@alesobenes the nikon d7000 is by far a more complex camera. definitely more professional. but the d40x is great beginner camera, for those of you who have never had a DSLR camera before, its a great introduction. nikon d7000 is a lot more expensive, and if your not experienced in the world of Digital SLR cameras, the d40x would be a fantastic place to start!
When I use the automatic modes, I notice the dark areas are "muddy" or so dark that I have to edit them to even be recognizable. Do you have any suggestions? I have noticed on higher end Nikons that they take better pics - the bright and dark areas of the pics seem to come out better. I don't have the money to buy a higher end model right now. What can I do with the D40x to make the pics look better?
@2007omi don't use auto modes, learn aperture and shutter priority modes. sounds like your metering is off, try the different modes available, usually happens if your in spot metering and have a pic with bright and dark patches, you can also use exposure compensation to brighten it a bit
i see when u have your camera in a mode, when u make the aperture, the shutter speed changes itself, but on my camera,, when i put it in a mode, and change the aperture,, the shutter speed is changing,, but it goes up and down by itself when im not even pressing any buttons! When i first bought the camera it did this, but once i played around with it a bit more it stopped. Ive recently reset it and its going back to this again,, any suggestions?
@dreadqueen14 old message but, in aperture mode you set the aperture value only and the camera changes the shutter speed to keep the correct exposure. to change all the values you need to be in manual mode
I really like Yuerniker's review better I think he touches on some really relevant topics and things that I need to hear about chips before I can buy them especially with so bold a flavor as cheeseburger I mean who else have you heard of that put meat in his chips? Except for nachos but those are different because that's a cheese flavor more than a meat flavor and you can get vegetarian nachos without meat.
I suspect you meant to post that comment on a different video, but I'll leave it here for entertainment value. I too would be interested in those chips...
Thanks for the great review ive owned this camera for quite some time and i have a weird question but i really need the answer too... Why do most dslr cameras have this specific paint job where it looks as if a fizzy drink has been spilt on it? Is there a purpose or i dont know lol ... Maybe you know?
hi if you have a picture from the d40 and the d40x san you really see the difference alot between 6 and 10 megapixels. by the way im not a professional photographer so im not going to be looking at every chadow and crim on the picture.
thanks verry much great vid and a reply would be much apriciated.
I am a beginner and know very little about cameras but have decided to treat myself to an additional lens for my D40x, ( it came with a 18-55mm AF-S) I have decided on the TAMRON 18-250mm or the TAMRON 70-300mm but not sure, any advice would be appreciated Thank you.
Fantastic video's, thank you very much camera lab, I think this one is far better for price than the d60, especially on my budget and considering I lost my DS lite only last week, I don't think I should look after anything more costly than the d40x.
The D40x has been discontinued a long time ago, so look out for good deals on it. Do check the best buys section at cameralabs . com for my recommended models...
hi I've got d40x im a beginner in world of photography..I bought my d40x 2 years ago and now I bought a tamron lens 18-250mm but still I havent master the feature ofmy camera and the lens. can you help me in some sort of visual aid.
I think alot of places offer this camera at or around that price (body only). I'm trying to upgrade to the D300 myself. The D40x is a remarkable camera for the price but I think I've reached the limit of what I can do with it. Can't wait to get the D300.
I have updated prices from reputable stores on my reviews at cameralabs . com - you can go straight to this review by clicking the link to the right of the video window - but bear in mind the D40x has been replaced by the D60. I have a review of that at cameralabs as well though!
You can see reviews of both lenses at cameralabs . com - feel free to ask any Qs in the cameralabs forums... PS - if you go for the Sigma, make sure it's an HSM model or it won't autofocus on your D40x
he did a review on the sigma and nikkor model, i highly recommend the nikon model and according to cameralabs the 18-200mm by sigma, tamaron are also good buys but you get what you pay for!
Yes, but depending on their age there may be restrictions like basic focusing and metering. Also due to the smaller size of the DSLR sensor, their effective focal length will be mutliplied - by 1.5 times in the case of Nikon's DX format DSLRs. See the lens guide at cameralabs . com for full details.
Im not sure where you're seeing it, but the D40x was cheaper than the D80 when it came out. But it's now been replaced by the D60, so you should be comparing the D40, D60 and D80 now...
No it doesn't. The D60 does though. But then neither works particularly well, so I wouldn't worry about it too much - you'll still need to manually clean from time to time with any DSLR.
I'd consider the DX 55-200mm VR if you're on a budget or the 70-300mm VR if you have some more to spend - we have reviews of both at Cameralabs . com. Or maybe a telephoto prime lens, but beware, you'd need an AF-S model to AF with the D40 / D40x / D60. Feel free to post your Q on the Nikon section of the Cameralabs forums...
i hav seen but m confused, i found few difference. plz tell me your expert opinion, if you gonna buy camera which one you will select, Nikon D40x or Cannon D400?
