@rcrc280 To a look at the building plans. For Ogre, the front and rear (driven) tread sprockets are fixed, (and there are a number of smaller supporting bogies wheels in between). Where the tread would usually return to the front "on top", there's a third sprocket wheel, stretching the treads into a slight triangle shape. This third sprocket is on an arm that can pivot in or out, and is held out against the tread by a spring (LEGO shock absorber).
@CognitiveNetwork I originated this design - both the launching system, and the tank chassis it sits on. I could certainly make it go faster... but that just makes it tougher to control. And no *WAY* would I actually shoot and anyone / anything with this... not remotely that cruel.
I'm dreaming of making an assault heli, probably Apache or Mi28, on a quite huge scale with built-in wireless camera and an automatic customized BB-gun, then let it fly and shoot everything what moves!
@john637295 I use the LEGO Powerfunctions system - it's an IR remote control for two motors. A 2nd remote and receiver allows for the third motor to shoot the Hailstorm gun system. This also allows the NXT to "remote control" the tank it rides on using the Hitechnic IRLink.
@zacharybaringer Hmm, you might want to rethink that (read the other comments). Happily married, with a PhD in physics, employed teaching, with three kids, and my "no life" with LEGO has been good enough that I talk with folks at LEGO about their product (even to the point of beta testing for them).
Huh. Yeah, I'll take "nerd" if that;s what it implies. Did I mention I also receive royalties from a book I co-authored on LEGO? ;)
@zacharybaringer What I'm saying is that being a nerd is a good thing. Basically everyone who is famous for actually doing something is a nerd. (Famous actors or sports players don't count. All they do is entertain people.) The guy who invented video games was a nerd, the guy who invented gasoline engines was a nerd, and the guy who invented YouTube was a nerd.
@zacharybaringer Back in the days, the term "nerd" was considered a compliment. Now a days, it's being misused, and interpreted as something totally different. It's disgusting how it has changed.
@Flare1015 You know, I hadn't noticed that! Too bad, it would have been nice to have them all firing. It looks like the feed for that launcher was temporarily jammed (they do occasionally, although all the shaking normally jars them loose fairly quickly). All four launchers feed from a single tray, so it probably low on spheres... just stuck for a bit :).
@tommytunes0700 Certainly. The launcher (nicknamed "Hailstorm") was actually designed and built first (it's the more complicated portion of this project). There's a video of it in my YT account, and there are even instructions of a sort up on LEGO's NXTLog website (user brdavis42)
@colin36100 It would cost around $250 in parts alone - LEGO has never made this as an official set, it's just something I put together (although I have photodocumented instructions for it). Perhaps surprisingly... not everything in the world can be instantly bought on-line ;)
@ThePetterx The balls it shoots are called 'Zamor spheres'. LEGO still makes them (they are used in the latest robotics set), but does not sell them in bulk any more (they used to in the Bionicle line). You can probably buy them from resellers on Bricklink.
@GOBLINWIZARD8 Lots of different sets have the treads, including a number of the City sets, and the treads alone can be special ordered from LEGO Education.
@randommovies45 It's not radio-controlled - it's IR controlled, using the LEGO Powerfunctions IR Remote. It *could* be radio-controlled, using (for example) another NXT and connecting them via Bluetooth (this is how I control LNE/Packbot in some of my other videos). As to the parts... well, parts are parts :). I get them from various LEGO sets, just like anybody else.
@Nudeliful If you look at the Brickshelf gallery I mention, you can see pictures of step-by-step building instructions (several people have built Ogre from them).
@MrYoyopro I don't know, I've not counted... a lot. Accelerometers, gyros, IRLinks, EOPDs, custom jobs I requested and worked with them on, beta sensors they asked me to test and blog, etc.
@benbotben Same place anybody else would... I bought them :). bought them in sets when they were available, bought them off Bricklink when they weren't.
