@KINGNIARE It's not that Ildebrando D'Arcangelo would NEED a horse. He was set upon it by the stage director.
Bastianini is a baritone of former days. He was good in my opinion too.
But D'Arcangelo (a bass-baritone, by the way) is an absolute top notch singer in every way. You can't argue about taste, but anything that is "measurable" in singing - D'Arcangelo delivers it with perfect mastery. There's no room for critics; only for matter of personal taste. I very deeply respect him.
He looks like vladimir galouzine here...A good bass baritone voice...and one just has to love an oldschool production where Escamillo enters on a HORSE:D
I finally understood why there used to be just fat people singing opera! It wasn´t necessarily because they were better singers but it was to keep the audience focused on the music!!! D'arcangelo is such a gorgeous man I bearly heard Bizet score at all!!! (This is meant as joke...)
oh! there's an actual horse on stage! i've already see this video twice and didn't noticed before XD hahahahaha i was only paying attention to this smoking hot Escamillo :D
Escamillo has to be among the cushiest baritone roles there is. You get the opera's most famous aria, but only have to actually sing for, what, 15 minutes in the whole opera? And you still get great applause for your bow (as long as you sang Toreador sufficiently, which isn't exactly the most technically demanding piece). Bizet was good to the baritone. :)
I checked out Raimondi and Tezier as recommended. I did notice that D'Arcangelo's French has a little Italian accent. It doesn't seem bad enough to detract from the performance. I did not notice sharpness in his lower notes, but in an age of studios fixing every flaw, slight human imperfections let you know you're hearing a live performance. Bottom line, D'Arcangelo's voice is fantastic and the others lack presence compared to him on the stage. Masculinity counts in this role!
Elegance is primordial in this role. It is not a shouting contest as many baritones seem to think. In the quest for ever darker and bigger voices elegance is the first victim. D'Arcangelo ignores almost every indication the composer made in the score and he's certainly not the only one to do this. I find this a pity, because he does have a beautiful voice.
Oh, dear, you speak like a vocal musician and I am just a french horn player. We need elegance as well but have been known to be tempted to love loudness at times. I can't help loving D'Arcangelo's voice, I just love it.
It's nice that we agree on the beauty of D'Arcangelo's voice. And I'm sure as a fellow musician that you agree that the composer's instructions should be followed as much as possible.
Hm. I don't really like his Escamillo. Somehow out of tune... I think... but the staging is cool. His entrance with the horse... unexpected! The high note at 0:55 is very weak. Not loud and strong, as I would have it expected to be... and his french accent is not very accurate, as far as I can tell. Certainly a good singer, but not a good Escamillo.
I quite agree with you. Curiously enough, the low notes are out of tune (toot high) and his french sounds very italian to my franch ear.Escamillo is difficult to cast : too high for basses too low for Verdi Baritones. The right voices is... the french baritone : Robert Massard, Ernest Blanc, Gabriel Bacquier or today Ludovic Tezier or Marc Barrard. They're all on You Tube in this aria. Listen to them.
I will listen to them soon, but until I haven't heard them, I believe Ruggero Raimondi to be my favourite Escamillo and also my favourite bass-baritone. I very much like his interpretation of Escamillo, you should certainly listen to him singing this aria if you haven't heard it already. He is a very talented singer with a beautiful voice.
he was handsome, masculine, can jump up and down.... audience like him
his singing was nice in general, but a little bit unstable on pitch. The stars last night was still Carmen and Don Jose, which is reasonable. He didn't steal the performance.
D'Arcangelo definitely rocks! Even more than usual. In my humble opinion... Bryan Terfel is a great baritone too, but acting and physical presence are not even to be compared to Ildebrando's ones!
Carmen is done so often because its so hard to not make a positive impression and it's so easy to cast. Escamillo is an good example. Its hard to find Verdi baritones withgood sustained high Gs. But the toreador only has a single brief G. Basses have always sung it.
It is a sure fire hit on stage especially if the singer has a commanding stage presence.
d'Arcangelo looks, moves and sings great. The sound recording could be better however.
The aria only goes to a F but there is a brief G later.
I used to sing Zuniga a lot. The first time I did it, the baritone - a guy named Karl - use to come up to me back stage at every performance and ask me if his high G was OK.
I lied of course. If his G had been any good he wouldn't have worried so much.
Ok.. Bari-basso. Ha un timbro bellissimo ed un'estensione molto ampia con note gravi belle piene.Le migliori interpretazioni di Escamillo sono sempre state fatte da baritoni con queste caratteristiche.
this is NOT the right role for him at ALL! he is so heavy, i feel like he is going to die while singing this. its all so pressed and pushed, these high notes should not be so hard for him he is a bass baritone, all the high notes are pushed there is not flexibility. i feel like it is all being attacked....not a good choice. he almost sounds like he is getting a wobble during some of his low notes and the part when he is "aaaaaaah...toreador..." not a good choice, its too heavy.
I really agree with you.And I'd say in his low notes his voice doesn't seem to carry. It's harsh for him to sing that. It's too rude, and the interpretation is not that good. Here he isn't as good as in other pieces I've listened.
This is not an opinion, but isn't this a bass-baritone role? Maybe its not a huge strain on the reach of a baritone, but the lower notes dominated by bass-baritones are definitely in a weaker part of the baritone's range.
Escamillo is frequently done by bass-baritones and well-trained basses... The aria especially is often done by basses with a good upper range... The duet in Act III is a little trickier for basses, but some can still manage it...
D'Arcangelo moves well in this performance, but I'd say his singing is just OK... He sounds like he wasn't warmed up... middle and low voice was very shaky and pressured... the high Fs were mostly good though...
This is the best Escamillo I've seen so far. In my oppinion, in this song not only the voice is important, but the scenario. He looks really like a Spanish "torero"; he acts, dance... everything matches. Awesome!
He sings like an angel He looks like a real stallion what more can a singer have!!!!! Bravo Maestro and thank you for your divine voice !!!! CAn anyone come anywhere closer to Ildebranbo ????
Um.... What else can a singer have? He can warm up for his entrance aria, so that his middle and low voice isn't wobbly and unfocused.... He can also work on making the French sound... well, French. No matter how hot and "authentic" he looks, we still want to HEAR the Toreador Song actually SUNG... not barked, woofed or hollered.
Ildebrando has an amazingly consistent top, great stage presence, and a commitment to delivering the meaning of what he sings. Absolutely great singer. I wish him continued success. I remember when he made his debut with Opera Rara. I was in Milan some time afterwards and met some people at the G. Verdi Conservatory who knew him when he was a student there.
Saludos!
