However, though it may be a valid and true question that she is asking of God, we must know that we cannot lay the blame on God for taking a life. Job 34:10 states that God does nothing cruel or unjustly. Rev 12:9 tells us that the devil is misleading the whole earth. Therefore, Rom 5:12 which in harmony tells as that because the devil misleads us, and death is a result of sin - God does not cause death. The voice is indeed soothing - still we must not condemn God unjustly
To fully understand this woman, you have to read the novels the musical is based on. She is a fairly uneducated, poor peasant woman who has been brainwashed by a strict Lutheran supremacy. She has been taught to work hard, and have faith in God with Luther's Catechism as the main guideline.Although she lived a godly life she suffered tragedies.
Her daughter dies, she is forced to leave her home and her parents, she undergoes several miscarriages that makes a normal life with herhusband impossible. She never settles in her new country. No wonder that she doubts her faith and the existence of God.
@fingal61 This synopsis I can fully understand. I acknowledge this fact. However, just as we can understand her plight, can we not also understand that we must not ascribe anything evil to God? Far be it from Jehovah God to act wickedly. This song is beautifully sung. Many persons I know personally has suffered ilks similar to her own.
@DgreeCelcius It's not my intention to start a debate about religion. I'm an atheist myself, but I have full and deep respect for those who have an honest belief and turns to whatever god they see fit. However, this song isn't so much about blaming God, but rather to doubting the strength of her own faith, and given her background, that's pretty much all that she builds her life around.
@fingal61 Honestly, I am not saying I do not understand her position. In fact the piece is a very touching one, very in line with realities and I appreciate that you were able to highlight that in depth. Still, God does not cause persons to die. Misunderstanding this woman and misjudging God, which one of these will not ensure that you defend both truths? I understand her, but I have come to know about God and knows He wants everyone to live forever, He does not want anyone to die. John 17:3
I have the CD of this show now. The more you listen to the music the more it grows on you. Like all of Benny and Bjorns tunes you find them going round and round in your head. Love it.
Saw this at RAH last night......Helen gave an amazing performance of this song and it was justifiably received with a spontaneous standing ovation. Did anyone else see this? Great stuff.
Yep I was there sitting in one of the boxes. Gazing down transfixed by this amazing performance. To my mind she has the voice a bit like a cross between Agnetha and a bit of Julie Andrews thrown in their.
Wonderful night..I saw Paul McCartneys classical concert at the RAH, and it didn't hold a candle to last night. Benny and Bjorn just keep getting better and better.
the swedish version is SO much better, but this is good, too. (yes, I'm swedish). It is very true to the original, very impressive - a lot of songs translated from swedish tend to forget the message because they're so focused on the words. This one is true to what she (kristina) wants to say, not just her words. :) Brilliant.
It's based on four novels by swedish author Vilhelm Moberg (first one called "The Imigrants") about swedish pesants leaving a poverty and starvation stricken Sweden in the 1840's to find a better life in America. The story is centered around Kristina and her husband Karl-Oskar, taking the boat across the Atlantic to settle in Minnesota. This particular song is towards the end of the musical, when Kristina is beginning to doubt the God that has guided her through life thus far.
Helene sjöholm is one off the best female musical singers there is and this is one off her best songs. And she is even better live so if you have the chance to see her take it. I cant understand why she havent got more leading parts in musicals, the only reason I can see is that she is occupied touring with BAO. Johan.
I haven't heard the Swedish version.........I have been looking for a recording of Kristina for a long time, it seems the Albert Hall event is to advertise the release of an album. Love this song, first time I have heard anything from the show, thank you for posting.
This is very good, but I think the Swedish version is even better. :) But of course, in som way Helen always manage to sing fantastic, no matter what. :)
On of the absolute best song that can move a person depp and bring out strong felling, Love the song in swedish and the english version is almost as good! GREAT!
This musical (Kristina from Duvemåla) and the movies "Utvandrarna" (The Emigrants) and "Nybyggarna" (The Settlers) makes me a proud swed. Please see it. This is how good it can get, ever.
This has to be one of the most moving and powerful pieces of music I have ever heard!! I have loved it in Swedish by Helen Sjöholm since the original cast CD from Sweden came out in the 1990s. To hear her sing it in English really sends chills up and down my spine... in a GOOD way!
Well! Well! The World... Let me now hear you.. Sweden really really knows how to make music that caresses the heart and soul of the humans. Am i not right?! Benny And Björn we in Sweden praises our creator for he brought you two to our country.. God Bless and thanx a lot for the beutiful translation of "Du Måste Finnas" Really Much........

Swedes should be so proud that Andersson is one. He has to be one of the greatest composers of the past hundred years.