@the21andonly It's not geared down. In fact, it could probably be geared *up* (slightly). Look closely, and you'll see that only one Zamor launcher is powered at a time (the phasing is carefully arranged so they all fire at different points in the cycle). Normally the motor driving a Zamor launcher is only under load during a small portion of the cycle (when the sphere is being pushed against the launcher), so I arranged it so that never happens at the some time for two launchers.
hey.. just wanna ask. i built ogre. but frm the back, i noticed the sides (linkthreads) are actually bent outwards. just wanna know, is yours like that too???
@brdavis5 ok i fixed it... thanks :D when u buy the nxt link, does it come with an instruction sheet on how to use it or how to use it in programming??
@TheMadspy300 I bought them when they were sold at stores and from LEGO online. I don't think they are now, however you could order them off of Bricklink.
just asking though. is there a way to use the M size motor at the shooter instead of the xl motor?? cuz whenever i try to use it, the M motor jams up. so is there a way of building it such that i can use the M motor?
@MrYoyopro Sure - just gear it down so it runs slower, but delivers more torque. A 5:1 stage should do it if memory serves (and you might be able to do it even faster, like with a 3:1 gearing). It will just run slower.
@brdavis5 uhm.... whattya mean 5:1 gearing or 3:1 gearing?? i dont really get it :P... and just another question, are you using the NXT IRLink Sensor or the NXT IRReceiver Sensor??
@MrYoyopro Just use gears to slow down the motor: have the M motor drive a small gear (8t maybe) and use that small gear to drive a larger gear (24t). The result will be that the 24t gear turns 1/3rd as fast, but with 3x the torque. Ogre uses the IRLink to have the NXT control the PF system... that way the NXT can be in control, turning this from a remote control toy to an autonomous robot.
yes thnx so much fr ur instructions. i finally made an exact replica of ogre just tat the colour scheme is a bit off :D thnx so much. it really is alot of fun to play with :)
Incorparate it into a sentry gun case thing, and turn into a scanning sentry gun. and if it needs to move, make it so that it can fold the tripod and fold out tires. Great robot by the way!
Wow! That's really amazing! I like how you used the IR-link you make it scan for targets, really creative. My only criticism is that it lacks power and range, but you can't really fix that because the zamor launchers are factory-made. The second one is that the tread base needs a little improvement. It' not that good for climbing over things like books & boxes. Maybe if combined Ogre and LNE...
@Flare1015 There actually is a way to increase the power (a true pure-LEGO construction), but it wasn't worth doing (small increase in power). Range could be much better if the turret could elevate, but that made things really bulky and not "sleek-looking". This could certainly be mounted on a LNE-class base, but it would again be rather top-heavy... or really really massive :). Ogre's not perfect - but it's a good compromise.
@brdavis5 I guess these improvements would kind of ruin the nice look of it :(, but regardless, it is a fantastic creation. And yes, nothing is oerfect :( 5/5. Good Job!
@MrYoyopro I have no idea what the smallest assortment of sets is that would provide the pieces to build this (even if color was not an issue). I've never even made up a parts list, although the "rare" parts are easy enough to identify (52 tread links, three XL PF motors, two PF receivers, two PF IR remotes, four Zamor shooters (old style), two Zamor magazines, two shock absorbers, two 40t gears, etc.). Ignoring the NXT and US sensor, this would still cost about $200 to build, perhaps more.
:O THAT IS SO SWEET!!!! WHERE DO U GET ENGINES AND MOVING PEICES LIKE THAT THOUGH??? i dont know where to get them :( i think it be pretty cool to make something LIKE that... gj ;D best ive ever seen!!!
@cracisbd There are a number of sets that have Power Functions motors in them... and the motors, controllers, battery boxes, etc., can also be ordered from LEGO Shop-At-Home individually. I'm glad you like Ogre... it *is* a lot of fun to play with :).
@BigSlickSerpents Thank you - it does seem to be high on the coolness scale, and it's a lot of fun to play with :). The black NXT was a limited edition that you could purchase separately. It was never included in a kit. Still looks pretty nice, and gives some nice alternatives on color schemes.
@TheLastUgly From various LEGO sets. Look on the website, there are several that use them, and the tread links themselves are sold at LEGO Education here in the States.
