Strange... I'd say the Script one is more VH, but I've read somewhere that he had his original Phase 90 modded, so... maybe the EVH is made to sound like the modded one
I have had an original from 74 and it sounded warm and organic but in higher settings there was a bit of hiss. It was really a one trick pony but it did sound amazing. I still give the edge to the EVH. It has a touch more depth and speed and no hiss. I'm not the "vintage whore" that I used to be. There are a lot of new effects out now that sound just as good if not better than their vintage cousins.
quick question as i am buing on of these tommorow. i love the custom script sound, but i feel like the evh can nail it but it can also get in your face, so dont you think the evh can kinda do all 3, by that i mean it can do the custom, it can do the block, and it can also do its own even more in your face, these are questions not statements, meaning does the evh cover all 3 mxr phasers.?
@diCeanddiMe757 I think he is too, and lets say he is, maybe he doesnt say hes jack black because he wants people to think great "guitar player" rather than "actor" when they think about gearmandude
Does anyone ever notice the litttle amps, even the Dr Z are thin and midrange sounding, no balls, it takes watts and speakers to produce low end. All the effects come off in the mid range does not really sound the same on a half stack much less YTs compression and bandwidth. Hard to judge anything on YT much less the current popular trend of using small amps to put it mildly "sucks", size matters, ask your girlfriend.
The EVH model ahs both the script logo and block logo phase 90 models w the switch toggle. There is no difference puppies. The old phaser was not by-pass like the ne ones nor did it have a power adaptor jack. I have all of them. Great phasers, it seems the EVH is the better buy as you can have both models. The Script has less depth and boldness, the block letter model is bolder and has a stronger phase. Jack White plays really cheesy guitars that do not tune well, and this is NOT Jack Black!
@CarvinTone you seriously dont hear the difference between the Script mode in EVH and the MXR 74 Reissue ? The reissue is way more subtle and more natural.
@SonicBrunoth there is a world of difference. first off one is a flanger and one is a phaser. second, they both sound completely different. you need to watch some more demos.
What do you mean? Eddie was over the top and he used the original didnt he? I like the looks of the EVH and the AC and LED, but the 74 sounds nicer and is true to the classic music of the 70s-80s. Ill take the ugly orange box.
i think pedal shootouts are pointless, guitar is all about preference in your tone! id honestly take em both because id like to vary the tone and have that punchy loud evh flange for the heavy stuff and the warm caress of the mxr script reissue for the laid back or mournful stuff
now what i mean my "pointless" is that one can never decide as a fact which pedal is better. but you can help influence our decision which to buy!!! we love these shootouts keep em coming jack!!!
Well, I've owned a regular "block" Phase 90 for years, and became tired of the added gain and treble sweep, so I tried the R28 cap mod. At first I liked it, but when playing at volume w/ my band, I realized it still was a bit too harsh. I bought the Custom Shop 74 Script version, and problem solved......that nice, warm, musical phase sound is right there in that box.
I agree, though, that the regular and EVH have their place, too. Definitely less subtle, which is good for certain things.
hate it when people flip left handed guitars for right handed. as if there wasnt already enough right handed guitars in the world. o well i guess. lol
Hey could you give me the measurements of the EVH Phase 90 please? I have been looking at getting one but I need the measurements of size to see if it fits on Board? Thanks
The EVH sounds like it adds more mid-range to the signal. I have the EVH but now I wish I got the Script instead. Sounds more true to the original Van Halen sound.
Thanks for posting these - the script version definitely has a more "organic" sound, and the evh sounds a little more "pushed", but less aggressive than the block phase 90. Think I'm gonna get a script to record with now.
hey gearmandude thanks 4 the demo's cool stuff and accent haha! i thought i found a phaser in the mxr phase 90 script just a simple phase to modulate my dsd and ad-80 though im building a board and dont want to mess with batteries :( dont want a boss ph-1 as i have a few boss pedals and like to spilt them up any advice anyone? something deep use for bass too?
Does anyone notice a bleed through on these pedals?
I have heard that since they are not true bypass that can be a problem. I have that problem sometimes when I use my Stone Bender with a Boss BD2. Depending on where my Boss is (after the Stone Bender which is true bypass) it can boost the volume of the Stone Bender even when the effect is not activated.

sorry to interject but in order to do a comparison like this you can't compare the same settings because the pots will be different! Therefore you have to use one as a reference and tweek the other accordingly.Just thought I'd pass that along!
But when it comes to the pedals, the script is better for recording, since it also compresses the top a litle bit, but for live performances, i would just the evh version anyday, why?

How is the MXR for headroom? I'm put off by the standard Phase 90 because a lot of people have said that when used with a clean sound, unless you play really softly you get a lot of break-up/distortion. Either of this clean that up?
Nice demo, I sell both of these at work, and have wanted to replace my vintage phase 90 that I sold a few yearsa go, for me the vintage re-issue is the choice, the EVH was way to dark for my, not transparent enough
good test! think i'll be getting the new one. also i'm pretty sure i read something about trim pots in the EVH model to adjust the speed on the inside or underneath. that could account for the difference. which one do you like better?
whats the difference in price and personally i think theres not much but a subtle difference i might go with the phase 90 cause i dont want eddie vans halens name on my gear no offence to him i think hes a gr8 player but i just like being more individualised
The EVH is the winner for me... seems chewier. The MXR may be wider sounding if that makes sense, but for what I want the EVH is it. I use one and I love it... don't do any VH stuff either. I use it on the high setting and it is very kewl.

I'm looking into the script reissue phase 90. (w/LED, not the 74 script) I really like it's warm subtle phases. However there will be times when I'd want a more of an intense phase so I was wondering if it would be best to get the EVH, because they say it's like having a phase 90, and a script all in one, but then some say that the speed dial on the EVH is a bit faster. So my question is this. Does the script button on the EVH sound the same as the script phase 90?
The original orange pedal clearly shits over the EVH from a great height, in regards to fidelity. Seems to be smother, warmer and has a nice mix of dry>wet ratio. Also, although the EVH version does have a faster speed setting, the Orange version seems to have much more BANDWIDTH and is far more musical.

The '74 wins in so many ways here:
Better wet/dry mix
More useable
Handwired so you're not fucked when something fails like the EVH one
Also, you can add an LED to the '74, you silly kids.
