As most ads have to, I always feel this one completely timestamps a period in 80's culture: the Chanel suit, a fur coat (very politically incorrect these days), the Princess Diana styling - this is a classic ad. Superb.
There was another version of this ad - a very similar one was used in Canada for the Golf II - except that in the Canadian ad she gets into the opposite side of the Golf (RHD), and the licence plate is the standard North American shape, and white and blue (the most common colours for a Canadian plate). The similarity to Princess Di drew such protests from the Monarchist League that VW of Canada withdrew the ad.
I still have my very early (August 1984) Mk 2 GTi - I wouldn't ever sell it, because it is the best car I have ever owned or probably ever will. I have got newer ones, but none of them beat the Mk 2. Mine has 240000 miles on it and has 90% original paint. It has also never, ever broken down and has almost all the original mechanical parts (it has had 1 wheel bearing replaced. It is worth nothing but no amount of money would buy me a better car. So why would I sell it? Mk 2s rock!
I remember reading at the time, a woman who was getting married phoned volkswagen asking them for the fur coat as she wanted to get married in it, which they gave to her. all good publicity.
Only one person dislikes this video, the animal whom that coats fur used to belong to.

This song is such a rip-off of the old hymn "What a friend we have in Jesus". The melody is exactly the same. The hymn was written in the 1800s.

They like to laugh and gather around in cliques and poke fun at other MP's in parliament, I'm sooooo glad my taxes pay for that shit.

So the woman didn't have enough pride to give back all his gifts... Cheappo... decided to keep the car for her egoistic self...
of course... she wasn't going to walk in her high heals... What a cheap female.