@MrYoyopro Becasue an LDD would be a whole lot of work and not a lot of fun (compared to actually building with LEGO). If you want to build it, you certainly can - others have, from the pictures I've put up on Brickshelf. But an LDD of something with all sorts of odd angles in it would be... tricky.
@LegoRobot17 Thank you! That's high praise. I suspect LEGO is actually watching creations like this... for instance, there's a Zamor shooter in the latest version of the NXT MINDSTORMS set, so they certainly are paying attention to what "we" fans do. I've also been a part of the MUP / MDP / MCP program for... a while now.
@The535353 Yes. Ogre is built using PF motors, and can be controlled by a PF remote control (two, actually). In the video, much of the time it is under remote control. But since the NXT can also use an IRLink, it can act as the "remote control" as well.
@XKopaka85X Yep. The Ogre incorporates what I've called a "Hailstorm" launcher, that uses four of the Bionicle launchers. It also uses two of the Zamor "magazine" pieces as part of the ammo feed system.
@kinklestar You need a lot more than the NXT 2.0 set... in fact, excpet for the autonomous behavior, you don't need the NXt at all. The motors are PF motors (not in the 2.0 kit), the treads are from various kits (mostly construction-themed, not NXT 2.0), and it needs at least four Zamor shooters (one supplied in the NXT 2.0 kit), as well as a lot of other parts (half-width beams, spring shock absorbers, etc.).
So no, it certainly takes more than the 2.0 kit... & I don't have a parts list.
@mthai66 Why? Did you think I named it "Ogre" by accident :) ?
I have the game, played it as a kid as well as as an adult. Read the books (Bolo series). Note that another of my creations on YT, PackBot, has a full name of (L)EGO (N)XT (E)xplorer, or LNE... of the Dinochrome Brigade :) .
I was reading those books long before there was an internet :)
@HaloForge149 Zamor spheres, another LEGO part or product that was sold in several of the Bionicle sets. The idea became so popular that now the NXT 2.0 sets (the latest in LEGO's robotics line) also carry the spheres and shooter parts. The shooter only works if it is firing sphere's of *just* the right size, so marbles, paintballs, gumdrops, and ahost of other suggestions *don't* work... which is probably a good thing from the standpoint of LEGO legal :)
that really rocks you can make like that you can go in the house and attack the facking cat or enter to a room close it thtow ball in the enter of the door hidde the ogre and when somone enter !!PLAM!! he falls or she and when he go out you take out the ogre or you can use it to spie a girl in the bath lol
@XeroedOut The functional four-sphere shooter took a good bit of time, as did an ammo-loading tray. Building a functional tank around it took only a couple of days, but the "central" section took months, off and on... and I developed one of the first Zamor shooters for the NXT a couple of years ago.
@ssjRangazee They are "Bionicle Balls" - or Zamor spheres, to use the official LEGO name. And don't worry about the camera, the sound you hear is the spheres bouncing off a CD case in front of the camera lens :)
This is slightly scary lol... This could be like some type of Riot Control robot 'cause those Zamor Spheres hurt like hell.. Awesome work... You should try and give it some type of aiming system so you can aim up and down.
@FMWRULES454 Adjusting the elevation (tilt) would be very difficult, as the balls only feed into the launchers due to gravity: change the angle, and mess up the ammo feed (not to mention in this case the open ammo tray). I've built versions that can tilt & still fire, but they have much smaller ammo magazines. I've also mounted this on a turret, but the result was too bulky... it just didn't "look right".
@misaluvakatsa It shoots Zamor spheres - another LEGO piece. It does so fairly fast, on average better than 4 meters/sec. As to how far, well, that depends on the angle and/or how far they can roll :)
@cherisong Perhaps. The estimated price in parts alone is probably around $350 US. Still want it? And if you do, you can build it from the planes I've put out (others have).
@Lostworld711 I did, sort of. Go to LEGO's NXTlog, and search for "Hailstorm" or user "brdavis42", where I document it more fully (even have instructions for the launching system). Is there something specific you needed to know?
O my god

