Its because the wii remote is inside it. And theres nothing blocking the infrared (spelling?) signal sent from the black thing on top of the wiimote, into the sensor bar.

The Wii 'Lightgun's are nothing but casings around the wiimote. the Wii itself doesn't how or with what you hold the wiimote, so long as it's within range, the Wii will be happy and recieve the signal.

Most games designed for use with the zapper have a control setup designed for 'lightgun' use.
