Magnifico! Un grand ténor prêt à remplacer Rollando Villazon.

  • Where is the beginning of the aria?

  • fantastico,perfecto,hermoso,plenamente convincente

  • Why can't singers be satisfied with who they are? Mezzos want to be sopranos...lyric sopranos and tenors want to go dramatic...and even some of the great ones ruin or diminish their voices.

This aria is quite satisfactory, but what about "Di quella pira" to follow? Manrico needs a clarion, heroic, call to arms, type of voice, and the possessor of a lovely lyric instrument can't resist trying to fill the requirement.

  • I think so too, raythespian. He was stunning for example as Duca at Faenol-Festival in 2000, but nowadays he is disappointing me very much.

  • I'm not so sure he is exagerating too much when singing Trovatore. The role is not so heavy when sung carefully, and Verdi's idea was that the tenor, as he is supposed to be very young, sould be more lyric than spinto. Of course, as we are used to hear Del Monaco or Corelli in the role, we could think Alvarez doesn't fit the role at all. But I think he can do it without damaging his voice. I remember him singing Cavaradossi in Verona two years ago: his voice was actually powerful,...

  • and he was not tired at all (he even made a "bis", singing twice "E lucevan le stelle"). And being as powerful and as fresh as he was, in the very huge Arena di Verona, indicates in my opinion that he can play heavier roles than Il Duca.

  • @raythespian LOL true true

  • He was brilliant....once again I dont know when all you experts expect singers to sing roles like manrico, cavaradossi, radames, chenier, etc....its a lyric tenor who took care of his voice since from the very begining, thats why he can do this. Because he knows how to sing it without getting any harm....its time to sing some verismo...he deserves it.

  • Jerome Tenor, I do not know what you are hearing. "la morte a me parra" is perfect and so is the entire aria. Magnificent! Bravo Marcelo!!!

  • braviiii:)

  • Good, but a great professional like Marcelo Alvarez should seriously worry about moments like his first "la morte a me parra" (at 00:59), more strangled howled than really sang.

  • JeromeTenor, I agree.

  • You should have heard him sing this last year in parma - it was electric

  • i love his voice very much, but unfortunately he doesn`t completely convince me in this role. maybe he schould not yet sing

    such heavy roles?

  • when was this performance?

  • great video and voice!!
