped with popular interest much in the same vein as Radiohead or Talking Heads."
I don't deny that Gabriel's pop tunes were infused with elements of prog, thereby making them more interesting, but so were later Genesis tunes.
Honestly, I really shouldn't speak too much on Gabriel's solo career. I know the album "So" inside and out, but that is really it outside of a few other tunes like "Solsbury Hill" and "Steam". Mea culpa.
Creeping up the blind side, shinning up the wall stealing thru the dark of night Climbing thru a window, stepping to the floor checking to the left and the right Picking up the pieces, putting them away something doesn't feel quite right Help me someone, let me out of here then out of the dark was suddenly heard welcome to the Home by the Sea Coming out the woodwork, thru the open door pushing from above and below
Why do I have to be 17 and grow up with today's "music"? Will todays music be listened to 30 years from now like Genesis? Doubt it, no one will want to hear it.
@IndianPrince3999 Yes... I'm 17 and sometimes I wonder why all these Lady Gaga, Bieber, Cyrus and another sh*t can't be replaced by Phil Collins, Genesis, Michael Jackson and stuff like that :)
@IndianPrince3999 Because of technology. It changed the way we listen to music. this song would never be played today. listening to whole albums rarely happens now. Lady Gaga, Bieber, Cyrus are all over polished hype. Record labels are too busy looking for the next one song hit for $1.29 on itunes. the good thing is all that "old"music is cheaper to purchase and available, best with full on head phones!! look up early stuff from Yes, Alan Parsons, radio head, and a little known band, U.K.
@IndianPrince3999 Music as no real age. Be thankful for all the generation, they all something great to share. Music is the heart of the soul and has no boundaries, no colour or race. So just enjoy and share. It was not put on this earth for controversy. Peace and love to you
Really? Then why didn't the Chinese invent prog-rock, with all its allusions to classical European music, English folk music, etc.? (...Genres which the Chinese, Indians, Africans also failed to invent.) Why didn't these fine Englishmen invent zither-guzheng music (/watch?v=X3Ukm37HbE0) before the Chinese could do it?
Why did neither the English nor the Chinese invent Samba?
Vibrations can reach any ear, but the ability to CREATE music is VERY racial.
@1776Matthew Google Yoko Kanno. She's one of the most famous Japanese songwriters (Though mostly known by anime fans). Some of her Cowboy Bebop songs are in English. Also, google Norio Ohga ( of Sony ). He was a Japanese opera singer and business man who championed the use of compact discs for music. Also, lately their have been some singers from the Philippines with really big voices (Arnel Pineda and Charice). As well as, others of Filipino descent (Bruno Mars, Cassie Steele, etc.).
@IndianPrince3999 i agree. i'm 16 and would rather listen to phil collins and genesis than justin bieber, chris brown, chris blue or wtf their names are.
@IndianPrince3999 Oh, they will hear it, but only few people to have a "laugh" about the cheesyness of most of the decade's music, I guess (it'll be the same point-of-view people nowadays have about scary 70ies - music like T.Rex, Boney M. and so on...).
@IndianPrince3999 Sure, lots of it will be. There's tonnes of amazing new music out there today. Most of it isn't on the radio, but Genesis were around for 15 years before they started to have radio hits. But go listen to M83, or Sufjan Stevens, or St. Vincent, or Sigur Ros/Jonsi, or tonnes of other great artists out there. There's more great music being made now than you'd ever have time to listen to.
@IndianPrince3999 there was always commercial crap- do you think in the 6's and 70's there wasn't capitalism? there always was and always will be music that is commercially driven, because the masses are a bunch of robots- the sooner you guys get this, the sooner you can stop complaining and find the good music- and by the way as a 53 year old classic rock fan,....there are good bands now.....you need to stop trying to find them on tv or commercial radio- it really is that simple-
this is music!! Love the comment about Justin Bieber...although maybe 10-15 percent of today's music is great..I am still waitiing for a 70s, 80s and early 90s renassaince,,,cuz Justin Bieber and lady gaga gotta go go...
This was the tour that I saw....I remember Mike and Daryl with their matching Steinberger guitars....Good show...Los Angeles Forum. I was in the sixth row. Awesome show.
I've heard that there's an oficial video for this song, but I can't find it anywhere on youtube. But still I enjoy this. Genesis were always great live.
this song ran on a closed system video of the ships historic missions onboard the USS IOWA in oct. 1988. got the vhs. when I can get it converted to dvd I'll post. Good Stuff. Really good stuff.
@fuelman524 Wow. I can guess how that song fit with you guys a lot. Wanting to get home 'get us out of here' and obviously 'home by the sea'. I've felt something like that in my day. Congradulations on serving on such a historic, beautiful and powerful warship. I'm jelous!!
Not sure whether a new album would be a contribution to their legacy. Simply because I am(!) sure they would do it only for their egos.
Seriously, there was no other reason than that for their last tour: They didn´t have an album to promote and when Collins left Genesis he claimed he didn´t like their songs an felt like an actor.
Then, suddenly he´s back(?). What has changed in the meantime?
They were a great band nonetheless. Maybe the greatest one of all times.
@antonbrd ,yup, phill sufered some sidefffects due an operation, can not feel his fingers, and that added to the hearing damaged he suffered, he announced he retires from genesis for good
can anyone find a video link with the music video of this song where it shows Phil Collins as a Samurai and being attacked by a ninja (it follows the lyrics of the song). i saw it when i was a teenager and have not been able to find it anywhere.
I saw the Mama tour in high school. One of the best ever. I thought I was too cool for Genesis, but I was an idiot. I love this, uh, Genesis, "Genesis" album!
Wembley 1987. What a great concert. Phil at his very best and Mike looks so cool. I was their and without doubt Genesis are a truly great band. The drumming with Chester and Phil is amazing.
People always bitch about which version of Genesis was better, the progressive 70's with Gabriel or the 80's more accessible Genesis with Phil... why can't we just love it all? This band rocks... period.
I agree. Peter was great and I love all the stuff they did together, but Phil brought something different to the band and their music was great as well. Never had the pleasure of seeing the band with Peter but saw them numerous times in the 80's and 90's. GREAT shows
I would say 1987 Invisible Touch tour. At the 1992 The Way We Walk Tour, they had huge video screens that showed the home by the sea and ghosts flying around it.
I really like phil collins...and genesis umm let us relive our lives in what we tell you means telling your kids ur pretty much unearthing all that happened in that era but i don't know nothin! (;

