liston could have been anywhere from 32 to 40 in first clay fight,,,take note,,liston fought all his fights except one,,,at weights 202 to 213 ,,a highly conditioned athlete fights at peak weight,,,,,its proof sonny either grew old in the ring or was just not in shape or prepared for cassius running style,,,sonny weighted 218 for first clay fight,,,,,,,,reminds me of joe frazier whipping ali at 202 but fell short 3/4 years later at 209 and 221,,,,,,in boxing conditioning is 80 per cent, skill 20
Intriguing look at the early Liston. Long arms were key to his style of course (only mega-tall guys like Lewis and Carnera had longer reaches), and you can see the beginings of the famous jab in that ponderous-looking boom of a steadying left.
One or two comments below imply he took a dive against Ali. I don't believe this. Liston had all the ability and prowess. What he lacked was heart. He was essentially a ring bully who couldn't handle it when someone fought back. Witness Leotis Martin.
Liston took a dive to clay. Clay couldnt floor cooper yet dropped liston . Liston could have been champ for a long time had he not have lost(took a dive) to ali
sonnys arm reach,,84 inches is evident in this clip,,also his musculature is very different from first clay fight,,,his body looks more toned and dense,,,,by the time 64 rolled around sonny was pushing 40

No wonder Patterson wasn't too anxious to get into the ring with him!
Liston is my all-time favourite boxer.

When he was young, in condition, and motivated to work his way up the ladder to become a champion, Sonny was just an awesome fighter.

no doubt about that... if it wasnt for Clay/Ali he would reign a long time
