  • also used by madlib for that one guilty simpson track on low budget hi-fi music.

  • This sample is also used in Vanilla - Time To See

  • @soulfulcooking Thank you. lol...and you???

  • Valerie you can say you did find true love in Nick and it showed.

  • It would be nice if there is a karaoke version of the song. Valerie is talented singer, songwriter and musician. So was her husband Nick Ashford, may he rest in peace.

  • Is this song available on iTunes? It's pretty nice. Groovy 70s soul music.

  • press 5 for the part 50 cent used

  • damn this is so fine i don't know why people just make fucking noise today

we need more music like this

  • @Mreleezy You're right, all we hear today is gale force warbling.

  • Nujabes also did a cover of this song in his last unfinished beat

  • @ssun8 *sample not cover...sorry

  • Love Valarie's voice on this song, always thought this would have been good for The Supremes with Cindy on lead, she has a beautiful soft voice, tho Mary could have done this as well

  • Breakbot used this in his Annie Mac minimix, too.

  • Thank God for Hip Hop. It saves the souls of old songs lost in time. . . .

  • For me she is as great a songwriter as Carole King. One of Motown's most important assets.

  • OMG every song i find that would be good to sample i find out its used. its hard to find good songs to sample for hip hop beats that havent been used yet.

  • @KushhSmoke check oit a song by Phyllis Hyman called Baby Im Gonna Love You, love that song and i dont think its ever been sampled yet

  • @MotownMaster I just listened to it and i think it wud be really good to sample, ima use it and ill put the beat on youtube and send you the link. thanks!

  • The summer of 1972 at the age of 16 I bought this album by Valerie. Loved this song, loved this song. The best!

  • @Vincent50 That's funny, because I bought the 45 this same year. It took me years to find on CD. I used to try to sing it just like Val (LOL).

  • I've been wondering where those samples came from- lovely song!

  • Comment removed

  • My Producer B. Roc Sampled this Subscirbe me if you wanna hear the outcome when i post it!!!!

  • tell him girl..x

  • I like how some people shit on rap and hip hop, that hole genre yet i bet most of their favorite songs have been sampled... now doesnt that make what they think is good automatically in the same category

  • valerie is a very talented woman. first time i heard her sing was back in 1973. she had a single out at the time entitled " think i'm gonna take this ride " . very good song writer.

  • I'm pretty sure that this is the song sampled in With You by Lil Wayne... hmm i'm trying to find that sample...p.s. this song is beautiful

  • @Tbaby15Angel Benjie by Valerie Simpson

  • @MartyNotes omg thank you, i was trying to find it... the instrumental at the beginning of this sounded similar to it but i knew it didn't have the vocals in With You..... anyways, thanks! =D

  • I'm pretty sure that this is the song sampled in With You by Lil Wayne... hmm i'm trying to find that sample...

  • 1:13 literally jizzed in mah pants

  • SIllyy little girllll simple little girl, you didnt want me when i wanted you!

    Haha SILLY. ;)

  • She was beautifull!

  • been looking for this a long time

  • Tempo bom, curti muito esse som que maravilha o tempo não volta mais namorei muitoooo rs.

  • O.J. Simpson Remixes

    Madlib is the best.

  • haha silly....fucking music to my ears daaamn

  • NOSSA, ESSA MÚSICA ME LEMBRA OS MELHORES MOMENTOS DA MINHA VIDA, DÉCADA DE 70 ONDE NÃO TINHA TANTA VIOLÊNCIA, PODÍAMOS IR NOS DIVERTIR NOS BAILES COM NOSSA TURMINHA NUMA BOA, SEM PERIGO. FOI A MELHOR ÉPOCA DA MINHA VIDA.

  • babu also sampled this

  • please don't confuse Rap w/HipHop, NOT the same thing.....

  • this song is jaw-droppingly good, really should have been more popular. people, let's cherish these singers (val simpson's still around and performing, i think) and not wait till they're gone. if there's anything i've learnt from mj's death, this [treasuring their presence and appreciating their songs] is it. Thanks for posting this!

  • @kokede this were one one the hits back in the 70's we had it going on

  • U gotta feel her this shit smooth as hell u gotta love it

  • I've been looking for this song for a year on here and I finally found it! Great song, better than 50's.

  • murs is down man

  • big chune!!

  • 50 who?

