A french masterpiece!!!!! Jean-Pierre Jeunet is one of mine favourite european directors he truly has his own style. This is a true classic, music, acting, screenplay, art direction, photography and costumes are all top notch! Vive La France!
yes, he may have forgotten her. But after thinking she lost him...after having not seen him for so long...I think even if he didn't come to love her like he did again, seeing him alive was enough. besides, you never know, they found each other again, therefore he may fall for her again.
And let me suggest you to visit Brittany, this is where most of the scenes where shot..you will see those beautiful pink granit rocks and this beautiful village which name is Locronan ^^
precious scene in the cinema world...the image is absolutely beautiful, the music is stunning and story holds until the last second...and what amazing actors, Miss Tautou and Mister Ulliel ! Besides what is even more pârticular about this film and this scene is that it captures what is very special to me about WWI, is the loss of innocence..after that war I think the vision of the world changed.
I am planning to study abroad in France, this summer, I watched this one scene a few times and just now didn't look at the subtitles. I understood about 80% of the dialogue.
There is nothing stronger in this life than LOVE. Nothing. This film is so ":emotionally orgasmic". It stretches the emotions to the edge for 2 hrs. with it's drama, suspense & beauty...then brings you to a beautiful climax. For a few moments you feel drained, frozen, as you listen to the music & sob uncontrollably. It's one of those great films that builds tension...releases, then fills you with a peace & satisfaction that you won't soon forget. Simply wonderful.
let me share my story for the past few weeks, my girlfriend whom i plan to marry for real(she is the 1st planned to be the only) lasting at least 1 and a half years, suddenly broke up. reasons were not clear, only in in her words that was not my fault, and no other party involved, didnt want commitment in a relationship, in that i loved too much
this movie which i watched on cable on the second to the last date we had is giving me the driving hope to get her back.
@Pwinceshxxxmolly Well, they may renew their relationship again....and at least he is still the same sweet youth she loved....and not some battle scarred, hardened shell.
If this was a Hollywood movie Manech would have taken one look at Mathilde and recovered his memory -triumphant "love conquers all" final scene. This movie is a bit more "realistic". Mathilde gets what she wants (she proves her lover is alive) but not what she needs (to have her lover returned to her).
@mrsotter19 I think that perhaps this makes it all the more bittersweet..... Just think of it. Mathilde has a chance that few are given. She will perhaps get to re-live the romance of her and Manech all over again. You can see that he is still a sweet soul, and he smiles quite warmly at her. He may not recall the love that they shared, but with time, they will have a new love between them.
This is so much better than how Hollywood would have handled it! I agree with you completely! :)
This clip gets me every freakin' time. Everytime I think of "Does it hurt when you walk?" I start getting choked up. This is easily in my top favorite 5 films of all time. It's definitely my favorite Jeunet film (I know, I know, it's blasphemy to say that...)
very true and pure love, the best kind... she is just at peace knowing he is well and alive, regardless of anything else... i still remember the time and theater where i first saw this movie and even the person i saw it with.. now thats a memorable film
If I were to save but one film for posterity it would be this one. My wife and I have been avid movie fans for over 50 years and this is the best film we've ever seen. It has everything, and true work of art - and even a happy ending.
ok...im a little confused, ive never seen this movie, but from what i know they were in love, he goes away to war, and a lot happens, he comes back...but why is he acting as if he doesnt know her??? shouldnt he be acting happy (to say the least) to see her???? pLeAsE fill me in!! it will be MUCH appreciated!
ho lost his memory during the war.. as a result the meet again and the fall in love just the same way as in the start of the movie...its a very good and touching movie.

I don't like this movie, it's some forced romanticism that turns into kitch easily. Also, Audrey Tautou will be always Amélie in Jeunet's movies, that was irritating me all the time.
are you for real? This is an awesome film - yes there are lots of Amelie in it but you will not find the bombing scene in any Hollywood movie - shrapnel and dirt flying, trench cave ins - you get fireworks in other films. It is the details and the nonsenses that make Jeunet the greatest director in the world. He also keeps the pace great - not too slow and not too fast. The photography is beautiful and the sound tracks are well chosen.
omg...this scene is sooo emotionally sad. It's so heartbrealing to know that he doesn't remember her!:(after all that they've been through...buh i'm glad she finally found him in the end:)they're both sooo gorgeouz!!^^
HAHa of course she would stare at him for that long who wouldn't it's gaspard! i want to see this movie i don't care if i spoiled it already i knew they would meet each other in the end not a complete shock really.
I watched this film in my own prison cell years ago, and I cried like a baby that night. This is the most hauntingly beautiful scene I have ever seen