They have slightly different features - go for the one which has the features you prefer. I'd also advise picking them up in person - the one which looks and feels better in your hands will probably be the best bet as the images quality is very similar between them. Any other Qs, feel free to post on the Cameralabs forums!
hello I want to buy a nikon camera, but somebody told me that if i want a nice camera, I have to wit for the new D60, it is true? or there is not much difference with the D60X?
The D60 is an updated version of the D40x with a few new features - scroll down the front page of the Cameralabs website until you see the D60 story for details.
I bought this camera from Best Buy and it came complete with sensor dust and dead pixels. When I took it to Nikon in El Segundo, CA they not only took FOREVER to return it, for some reason they just didn't bother fixing the dead pixels.
You're better off buying a Canon since their service is excellent should you need it.
ive been looking to get the D40x for a couple of months now. Its going to be my first SLR camera. Im not sure if i should go for the D40x or the 80. Can you please give me your advise becaus i dont want to buy the 40x and then want to get the 80. Thank you.
A lot depends on which lenses you think you might use in the future, as the D80 will auto-focus with all Nikkor models, whereas the D40(x) will only autofocus with AF-A lenses. See our verdict page of the D40x on the Cameralabs website for more comparisons.
i went to the NEX today, and decided to get a camera. A Nikon rep told me the d80 is soon to be discontinued. I was set after a long period of debating (due to my budget) on the xti vs. the d40, to get the xti. until today..
d40x was on sale for $740, additional $50 off for a sale, so $690, with the coupon, it totaled less than $600. I had to buy it. The xti came out to $700 with kit lens. I wanted the body alone, but even that was $600 on bhphoto.
Go for the d40 (not x), and a nice lens. If mr. nikon was correct, a successor to the d80 will come out some time next year, and by then, you will have taken great pictures, and have a great small back up to carry around. the d40x at $700 is not worth it to me compared to an XTi. You could buy the xti body, and better glass.
however, if you can't decide, don't worry, thousands of others can't either. Look at the great amount of reviews out there, or better yet, try them out.
no clue... but i'm thinking they're already in the works for one, and figured they're gonna upgrade the sensor. but then again, maybe the rep was just lying to me inorder to make a sale.
Hi, I've compared their differences in the verdict of our D40x review at the Cameralabs website - there you'll also find examples comparing their quality. You should also pick up both models and see which looks and feels best to you...
We've detailed the differences on the Verdict page of our D40x review at the Cameralabs website. The image quality is pretty much the same but the D80 has more features, better build and autofocus support for non AF-S lenses.
The 3 point focusing system (which is to simple) and the fact that it won't remember the manual focus point setting when I switch between shooting modes. It goes back to automaticly selecting focus point (the closest one) and that bugs me to. Besides that I love it. I was choosing between a D80 and the D40x but what finally won me over was the smaller size which I greatly appreciate.
Hi Sir, I love your reviews I find it fair, I just want to ask a suggestions or recommendations, I'm planning to buy a NikonD40x against Canon Digital Rebel XTi, which one do you prefer? do you have a VS. review between this two? thank you sir.
Hello Mastermadman360, it doesn't make as big a difference as you'd think... check out the results pages of our D40 review at the cameralabs website to see the difference between 6 and 10 Megapixels in practice...
The D40x is my first DSLR and I love it. Very small, very light but still very well built, and the pictures are fantastic even tho I don't know what I'm doing.
Hi everyone! Thanks for your kind comments! Hi s1e2a3n4, this is the sort of question Nikon would probably not answer, but it's exactly the kind of thing your partner might know the answer to! What do they think?
.. how the pros and cons will affect the shooting in real life situations. Perhaps adding in a few words on the second hand market (D50, D70s etc) and putting the rest of the money into accessories like a tripod, flash and filters will be a good thing for a few of us with limited budgets ;) Cheers from Sweden!
Hi Gordon, just wanted to encourage you to continue these great, short but to the point reviews. IMHO they're mostly better than the (overly) technical ones out there. Especially the "compared-to" talk and ..
Thanks clear9! I should also add to Jack that the Panasonic FZ8 also falls into his budget and offers plenty of manual control. Otherwise the Nikon D40 is the cheapest modern DSLR...
Hi Jack, glad you like the review! The S9500 is a couple of years old now, so we won't be doing a video of that one I'm afraid, but we do have a full review of it on the Cameralabs website. If you like superzooms, check out our Olympus SP-550UZ video and look out for ones on the Sony H9 and Panasonic FZ8 soon!
Thankyou for the quick review - the reason I asked for the 9500 review is because I am looking into getting a new camera. I'm currently using a Fuji S304, which is okay. But as i'm progressing along I could use a good camera that I can grow into. I've seen the 9500 around and read alot of good reviews.
I've been looking at the Canon DSLR range, such as the 300D/350D. But they're just a little too expensive.
A budget of 200 UK pounds limits you to a compact, but models like the Canon PowerShot A640 give you lots of controls. If you're willing to sacrifice manual control for a long zoom and bigger screen, then the Panasonic TZ3 is neat. See our reviews and Best Buys section on the Cameralabs website. Cheers!
You scare me xD no offence, im going to get this :)

