Cunt was first used in a wholly patriarchical society, in a 'reality' where (as said at 1:22) female sexual energy was identified as a dangerous force (therefore 'cunt' would obviously be used in the negative.)
But societies evolve and so does the language/meanings used in such societies. 'Cunt' no longer means vagina to anyone who uses it imo. It has been kept as a term of derision, but it has lost any direct connotation to female sexual energy. It just means cunt. Yunno, like cunting bollox.
@CatewithouttheE alrighty. so now the question is, why does greer not promote the use of "vulva" instead? why does she favour a word like "cunt", which makes a woman's genitals sound dirty and disease-infested? i do not like to think of a woman's organs like that.
@CatewithouttheE wrong. the inner lips are called the labia minora. "vulva" refers to the whole external organ.
what is it with you feminists and your awful knowledge of biology? germaine greer demonstrates poor knowledge in "the female eunuch", when she writes that humans have 23 pairs of autosomes (wrong). ive seen feminists deny the health benefits of breast-feeding, and ive even heard of one feminist who doesn't believe in DNA. and YOU dont even know the names for your organs? what a joke.
by the way, if this is the type of garbage that women in "women's studies" faculties waste their time on, then we need to cut all money to those departments immediately. "women's studies" is a farce, and has contributed nothing to civilisation. all money needs to be directed to science and medicine instead- something that will actually benefit people.
greer is out of touch with planet earth. it's not considered a vulgar word because it's "powerful" (what's with her obsession with power anyway?) it is a vulgar word simply because it is a vulgar word. vulgar words are vulgar and that's that.
i do not like to think of a woman's body as vulgar or dirty, which is why i don't like to use a dirty word like "cunt". a woman's genitals are a thing of sweetness and beauty, so i quite like "vulva"- why can't greer just use "vulva" like everyone else?
@bucketofjoe i think you completely missed the point of my comment. i wasn't saying that it doesn't sound "powerful", i was saying that this has nothing to do with it being considered a vulgar word. vulgar words are vulgar simply because they are.
what is the feminist obsession with power anyway? there are only two types of people obsessed with power- children, and dictators. if you aspire to be either of those, then you should kill yourself.
cool. and i guess i should start talking about my "cock" during consultations with a doctor. especially a female one. if the malice is to be taken out of "cunt", let's take it out of "cock" too.
why do people - mainly men - use the word 'cunt' to mean the lowest most despicable type of human being? to call someone a 'cunt' is the worst kind of possible insult ... why?
Wow! whenever I listen to her, I get to know some new things that I haven't thought of it before. Those 'nasty'! things that aren't common to think of because of the power that she says! wow! she is a thinker!!
I would have liked to know more about Greer's personal decision to stop normalizing 'cunt'. I understand that this way, it holds more power this way, but I'd like to understand the thought process that lead to the conclusion that this would be a good thing, etc. etc.
I think the word cunt has become so offensive because it uses a term for female genitalia in a derogative way and this is both embarrassing and distasteful. The curt and sharp monosyllabic make-up of the word means it packs a punch and is almost violent. The actual phonetic sound of the word is more offensive because it is hard. I don't think anyone is offended by the content, you could call someone a 'gash', 'snatch', etc. and it would be funny. I don't think it's a feminist issue as such.
@lioxoda Gash is more offensive to me, and makes me want to make a gash on the person using it (I would never do, that's hyperbole!) I refer to other women's genitalia as cunts in my diary, So you know, personal choice...
@255ad I think you are a salivating lesbo who analyses the so called works of feminist 'literature' and spews out the typical vomit of the lesbo cult. Shove a cork in yer twat dyke.

@EdNortonisMineLol bullshit you moron. look around you. the degeneration of society as you know it is caused by feminazism. Feminism is radical. there is no equality to strive for stop whining and shove a cork in your collective pussies. Feminism = death to civil society. @WonderWoman200290 it's a brilliant word if you have a burning -hatred for the female genitalia and want to make a woman's lady-parts sound dirty and disease-infested, yes. however, if you love female genitalia, and you are a normal, civilised, human being who doesn't use excessive foul language, then you will use a more moderate, softer word, such as "vulva".
@33LB oh boohoo. it doesn't make it sound dirty at all. it really depends what spirit you are saying it in. if you are feeling all soft and fluffy you can say vulva, which i agree is a lovely word. if you want something more powerful, dynamic and passionate that expresses active sexual energy then say cunt. there are many poetic uses of this wonderful word, for example "i like fucking you with my cunt. if you don't like it you can fuck off, you cunt."
