As always, an awesome video. (Love the John Williams) Why do I keep finding setting recommendations for the t2i saying not to bump the sharpness up? Is sharpness taken care of in post?
Wow awesome Luke ! I have just found you by chance today and have watched about 20 of your videos now :) Great advice and great tips and also you made me go buy a Canon 550D :) love this Christmas video not seen anyone use the home alone theme tune , lovely set video.... you seem to get the best out of the Canon 550D unlike some others .. Well im going to play around with my new toy today and will be hoping to make my own movies very very soon watch this space and all because of you :)
@Earz62801 I have been looking but haven't found anything that has to do with the direct correlation between the hot pixels and Q Scale, I mean it makes sense...I just want to know how to avoid it while shooting at -16 some :)
@Dod3032 Getting hot, stuck or dead pixels is caused by heat, and the length of a shot. My First t2i was killed two days after the Firmware released. Why? Because I shot in -16 Qscale for about 2 minutes straight. I had about 9 or 10 white pixels all over any video after that one. You need to keep the length of your shots at a minimal. For Instance..let's say you shot normally, canon's firmware for 10 minutes straight..you will increase the risk of a hot, stuck, or dead pixel.
Ok Luke..go for it. But Trust me..you're gonna get pissed when you start going through T2i's like crazy. HAHA. I'd wait for the Official Magic Lantern Release. But you wanna go -16 Qscale as I did, try not to record longer than 30 seconds or you WILL cause havoc to your pixels.
@Earz62801 Really?! My memory card doesn't allow me to shoot anything over like 2 seconds, but I was planning on getting a 500x, 100Mb/s card so I could make some video at -16...wouldn't the cameras overheat function kick in?
@Earz62801 Any suggestions for a short film that will all be shot at -16? Keep it to 10 second shots? Any way we can monitor it to make sure no damage is done?
@Dod3032 the 100mb/s card will in fact help with the data and the speed that it's written to the card. It will not help with the heat when you're pushing the quality to it's limits. Once the pixels start to go nuts you will first see tiny red pixels show up, then they will turn white. Then Canon will tell you that you recorded for an extended period of time. As for monitoring the heat..I'm sure the Offical Magic Lantern firmware will have at least a bit rate monitor.
@Dod3032 Luke, please try not to go -16 Qscale. What will end up happening is..you will get a white hot pixel..even in low light shots it will be noticeable as well. Stop what you're doing lol..and don't go past -13 Qscale which equals 36mb/s. -16 pushes the camera to its limits causing it to overheat and creating hot pixels or even dead pixels. -16 Qscale= 62mb/s when the camera should only be doing 45-50mb.
you should do a video on your magic lantern settings for this. and if you ever find a way to playback audio on the camera with magic lantern please let me know :)
@breadsunbeam Ha ha, yes. On a more technical side, 0:10, 0:13, and 0:24 were at -16 QScale...and I can really see the difference when it's in the middle of these other shots...maybe I'm just looking for it but it stands out to me here.
@Dod3032 okay, so now that I got the magic lantern firmware up and working, I tried playing around with the QScale settings, and as far as I understand, the lower the value, the higher the bitrate (correct me if I'm wrong). One thing that doesn't work for me is that even though I'm using a 16gb class 10 SDHC card, the video still automatically shuts down out of nowhere...could you please explain why that happens, and when are the best times to use the QScale functions? THank you!
@TwoPlusFourIsSe7en Yeah mine does that too, when I shoot at -16 I am only able to record a couple of seconds.
It does this because the camera is recording at such high data rates and the memory card can't keep up. I am looking into purchasing a 500x 100Mb/s memory card and shoot an entire short at -16.
@Dod3032 Dave, which card is that 500x? XSDHC? I could make some pretty decent shots at -16 using my class 10 sdhc (Transcend), but would love to make more without worryng about buffer or the camera shutting itself down. Thanks for your video and happy new year!
@Dod3032 I'll try to find it. And I'm really sorry for calling you Dave, Luke, I think I was watching too many videos and just thought it was Dave Dugdale's channel :-)
@Dod3032 Thanks! I really had no idea where I could find to buy. Here in Brazil we can hardly see people doing video edits made as well as your edits. Just recently I watch your videos .. I signed up and continue watching the videos.
I look forward to buying my T2i. Here in Brazil is very expensive! ! TAXES, TAXES, AND MORE TAXES!
I'm sorry if my English is a little weird .. I do not speak English very well lol
this is the type of quality i aspire to shoot on all my videos, unfortunately i have a REALLY long way to go yet. I like that it's all really sharp and colorful yet still warm and inviting, it's the kind of thing that keeps me personally hanging on wanting more the whole way to the end. VERY nicely done.
Where do you find your music, via a free library of non copyright music?, or do you somehow get the individual artists permission? there's so much music I want to use, so be cool to know. Thanks:)
@richardneale1 getting individual artists permission even on camera doesn't help when the you tube filters kick in, you may have to prove that you have the permission to use it by the filter flagging your videos first, that's what i ran into with my friend's band from the group "rehab" when i posted some of thier music on a wedding photo video i did for my neighbor
how do you get the quality to stay the same when you upload it to youtube??? because all my T2i footage downgrades quality as soon as its uploaded to youtube :(
@hector252 noticed that too, i did a colors of fall video and everything was really bright and colorful in the pictures but it lost a lot of depth and color when i uploaded it here. i found that making sure i converted it to MP4 30 fps before uploading helped with another video i did but supposedly now Youtube will let you upload 60fps 1080P and it supposedly not lose anything, haven't tried that one yet personally though
dude. any tips on how to avoid the VIDEO IS AUTOMATICALLY SHUT DOWN. on the t2i? and how many t2i's do you have? you rock!!! merry christmas to you and your family.
@evzeeland I was just thinking of that and trying to remember...I think I knew all along that I wasn't going to color correct so it was probably Standard.
@TheFilmProducers personally i am really starting to hate the limitations of the 18-55mm lens that came with the T2i most of it is that i haven't figured out how to use it properly but the other side of it is i see all this really nice video with the 50mm prime lens and the 55-250 lenses that come standard on the 7D i am almost starting to wish i had spent the extra $800.00 to get the 7D now but this T2i has a lot of potential, i just have to get a little more familliar with how things work
Really great work. These videos bring hope to us beginners. Thanks!
By the way, what format do you render the final video in? There are so many options in Vegas 10. Thanks in advance!

@Earz62801 Ha ha, if it can be pushed I will push it. Why only get half of the data when we can have all of it?
I noticed that the shots I got at -16 looked great. It can, and should be pushed.