ive been looking to get the D40x for a couple of months now. Its going to be my first SLR camera. Im not sure if i should go for the D40x or the 80. Can you please give me your advise becaus i dont want to buy the 40x and then want to get the 80. Thank you.
danyellbella35 4 years ago

Really? They won't even have a replacement for it before they discontinue it? That's sad
Manz069 4 years ago
no clue... but i'm thinking they're already in the works for one, and figured they're gonna upgrade the sensor. but then again, maybe the rep was just lying to me inorder to make a sale.

i can buy either the Nikon d40x or the Canon Xti which would you recommend?

Hi, I've compared their differences in the verdict of our D40x review at the Cameralabs website - there you'll also find examples comparing their quality. You should also pick up both models and see which looks and feels best to you...

I've always enjoyed cameralabs' camera review. best of the best. thanks!

whats the diff. of d80 to d40x of nikon?..thnk you
jayzean 4 years ago
We've detailed the differences on the Verdict page of our D40x review at the Cameralabs website. The image quality is pretty much the same but the D80 has more features, better build and autofocus support for non AF-S lenses.

Two things annoy me in my D40x.

Yep, head over to the Cameralabs website and have a look at our Nikon D40x review to see results from each and comments on which is best!

What do they think?
cameralabs 4 years ago
my partner makes the D40 in factory production
how long do you think the D40 will be in production?
s1e2a3n4 4 years ago
.. how the pros and cons will affect the shooting in real life situations.

Especially the "compared-to" talk and ..

this is a great review! I just ordered the camera now I'm excited to try out some of these features!

Thanks clear9! I should also add to Jack that the Panasonic FZ8 also falls into his budget and offers plenty of manual control. Otherwise the Nikon D40 is the cheapest modern DSLR...
cameralabs 4 years ago
Thanks Very much for this Gordon!
For the next review is tehre any chance of reviewing something like a Fuji S9500 Zoom?
Cheers mate,
Jack
MysteryArtMan 4 years ago
Hi Jack, glad you like the review! The S9500 is a couple of years old now, so we won't be doing a video of that one I'm afraid, but we do have a full review of it on the Cameralabs website. If you like superzooms, check out our Olympus SP-550UZ video and look out for ones on the Sony H9 and Panasonic FZ8 soon!
cameralabs 4 years ago
Thankyou for the quick review - the reason I asked for the 9500 review is because I am looking into getting a new camera. I'm currently using a Fuji S304, which is okay. But as i'm progressing along I could use a good camera that I can grow into. I've seen the 9500 around and read alot of good reviews.
I've been looking at the Canon DSLR range, such as the 300D/350D. But they're just a little too expensive.
Any ideas for a budget near £200? Thanks!
MysteryArtMan 4 years ago
A budget of 200 UK pounds limits you to a compact, but models like the Canon PowerShot A640 give you lots of controls. If you're willing to sacrifice manual control for a long zoom and bigger screen, then the Panasonic TZ3 is neat. See our reviews and Best Buys section on the Cameralabs website. Cheers!