@WonderWoman200290 it DOES sound dirty. its the type of word you would hear in those really bad pornos, along with other foul words such as "cock", "fuck", and the fake heavy breathing. i feel a bit sick when i hear the word "cunt" because its so filthy (which is more or less what greer said, wasnt it?)- i do not want to associate feeling sick with the beauty of a womans organs.
your example is not poetic- it sounds like something an ignoramus with a poor vocabulary would say
@33LB cock is good. cunt is good. fucking is good. hell, heavy breathing is sometimes called for when one is having a particularly good fuck - but i doubt you would understand what a good fuck is because you're probably too busy "making love" to some "beautiful lady parts". I have a rather large vocabulary thank you very much. I am very fond of my vocabulary because its a dirty, sweaty, sexy vocabulary that has way more fun than your whinging wet-blanket milksop of a vocabulary ever will.
@WonderWoman200290 vulgar people use vulgar words, and i wouldn't want to have sex with a vulgar or dirty person. i like people who are sweet and nice, not vulgar people who use upsetting, offensive words. i use those offensive words to express my anger, but having sex is supposed to be a loving, intimate experience- not an angry or vulgar experience.
heavy breathing is never called for. i dont breathe heavily when having an orgasm, so i dont see why anyone else would.
@33LB I strongly dislike the way you are putting moral value on people's sexual preferences. sex is not "supposed" to be anything. who is doing this "supposing"? i feel sorry for you that you are too sensually stunted to appreciate the beauty in such things as anger or vulgarity. enjoy your dull pleasant world where everyone has dull pleasant sex and nobody breathes. i hope your sweet, nice, insipid existence is never again disturbed by the erotic mores of upsetting, unsavoury persons.
@WonderWoman200290 what are you talking about? vulgarity is not sensual, and there is no beauty in vulgarity by its very definition. and vulgarity is not erotic either.

@WonderWoman200290 oh i see. so a polite term such as "lady parts" is degrading, whereas a word which implies filth and disease-infestation such as "cunt" is perfectly fine? good one. maybe your bizarre friends who graduated in nancy pancy arts degrees like the word "cunt" because they think it makes them clever and original, but normal, sensible, nice people use sensible words and sensible terms.
@WonderWoman200290 seems to me that your desire to use a filthy word like "cunt" is linked to your desire for filthy men. just because you like filthy men doesn't mean that filthy men like you if you're filthy. trust me, men do not like filthy women. we like kinky ones, but filthy is a no-no.
@WonderWoman200290 and btw, why are women like you so childish that you seek out so-called "powerful" words? why are you so obsessed with power? only children like the idea of "power". sensible, nice adults seek out concepts like team-work, not "power".
@33LB why are you so scared of power? sex is a powerful thing. and yes, I like my men filthy and they like me. you know nothing about my friends, what a stupid irrelevant thing to say. oh and sorry but you and your hand doesn't count as a team.
@WonderWoman200290 a desire for power is both selfish and childish. sure, you and your feminist friends may want to become more and more powerful, like kim jong il who had complete control over his nation- the only problem is, no one will like you.
men do not like filthy, disease-infested women. they have to be clean- but note that this does not mean being a prude. women are often confused between the two.
@WonderWoman200290 "sex is a powerful thing."? what is this garbage-talk? is this the type of rubbish which you're trained to write in women's studies classes? sex is just a means of procreation, there is nothing "powerful" about it.
sex is just an intimate bond between two people. all of this feminist talk of "power", "control", "domination", "liberation" in the context of sex is nothing more than brainless, pseudo-intellectual nonsense.
@33LB it is not how i have been trained to speak in any class. it is how i feel about it. it's not power in terms of hierarchy and subjugation, it is power in terms of energy, passion, heat and life.
@WonderWoman200290 "powerful" refers to things like atomic missiles, large mammals, and computers, not the act of two monkeys rubbing their genitals together.
the feeling you experience when having sex is not "power", it's just tiny neurotransmitters bouncing around in your brain, producing a sensation of pleasure. stop being arty-farty, it's not clever (and neither is feminism in general).
@33LB I resent your need to pigeonhole me as some pretentious women's studies student or something. I am not a student. neither am i a feminist. I AM a creative person but i don't see that as diminishing my intelligence. I speak honestly from the heart, not from a desire to sound "arty". I don't have to accept your definition of power, i have my own. if sex is as mundane and simple as you suggest then i don't see why you were getting so prissy and precious about it to begin with.
@WonderWoman200290 the scientific definition of "power" is the only correct definition, because it's the only useful definition. the feminist talk of "power" is garbage and empty-thinking.
i do not think sex is mundane and simple. i just don't believe in dressing it up with silly, meaningless terms. honestly, applying the word "power" to sex reminds me of those psychics who talk about "energy" without really knowing what it means.
@33LB If I can't say sex is powerful, then you can't say it is "an intimate bond between two people". that is just as much of a leap from two monkeys rubbing their genitals together as my idea of sex is.
@saosinic00 oh, i use my bad language too. but there is a time and a place for it. it doesn't belong in sex because i don't like dirty girls with dirty cunts. i like clean women with soft vulvas.
I would argue that in many parts of Western society, there are no truly shocking words. Even c**t is unsurprising in many parts of Australia and Great Britain. The effect depends on the usage and the manner in which the word is said.
'There's something not right with my cunt.'
