Wonderful camera - I have had one for a few months now! I just wish Panasonic would have enabled Linear PCM audio recording, and possibly the DV mode.
To people thinking of buying this camcorder i thought it was a great one at first but. One problem is that the lens and 3mos chips are the same as in some of the consumers camcorder so basically they have put it in bigger case. And its alot more your better saving up for the AG-HMC150.
What really is disappointing is the new tm700 does 1080/60p. The tm700 replaces the tm300. The tm300 was basically the hmc40 on the inside. Better off buying the tm700 for half the price.
@rnickeymouse Your right but im going to save up for the Hmc150 because i need something more professional but if you dont have alot of money go for the tm700
Im going to college for video production i like this camera. Is this appropriate for a college student? i really like it. i have a macbook pro with final cut express. is is compatible? thnks
Is this compatible with the latest Macbook Pro and Imovie 09 software for image editing? Thanks, i really enjoyed the video, seems like a very good camera for the money. I would like to learn more about how good the still quality is on this. Any one have any comments?
Sorry for bothering again. But what would the upsites of this cam be, compared to my HDR-XR520. Because this camcorder i currently got has an amazing HDD on 240gb and it has awsome HD-quality on both daylighted images and very low lighted. It even has a TOYALLY darkness recordning mode.
What does make this camcorder better? I'm just doing as much research as i can :)
You do not need to use Panasonic SD cards for this camera. We'd like you to, but that's your choice. You can use other brands. Using a Class 10 card is the right way to go since it gives you a faster transfer speed for your footage.
I would check the web to learn more A-Data. Buying a Class 10 card is the right thing, because its made for high-res HD video. The 40 records at 4 quality levels. At the lowest level, you can record up to 6 hrs on a 16GB card, and at the highest level (22-25Mbps), you can record for 1-1/2 hrs. Theres many ways to transfer footage: directly from camera to computer, or by placing the SD card in computers SD slot, or by using an USB-to-SD adapter, which are inexpensive.

ok fine its cool but, like most film makers i need a MINI DV tape for my backup i realy dont want to go back and reshoot the dam scene agian plus the hard drive could crash and then i have no way to get it back even the PRO cameras have both MINI DV and SD card for that reason. so i give this camera a 6
I find MiniDV to be a highly unreliable backup source. I find that my tapes begin to degrade within a year and half giving me poor and sometimes unusable video content. I can understand your concerns for backup though. I think the best backup method is an external hard drive, and an off-site backup service like carbonite.
UPDATE: Okay, here's an update on my HMC40 that I sent in for service a week after purchase after it wouldn't turn back on. I ended up getting it back several days after I was originally told I would get it (got it today - Fri... was told I'd have it back by Mon). I was told some board in it has burned out for an unknown reason. After getting it back all seemed well and good until I realized I DIDN'T HAVE ANY AUDIO! Back to the shop it goes and I'm out $3K in work as a result. Not good.
UPDATE 2: While things haven't exactly been peachy with my camera, I will say that Panasonic's customer service is quick to respond to customer needs. Panasonic is overnighting a loaner camera to me so I won't be out any money while mine is back in for repair. They were extremely apologetic and are working to make things right. Two thumbs up!!!!
I just wanted to note that no one should take my troubles as indicative of this camera. Everyone else that I have seen online has had no problems, and I think I'm just one of those flukes that sometimes happens. The quality of the video and audio (with the external xlr mic) make this camera a rock solid investment for the price. You really can't go wrong getting it.
I got this camera last week. Video it takes is simply amazing and the audio is amazing to boot. One problem though... it died on me a week after getting it.
I was importing my first set of clips to Final Cut and everything was going smooth until the end. I got an error on the computer after the files were done and the camera shut itself off. It hasn't turned on since. I'm waiting for a call back from Panasonic on Monday.
Got a call back from Panasonic today. They are providing me with a shipping label to return the camera for service and said I should have it back in about 5 days. This is the first time they have heard of the issue and assume it's some sort of a fluke thing. So far, they're getting two thumbs up for service.
Unfortunately I really didn't have a chance to do any low light shooting conditions before it quit working. I'll have to let you know after I get it back.

Okey thanks for the reply. I think i'm 85% sure i'm going to buy this camcorder, i just need to know the last details.
If the different SD cards has any impact on the video quality.
How long it shoots on a 32gb card in best quality.
And if you need anything that dosent come with the cam, to actually transfer the files proberly.
I hope you can help me with these things before i buy the camcorder :)
Thanks.