  • murs

  • @honeycone71 GET OVER IT...please no ones disrespecting the original artist..hip hop producers find that soul in these tracks which is hard to re-create today and make something new with it...will you just get over it.?..thousand of songs have been sampled..you say no one cares? guess what i do

  • @honeycone71 no offense but your comment is very ignorant.i agree that the original will always be the best but to call hip hop crap, i'm sorry but that is just downright disrespectful...producers like 9th wonder, just blaze, hi-tek, the late j dilla, and so many countless others 'sampled' songs in respect and in turn created timeless music...I'm sure you've heard 'TROY'...that song is no way, shape, or form 'hip hop crap' so before you go out and bash an entire genre think about wat your saying

  • DJ Babu - Silly

  • 9th wonder flipped this the best

  • @DCUK1000 9th wonders was really good!! but be sure to check out: REZILS - BRODERSKAP its prod by masse salazar... its swedish but its still a great beat!!!

  • just when I think IVE found a sweet track to sample..

  • amen . Every great sample has been used before.

  • @SweetlakeReality

    that's why you dig dog...

  • @SweetlakeReality definitely not true

  • Its hard to find samples like these.

  • C RAYZ WALZ- 86

  • Rezils - Broderskap

  • " i don't view sampling as "stealing", i have to beg to differ, poster. as much as i love certain songs by certain artists, soem don't sample. like pms by mary j blige or tears dry on their own by amy winehouse. those songs are intact. only the lyrics have changed from 'simply beautiful' and 'ain't no mountain high enough' to what they are for these artists. but they do encourage people to listen to originals--as you say and i am so glad you do!

  • i just noticed this is also sampled in "I Must love you" by madlib & guilty simpson

  • 2 fans on "best friend" with 50 cent and olivia, the samples begin on 1:24 and throughout.

  • might not be a sample, but i can definitely hear some of the intro melody in talib kweli - never been in love.

  • Wow, I haven't heard this song in 30+ years! Thanks for posting one of these long-forgotten slow jams.

  • 9th did silly girl for murs ft joe scudda

and hi-tek did best friend for 50 cent

good sample by both of those producers

  • 9TH REMADE THIS TRACK CRAZY LOVE IT

  • best friend was produced by hitek

  • how old is this song?

  • fuck.. </3,,, :'( life sucked,,,

  • Nah I think we're just going to keep sampling more and more...sorry...

  • Please Rap artists I beg you, do not sample classics like this from time gone by. This was when music was music and singers were real singers. If we continue to listen to this inferior form of music and let them take samples from classics we are condoning a music industry that has gone done hill since the early nineties and has and sadly will never make the hights of the 70s and 80s again.

  • if rap didnt sample it i wouldnt ever have known about this song, and thats just plain wrong

  • @cutsupreme6 hahaa same here.

  • @cutsupreme6 I know me too!!!!!!! Many great rap songs sample from great music!!!

  • @notoriousdan562 not just rap, but a great hip hop instrumental from Nujabes as well :P

  • She probably wrote this too! Val is a beast (so is Nick)!

  • @cutsupreme6 Freeway sampled it too.

  • @HaliB75 What's Freeway's song called?

  • Comment removed

  • @myusername94 Free People. It's not a direct sample.

  • many people have forgotten the old soul music back from the 60s and 70s, but hip hop was one of the first genres to sample these records. i would never have started listening to lionel richie or the stylistics had i not heard the samples used in my favorite hip hop songs. i don't view sampling as "stealing", because they don't take the entire song and claim it as theirs, they chop parts from it and loop it to make it their own. to me these hip hop artists opened my eyes to a past generation..

  • I think the same arguments people like you make for why music is shitty now....and why hip hop shouldn't sample is contradictory.

I can bet that 90% of the people watching this video found out about it THROUGH hip hop sampling it, myself included.

If anything people like you and all the artists who bitch about sampling should be giving us credit for actually even taking the time to dig up their dusty record in some basement when it woulda been sitting there otherwise.

  • sampling and playing the actual instrument/singing and etc are two different talents all together. some people can chop and making a good beat some people can't sing.

i think music today suck because they dont put in the work like they did back in the day or how guys like 9th and dilla put in the time to make a quality beat or how murs takes the time to make sure the lyrics make sense.

but yeah, i totally agree with you.

  • also sampled by C-Rayz Walz on '86

  • This was a sleeper than and now. Way to go Valerie. This should be a re-release. I listen to this track over and over.

  • This song is so powerful! I've played this cut over and over and over again! It brings back such great memories. It's truly a classic! Love you Valerie!!!

