My high school book club was reading "Twilight" and we studied the history of Vampires as we read the book. Being a big history buff I told the club the story of Vlad Tepes and Elizabeth Bathory. They were amazed and shocked! I also found out Vlad's family fought against the Frankenstein family, who inspired the title of Mary Shelley's novel :D

The oral tradition's are greatly embellished so one has to wonder if tales like the 'lazy housewife' and 'the honest man' ever really took place. But as I go to a church with a bunch of Romanians directly from the old country who also watched it, it was tough seeing them cringe at every mention of Vlad in a cheesy way. I don't think he was ever a psychopath or criminal. He was simply doing what any royal would for his country and people, he was protecting them.

Its too bad all most people know about Vlad Dracula is the crap Stoker invented. Stoker got it wrong, the real blood drinker was a Hungarian woman named Countess Elizabeth Báthory.1560-1640 she had hundreds of young peasant women abducted and killed so she could drink and bathe in their blood in order to preserve her youth.
Vlad was a hard man but so were all the Romanian, Hungarian, Serbian and Moldavian warlords that had the balls to stand up to the Turks.

@1138thz That's not true here in the States anymore, considering how many books, documentaries and stories people have been exposed to. They get, generally, that he was more impressive as a real person than the story Stoker peddled.

I'm from California. I agree that individuals like yourself are exceptions. But how often have we seen films and stories where only German/Turkish tabloid version of his life are offered? The oral tradition's are greatly embellished so one has to wonder if tales like the 'lazy housewife' and 'the honest man' ever really took place. I have no doubt that the forest of the impaled is a true story but then again the Turks preferred decapitation and piles of heads to terrorize an enemy.

@1138thz Oh, we see plenty of garbage here, and a lot of traveler's tales came over from Saxons living in Siebenburgen spreading junk about Vlad, just as if you read Russian history, you would have thought that the Teutons ate children going by the stories. People all over the world, sadly, believe stories rather than doing their homework, and it will take generations, if ever, to rid ourselves of this problem. It's a drag, I must admit, to think about.

How do you feel about the film "Dark Prince: The True Story of Dracula" Historical inaccuracies abound but I can watch it.
Sadly, I have never watched the Romanian film 'Vlad Tepes (1979)'. although I have read some good reviews of it. I would like to get a copy with English subtitles...but so far no luck.

@1138thz "Dark Prince" was tolerable. But as I go to a church with a bunch of Romanians directly from the old country who also watched it, it was tough seeing them cringe at every mention of Vlad in a cheesy way. I've never seen Vlad Tepes, either, but I can ask one of my mates there to see if they can find a copy themselves.

@racarrera, the dutch have photos, copies, & pictures of Vlad Dracula's penis locked away hiding in their dutch museums somewhere. And, they even keep the real thing in a pickle jar sealed air tight with a lid to perserve it. The dutch ERECTED hand-made(!) statues of the romanian prince's penis in Amsterdam so everyone may cumm and worship !
The dutch followers even came up with a special new method of impaling which they use on each other. Using their male genitals as the wooden pole. LOL!