@cracisbd There are a number of sets that have Power Functions motors in them... and the motors, controllers, battery boxes, etc., can also be ordered from LEGO Shop-At-Home individually. I'm glad you like Ogre... it *is* a lot of fun to play with :).

By far...You made THE coolest Lego Tank I have seen! Bravo!!
BTW...Does the new black NXT module come in a kit? Or is that something you just need to buy separately?
BigSlickSerpents 1 year ago
@BigSlickSerpents Thank you - it does seem to be high on the coolness scale, and it's a lot of fun to play with :). The black NXT was a limited edition that you could purchase separately. It was never included in a kit. Still looks pretty nice, and gives some nice alternatives on color schemes.

great. now good luck finding all those zamor spheres...

WHERE DOES EVERYONE GET THE TREADS?
TheLastUgly 1 year ago
@TheLastUgly From various LEGO sets. Look on the website, there are several that use them, and the tread links themselves are sold at LEGO Education here in the States.
brdavis5 1 year ago
this is totally wicked awesome... why not you create a ldd for us.. :)
MrYoyopro 1 year ago
@MrYoyopro Becasue an LDD would be a whole lot of work and not a lot of fun (compared to actually building with LEGO). If you want to build it, you certainly can - others have, from the pictures I've put up on Brickshelf. But an LDD of something with all sorts of odd angles in it would be... tricky.
brdavis5 1 year ago
@brdavis5 oh yea... missed that out XD thnx alot.. u really should sell this set. :) how did u design this robot??
MrYoyopro 1 year ago
u should work for a arm making company or LEGO should recruit you :D

This is amazing u could work for the lego company and this could be a lego set
LegoRobot17 1 year ago
@LegoRobot17 Thank you! That's high praise. I suspect LEGO is actually watching creations like this... for instance, there's a Zamor shooter in the latest version of the NXT MINDSTORMS set, so they certainly are paying attention to what "we" fans do. I've also been a part of the MUP / MDP / MCP program for... a while now.

can it fire paitballs? if they're small enough?
wildwesman34 1 year ago
@wildwesman34 Nope - Paintballs are too soft, and not the right size (the spheres really need to be exactly the right size).

Is it possible to control the tank without nxt?
The535353 1 year ago
@The535353 Yes. Ogre is built using PF motors, and can be controlled by a PF remote control (two, actually). In the video, much of the time it is under remote control. But since the NXT can also use an IRLink, it can act as the "remote control" as well.
brdavis5 1 year ago
Wait, are the launchers off of the bionicle sets
XKopaka85X 1 year ago
@XKopaka85X Yep. The Ogre incorporates what I've called a "Hailstorm" launcher, that uses four of the Bionicle launchers. It also uses two of the Zamor "magazine" pieces as part of the ammo feed system.
brdavis5 1 year ago
@brdavis5 Cool. Great thinking. :)

Instructions please!
robbyfooey 1 year ago
@robbyfooey Sure!
1) read the info on the videos (that's why people put it there).
2) Go to the site mentioned, and find links to a series of pictures to build it.
Easy? No. I generally spend more time thinking up new fun things to do rather than documenting old ones.
brdavis5 1 year ago
sorry for the dumb question, but can you make this tank using NXT 2.0 provided materials only? do I have to buy any other lego set?
kinklestar 1 year ago
@kinklestar You need a lot more than the NXT 2.0 set... in fact, excpet for the autonomous behavior, you don't need the NXt at all. The motors are PF motors (not in the 2.0 kit), the treads are from various kits (mostly construction-themed, not NXT 2.0), and it needs at least four Zamor shooters (one supplied in the NXT 2.0 kit), as well as a lot of other parts (half-width beams, spring shock absorbers, etc.).
So no, it certainly takes more than the 2.0 kit... & I don't have a parts list.

