I heard that the production has picked reality show contestant Samantha Barks to play Eponine in the film version. She's no Lea Salonga or Lea Michele, but at least she can sing. What do you think?
@mmbr01nff Why have you labelled her as a 'reality show contestant' as if to say well she's not really much. Rachel Tucker (currently the West End Elphaba) is one of the best I've seen and she came from exactly the same show.
Samantha Barks is well respected for her portrayal of the role of Eponine at the 25th Anniversary Concert, the Royal Variety and in the West End where I was lucky enough to see her. Don't doubt Cameron Mackintosh's casting, the guy knows what he's doing.

There's a movie version of Les Mis in the works and Taylor Swift was cast as Eponine over Lea Michele and Scarlett Johansson. She doesn't have the role anymore though; Samantha Barks is taking over that part.
Taylor Swift is neither a legitimate singer nor an actress, and while Lea Michele is not the ultimate Eponine Lea Salonga, she is a good fit for the role; better than Samantha Barks or the other Eponines. Taylor Swift will not be the worst in this role, however. The overrated Sutton Foster already holds the record for being the worst Eponine of all time.

Lea Michele has a very good voice, but over the past two years, she has become overrated as an actress, especially on 'Glee'. Plus, she would've been too safe of a choice for the role. People need to give Taylor Swift a chance.
Lea Michele is outstanding and I still can't believe Taylor Swift is gonna be Eponine. She can't sing the way Lea sings this song at all, and besides she's not a good actor. The director made a terrible mistake choosing Swift. At least, if he didn't want to choose Lea, he could have chosen Evan Rachel Wood.
I'm not a fan of Lea Michele but talent-wise, she should be Eponine. In fact, any of the other choices would have been better than Swift, who we all know lacks vocal range and depth.

This is Lea Michele's genre- Broadway. I hate her voice for Glee, but she'd be awesome on Broadway. As for Les Mis, not quite sure where'd she fit.. But Eponine doesn't seem to suit her.
Taylor Swift does not have the gold pipes needed to sing this song the way it has to be sung. It's a hard truth, but it's the truth. When it comes to Broadway songs, she has tin pipes at best. The fact that they turned down Lea Michele, on top of the three other girls is insulting.

Amanda Seyfried might be a good actress (playing Cosette), but her vocals are comparatively a lot weaker. Lea Michelle is suited to play the main character.
I left Lea was a little too old for the Les Miz film. Eponine should be around 14-16. Lea is 25. That's too close to Fantine's age (30) of Hawthaway. It would have been nice to find a great unknown with a Broadway voice to cast. Still..SWIFT?! I'm stunned. She's lovely but really cannot sing, at all. He pitch is all over the place. I heard the director is filming with LIVE singing, NOT using pre-recorded music. That's cool..but big trouble for Swift.

This is a great performance, but Lea DOES squeak a few times between 2:45 and 2:53... It doesn't make it a bad performance, but you can't deny they're there. :D.

I think I finally pinpointed what it is I don't like about Lea Michele. She always makes a really breathy "h" sound before she begins a new phrase, making a lot of words change. EG. "and" becomes "hand". I've never been a fan of hers, but if she ends up getting Eponine in Les Mis (tbh I don't like any of the choices they've got for Eponine...) then I will give her a fair shot. Lea Salonga will always be Eponine for me though.

The fact that you mention a tasteful partial nude scene, which was artistically justified in the context of the musical (again, in my opinion), is a low blow. Also, her work on Glee are performances AS Rachel Berry, a role she plays with a fantastic understanding of her character, and acting and comedy in general. [see next]

I say this to make clear that her role on Glee IS a fine piece of acting and should be regarded as such. [see next]

Taylor Swift does not have the gold pipes needed to sing this song the way it has to be sung. It's a hard truth, but it's the truth. When it comes to Broadway songs, she has tin pipes at best. The fact that they turned down Lea Michele, on top of the three other girls is insulting.

@jater08 Think of it this way: Lea Michelle's strong vocals would overshadow the weaker vocals of the other actresses.Since Éponine is not the protagonist, the producers cannot have someone with her voice to play a supporting character. Amanda Seyfried might be a good actress (playing Cosette), but her vocals are comparatively a lot weaker. Lea Michelle is suited to play the main character.

I left Lea was a little too old for the Les Miz film. Eponine should be around 14-16. Lea is 25. That's too close to Fantine's age (30) of Hawthaway. It would have been nice to find a great unknown with a Broadway voice to cast. Still..SWIFT?! I'm stunned. She's lovely but really cannot sing, at all. He pitch is all over the place. I heard the director is filming with LIVE singing, NOT using pre-recorded music. That's cool..but big trouble for Swift.

I think I finally pinpointed what it is I don't like about Lea Michele. She always makes a really breathy "h" sound before she begins a new phrase, making a lot of words change. EG. "and" becomes "hand". I've never been a fan of hers, but if she ends up getting Eponine in Les Mis (tbh I don't like any of the choices they've got for Eponine...) then I will give her a fair shot. Lea Salonga will always be Eponine for me though.

The fact that you mention a tasteful partial nude scene, which was artistically justified in the context of the musical (again, in my opinion), is a low blow. Also, her work on Glee are performances AS Rachel Berry, a role she plays with a fantastic understanding of her character, and acting and comedy in general. [see next]

The polar opposites of Rachel Berry (arrogant yet insecure, egocentric yet empathic) come together thanks to Michele's take on the part. I say this to make clear that her role on Glee IS a fine piece of acting and should be regarded as such. [see next]

@ruthiehenshalllesmiz As far as "lip-synching to showtunes" is concerned, if you would please take a listen to the recordings she did for West Side Story which were released this Friday, "A Boy Like That" in particular (EXCELLENT high register use), you could hear for yourself that her performances exceed what you said by far. She is however not responsible for the Glee musical production department (auto-tune or not), and her vocal capabilities should not be measured by that. [see next]

I just find it very difficult to read people tearing Lea Michele down, without giving her credit for the great things she IS capable of, regardless of whether she may be a bitch or not in your opinion. Critiquing this performance is one thing, comparing with Lea Salonga is unavoidable, but people calling this performance atrocious or awful is a terrible exaggeration. My 2 cents :)

And yeah maybe she isn't as good of a singer as Idina Menzel, Patti Lapone, or Lea Salonga but calling her a bad singer is completely inaccurate. She is also much younger than those three and less trained. Her voice can still improve. But she has an awesome voice. And for someone who I'm sure can't sing as well as she can you have a lot of negative things to say.