It's my favourite Genesis song, I think, but it's a difficult choice.

Not for me. This is hands down their best. (IMHO)

It's played too fast. Mike plays better the bass guitar... C--

Wembley 1987. What a great concert. Phil at his very best and Mike looks so cool. I was their and without doubt Genesis are a truly great band. The drumming with Chester and Phil is amazing.

una musica unica. oggi nessuno ha tanta qualità da riuscire a rimanere nella testa tanto tempo. Sempre attuali e grandi Genesis

I was almost killed the night I went to see Genesis in concert in Conneticut (sp?) but it was so worth it.
Phil Collins drummed like a mad man......awesome!!!!!!!!!!

People always bitch about which version of Genesis was better, the progressive 70's with Gabriel or the 80's more accessible Genesis with Phil... why can't we just love it all? This band rocks... period.

@mybadminton90 I completely agree with you... Genesis' legacy, be it with Peter Gabriel or with Phil Collins, will never die!

@mybadminton90 Because Peter was the locomotive of Genesis... with all respect to Phil but he is too much commercial

@mybadminton90
I agree. Peter was great and I love all the stuff they did together, but Phil brought something different to the band and their music was great as well. Never had the pleasure of seeing the band with Peter but saw them numerous times in the 80's and 90's. GREAT shows

Is this from the 1987 Invisible Touch tour or the 1992 Way We Walk tour?
SPeacock 3 years ago
I would say 1987 Invisible Touch tour. At the 1992 The Way We Walk Tour, they had huge video screens that showed the home by the sea and ghosts flying around it.
DCB316 3 years ago
I'd have loved to see that :)

I'd appreciate it if you didn't give me poor remarks for something as trivial as this - I was simply asking a question.

This was early in Genesis , I believe Peter Gabriel was either leaving at that time or shortly after.

Peter had been gone quite a while when this came out 6(?) studio albums previously
martinterri 3 years ago 2
yes 6 studio albums, came out in 1982 with the self titled album Genesis. Gabriel Left in 1975 after the Lamb Tour