You really need to Google "Ogre" and "Cybertank"
mthai66 1 year ago
@mthai66 Why? Did you think I named it "Ogre" by accident :) ?
I have the game, played it as a kid as well as as an adult. Read the books (Bolo series). Note that another of my creations on YT, PackBot, has a full name of (L)EGO (N)XT (E)xplorer, or LNE... of the Dinochrome Brigade :) .
I was reading those books long before there was an internet :)

did u build the halo tank too?
Garone1998 1 year ago
@Garone1998 Thank you. I'm not sure which tank you are thinking of, but no, this is about the only "tank" I have on YT.
brdavis5 1 year ago
@HaloForge149 Zamor spheres, another LEGO part or product that was sold in several of the Bionicle sets. The idea became so popular that now the NXT 2.0 sets (the latest in LEGO's robotics line) also carry the spheres and shooter parts. The shooter only works if it is firing sphere's of *just* the right size, so marbles, paintballs, gumdrops, and ahost of other suggestions *don't* work... which is probably a good thing from the standpoint of LEGO legal :)
brdavis5 1 year ago
that really rocks you can make like that you can go in the house and attack the facking cat or enter to a room close it thtow ball in the enter of the door hidde the ogre and when somone enter !!PLAM!! he falls or she and when he go out you take out the ogre or you can use it to spie a girl in the bath lol

okke1337 1 year ago
That is stunning, how long did it take you??
XeroedOut 1 year ago
@XeroedOut The functional four-sphere shooter took a good bit of time, as did an ammo-loading tray. Building a functional tank around it took only a couple of days, but the "central" section took months, off and on... and I developed one of the first Zamor shooters for the NXT a couple of years ago.
brdavis5 1 year ago
@brdavis5 Well, I gotta say, it payed off! Congratulations on an amazing piece of work!

be careful that thing almost broke ur lenze lol it knows its being watched.... btw those look like bionicle balls
ssjRangazee 1 year ago
@ssjRangazee They are "Bionicle Balls" - or Zamor spheres, to use the official LEGO name. And don't worry about the camera, the sound you hear is the spheres bouncing off a CD case in front of the camera lens :)
brdavis5 1 year ago
@ssjRangazee ohhh thx but ur gonna break the cd case then lol

Samoutti 1 year ago
This is slightly scary lol... This could be like some type of Riot Control robot 'cause those Zamor Spheres hurt like hell.. Awesome work... You should try and give it some type of aiming system so you can aim up and down.
FMWRULES454 1 year ago
@FMWRULES454 Adjusting the elevation (tilt) would be very difficult, as the balls only feed into the launchers due to gravity: change the angle, and mess up the ammo feed (not to mention in this case the open ammo tray). I've built versions that can tilt & still fire, but they have much smaller ammo magazines. I've also mounted this on a turret, but the result was too bulky... it just didn't "look right".
brdavis5 1 year ago
damn thats Incredible nice work
dust478 1 year ago
that is amazing...what is it shooting and how far/hard does it shoot?
misaluvakatsa 1 year ago
@misaluvakatsa It shoots Zamor spheres - another LEGO piece. It does so fairly fast, on average better than 4 meters/sec. As to how far, well, that depends on the angle and/or how far they can roll :)
brdavis5 1 year ago
@brdavis5 cool thanks :D

Can you make a tutorial about the zamor launching system?
Lostworld711 1 year ago
@Lostworld711 I did, sort of. Go to LEGO's NXTlog, and search for "Hailstorm" or user "brdavis42", where I document it more fully (even have instructions for the launching system). Is there something specific you needed to know?
brdavis5 1 year ago
@brdavis5 kind of. I'm trying to do the same thing, but with one launcher and one power functions motor.
