Thanks for the info. I'm actually in the position of buying a net book and wasn't sure if the usual processor on netbooks could handle ms office 2007. I just need it for work on excel 07 and chat.
Hey...thanks for your quick reply! I did find a mini in the Dell outlet center with 2 gigs of ram running on UBUNTU. I also checked and Nero and Audacity both run on UBUNTU. I went ahead and went for it. It's not going to be my primary computer, so I really will only use it for internet and my slide shows. Hopefully it will work! Thanks for your imput...I appreciate you taking the time. Have a great day!
I am thinking about getting one of these, but I'm not sure it will do what I need it to do. I record voice overs using a USB devise with the software Audacity and I then use Nero to put together slide shows. These are very short(2-3 min.) slide shows. I can do the picture modifications on my main PC. I also was thinking about getting an external hard drive to help with what I do. Let me know what you think.
i am going to get the dell inspiron mini 9windows xp for chritmas and was wondering can u store alot of music, videos and pics on it?? and can u install windows live messenger and other programes??
first, you need to figure out what size HD you have, if you have the 4gb model, forget about it
second, you need to somehow get the dell mini 9 xp OEM disc (like all software, there is a legal way and an illegal way to do this). you can also just use a standard XP install, but then you have to fish for drivers.
third, get an external cd drive and do a standard reinstall on a partition (be warned, setting up partitions in ubuntu is a serious headache).
great video dude nobody has videos of mini running xp. 3 questions how do you create custom themes?? and also did you buy 1gb of 533MHz ram and was it easy to install?? thanks 5 stars
heard of anyone running "go to my pc" or "logmein" from the mini? hoping to get the mini and remote in to my office machine to run apps, outlook, quickbooks and access files. total deal maker/breaker... thanks!
i dont know anything about that remote admin stuff. but from just a muscle standpoint, the atom is about as strong as an early pentium 4. so you will probably be ok.
and keep in mind you can always run that stuff locally
nice laptop man i got the inspiron 1525 it's more of a school laptop and it has 250g hard drive and 3g of ram it's very nice I'm a total Dell supporter and anyone thinking of buying one you should.
do you think the mini9's has good wifi range? I think im going to get one for my brother, but I need to make sure that the wifi is good on it because our router is far away:p
with the 2 gig ram update, running office + firefox is no problem at all
i have played around with many netbooks, the dell mini 9 has excellent build quality. it is way way way nicer than a eeepc. it is on par with the acer aspire one (but the mini 9 is noticeably smaller). However the hp mini-note 2133 is the cadillac of all netbooks, but it is pricey and much bigger.
remember dell is a huge company, they make machines for all kinds of users, some want cheap some want quality
What is your configuration to be able to run Office '07? I cancelled my order when I spoke to a Dell rep who said it would not run Office. My order included 16 gig SSD and 1 gig RAM.
i agree regarding the external hd. the dell rep said the 16 gig would not be enough to run ms office. do they really know what they are talking about? after getting your info i wish i had not cancelled my order. the discount on the mini 9 ended last night...
hmm well mine wasn't suppose to ship till nov 5 and it already says shipped and it should be here in 4 days O.O I wasnt expecting it till after nov =]
What is the OS skin you have? It looks like vista. Is it free?
good vid

upgrading RAM for the mini 9 is the same process as for any other laptop (i.e. it is very easy)

hey what theme is that?. hopefully dell will give us a proper graphics card video driver soon that lets users with 2gb allocate some more to video.

may i ask what is it you are trying to do that requires more video muscle?

i havent really "tested" the wifi
but my crappy verizon router is in my basement, and the mini 9 runs fine even in my loft (4th floor)
evilbillcosby 3 years ago
hey is this windowz xp with ubuntu? how do you add both together
smemon12 3 years ago
this has a kinda small HD to set up a dual boot option
if i were going to do it, i'd buy the xp version and pull the ubuntu boot disk down from "elsewhere"
i know you can set up a dual option on the eee pc's
but as my failed attempt to mount a SDHC card has a hard drive proves, the dell mini 9 is different
best of luck

Hey dude...may i ask what it is you have plugged into the side?
x
1382713827 3 years ago
that is just my old mouse receiver usb plug
sorry, i should have mentioned that in the info section.
evilbillcosby 3 years ago
Thanks...i was just worrying if you'd added some extra stuff, as you seem very computer litterate, and would know.
The only thing i want to upgrade is the SSD and RAM :L lol
Would you reccomend this for microsoft office, msn, and firefox running at once?
It's for studies and socialising :L
Also, how long does it look like it's going to last? Because some dells are crap!
:L
Thanks!

mike92677 3 years ago
16 gig with a 2 gig ram upgrade
i am sorry about the bad info,
this thing runs office like a champ.
even really insane multi-sheet vlookups from hell
evilbillcosby 3 years ago
So the 16 gigs is enough or do you use an external drive?
mike92677 3 years ago
8 gigs is the bare minimum, imo
(system install and a few small apps)
16 gigs is plenty for a machine like this
currently i am trying to figure out how to mount a 16gig SDHC card as a hard drive using a hacked hitachi microdrive driver, but i am failing
either way, you can format a SDHC card for NTFS and install apps there with no problems other than slightly slower read times, i believe
i think carrying around an external drive kind of defeats the purpose of this machine
evilbillcosby 3 years ago

trevx99 3 years ago
if you ordered from dell, I hope yours does show up on time
dell delayed mine 3 times in a row with no explanation, finally i canceled and bought this on ebay
it ended up being about the same price but with 2 gigs of RAM, also it was on my doorstep in 2 days
either way, best of luck
