@KillswitchEngage42 There's a lot of non-swing jazz. In fact, swing is a sub-genre of jazz. I would say that a lot of these ideas are SUPER jazzy. With a rock edge.
i honestly wish he would bring back some of his old-playing (the style, that is)- not to say that he hasn't improved, of course- bloody hell, i mean, he's a monster now but.... it would be nice to hear some of the unique phrasing from the early days...:S
@MrKiller92 he plays just as cleanly, if not cleaner these days, but he uses a much more processed lead sound now, and shredding with the delay he uses makes it sound a wee bit sloppier than it actually is
Man jp back in the early 90s and present time is like night and day.. he is really heavy (which is still amazing) but I prefer him during the old days.
That's what I'm talkin bout! Hey was so fluid/phrase heavy/chromatic/experimental with the occasional jazz harmonies it was outta this world. This video is the perfect example of that. Nowadays, he's all about playing as fast as possible, which I still appreciate, but the cool note choice just isn't as prominent. BTW-I remember this jam was an interlude between songs during the Awake tour. When Jordan joined the band, I was hoping the experimentation would be elevated to another level
@MusicianofStark yeah it's a pitty. I guess he still can play like that, but for some reason he rejects it. He could have done some cool jazz stuff in his solo album.
He should go back to Ibanez guitars. His tone was MUCH better. It's way too harsh with the Music Man. The MM is a great instrument, but his Ibanez and Mark IV combination was phenomenal tone.
Laney is part of the Hoshino family (Ibanez, Tama Drums, other bands) and especially back then JP would have used gear that was available @ NAMM as opposed to the effort & cost of flying out his own gear.
from there other namm video with the bored chick...they cut out they part here where he comes up puts some power on the hand and introduces this song as "Barfbag".
Agreed....he is a very different player than he used to be. Sure, he still has this kind of playing in him, and always will, its just not longer his base.
no, you can see a laney vh100r half stack to his left, but i know that he wouldn't play those amps anyway. what a disgrage, they make wonderful guitar amplifiers.
If thats a tension free neck, I've got that very guitar hanging in my room right now. Probably a bit too early for those necks though.....maybe? Dont recall what years they were sold.
OK, I got a "part" of these song on one of my cd blootegs, recorded in switzerland 1993, thats what these cd is....Is for the final ending for "To Live Forever" and its very cool by the way. Actually these cd is like the whole When Dream & Day Unite with James Labrie, all the song are recorded live and Im not joking
@HektorInfante Isn't that the truth. Its not hard btw to see that thats the guitar the JPM came from, but I dont know what model is is, is it a prototype?? Doesnt look like an ordinary RG, there isn't any middle single coils for one.
@HektorInfante Yeah I can agree with you on that. I liked John's older stuff too, especially the cool jazzy phrasing he used to do. Now he just plays so damn fast, everything is a blur....
Nope. DT played it live a fair amount on the I&M tour and JP used his rough demo (drum machine, easy keys) for NAMM and clinics back then. The live version with MP, JM ahd KM absolutely SLAYS this version.
That's actually why l liked DT with Derek on keys. *Not* coming from a heavy prog/instrumental background, he brought a Jazz/Fusion side to the band that was really interesting. On the "Mind Control" bootleg (1-24-95 Japan) they play a jazzy, funky outro to "Take The Time" that's by far the best "live improvisation" I've ever hear from them.
yes it is lol im glad someone knows slow motion an barf bag an gemini lol i remember when i first heard slow motion it was like 2 years ago i was speech less

He may be improvising some of the leads, but the overall structure and chord progressions are not. Just listen to the pre-programmed drum track, it's not just a continuous 4/4 loop. C'mon now...
