did you guys use signs to explain the actions of each scene before it happens? thanks for this, I'm writing a paper about this right now and this was a lot of help.
thats the whole point of brechtian theatre its not meant to be believable or remotely realistic in the acting sense. the audience aren't meant to feel emotion but to question the political and social context the actors are trying to convey. the singing isnt meant to be sensational and its meant to have an element of ridiculousness so we concentrate solely on the morals of the story.
the worst acting in the world... worst set in the world... worst acting in the world... theu would both be turning in their graves if they saw this.,....
The accents were all over the place but that's to be expected from inexperieced American actors. Though the overall production was heightened by excellent singing, strong music, and a solid lead performance by the actor playing Macheath. You must keep in mind that it's a student production. Therefore, the artist are still learning their craft. Overall I consider the production a success; Brecht is difficult to pull off even for seasoned professional actors.
Are they supposed to be speaking ENGLISH? I assume they are all American and it shows, perhaps they should concentrate on the acting and singing and forget about the English accents they fail dismally
(con) good actors, but incredibly uncreative. It was practically anti-Brechtian in presentation! not at all alienating, this one. Brecht's words etched onto an 'Oliver' stage...is this supposed to be anti-revolutionary theater?
this was all in all pretty bad. other than the fact that the whole thing was posted on youtube and gives vewiers a chance to hear Brecht and Weill's words and music...a few
This is the Blitzstein setting written for a production in New York in the middle 50's with Lenya as the Jenny the role she created in the original production.

Looks like someone tried to mesh Tim Burton with Bertolt Brecht and FAILED. MISERABLY.
The acting is horrible. Seems all they care about is singing pretty while looking like they're making a mockery of theatre.
Weill was known for not hiring pure singers. But it's college theatre, it has to sound good or else it just doesn't "work"

I just love the costumes.
Set design is pretty cool too.
Makeup is a little distracting at times.

So who starred in the NU production? I can't find it online anywhere.

This musical was sooooo boring!!!
I don't think it's meant to be this bad... Maybe just bad acting.
Either way I just couldn't watch anymore