  • Awesome song!

  • Wow!

  • I have heard this song several times in the car with my mother when I was young listening to quiet storm but I did not know this was Valarie Simpson. Still sounds good today. Songs were so short back then.

  • 9th wonder

  • where is Jimmy simpson????

  • I've loved this song from the first time I heard it when it came out on the album in the seventies.

It's not the picture shown above but I believe it's the album where she's perched, open legged, on a metal and leather stool. It's a hot, hot, HOT album cover and of course, filled with great music.

Yes, Valerie Simpson (and Nick) has been under-appreciated. Many a diva, and many a wanna-be-diva, owe this woman so much.

    Luv you Val (and Nick).

  • how in the world are ashford and simpson STILL together???

  • It's called LOVE baby!

  • nick ashford is from my town willow run /ypsilanti michigan.he was taught well by his loving mother.

  • Hadn't heard this in a while. Thanks for posting it.

  • dam 9th killed it i wish i would have got it first..lol

  • haha im here wishing the samething man. fuck 50, murs lyrically killed this track alongside with my boy 9th wonder.

  • yea 9th did real good with this

  • bigg chune!!

  • 9th got off hard ;D yeeee

    nonsense ;D

  • This one is great...

    ...50 cent is whack !

  • A true classic jam....

    P.S.... 50 cents is garbage.

  • You should check out Sharon Forrester's lovers version - it is better.

  • I love this song and i keep playing it all the time.

  • I prefer 9th Wonder/Murs sampling rather than 50 cent bullshit.

  • Hey...don't hate on Hi-Tek...he produced that 50 cent song...and honestly i LOVE 9th wonder but hi-tek was more creative with the sample than 9th was...

  • agreed homie. i'd take 9th wonder's production almost 99% of the time over hi-teks..... but tek ripped this song. the intro in his version kills it alone.

  • @piercedfromwithin I don't know, Hi-Tek is much sicker on the drums than 9th Wonder, like 10x sicker

  • co-sign, I'm a fan of both but 9th sampling of this song was far superior than Hi-Tek's.

  • I played this on a little portable record player for my now deceased husband it brings back memories of being in love i also use to play "So in love" by leroy hutson

    Thanx for the post.......

  • Bless your heart Luv-Music holds us together sometimes

  • Think we've all been silly in love.

  • And to think she used to imitate Tammi Terrell's voice when she and Marvin Gaye recorded their last two albums!!

  • Great record. Soul at it's very, very best!

  • Thanks Val this song assured me that I am only Human to Love again even though it hurt like heck . Trina

  • yeah 9th did a great job with this sample, nice find. and Murs just did a fuckin awesome job with the lyrics, true art of storytelling. Murs 3:16

  • I must be getting old. I remember listening to this 45 in 1971. I still have the record and it still sounds good scratches, skips, and all.

  • You not getting old baby your just going back in time to a more gentle/pleasant/ time in life with this song sill/funny how music real classic/vintage music can do that

  • LOL! I hear ya.

  • YO Murs killed this

  • Madlibs version goes Hard...

  • Her and her husband are soul music royalty

  • i was silly aswell forgave me....

  • Valerie's voice is absolute bliss! Her two solo albums on Motown or now collector items and import copies are going for $24 and up--now that's timeless music.

  • also sampled by Guilty Simpson (Stones Throw Records)

  • I love this song and could not find it for years. Valerie Simpson and Nick Ashford are my favorite duo. Thanks for finding this song for me.

  • was she still with motown when she recorded this

  • yes, back in 70s

  • Wasnt i silly ima youngin but dis go hard

  • MURS AND 9TH WONDER YALL!!!!

  • u2.

  • she was a cutie!

  • Silly little girls!

  • I'd bees feelin de soul grooves!

    de best! de best!

  • Valerie Simpson's vocals, Man, what can I say? It's basic. But I'm the kind of person that finds beauty in things that are Basic!!!

  • yes you put your finger on it! very simple yet beautiful her voice is cool like and old faded photograph that strikes the eye

  • What year was this first released?

  • 9th Wonder sampled this for MURS "Murray's Revenge" album. i think the song is called "Silly Girl".

  • yea a hi tek did the 50 version

  • Oh this is the song 50 sampled. I though it was Denice Williams "Silly" lol

  • I was 7yrs old blowin this, thanks to mom and dad i have that olskool inbeded in me, and of course i passed it on to my kids, always know when my daughter having issues she'll play this and she's 24yrs
