I have a HP Pavillion DV1000. Since last 2 days, it is giving me starting problem. When it does not start, then i remove the battery out and then put it again, repeat this process several times and sometimes that works.
The only issue is laptop does not start by pressing the 'on' button the first time.
Once the laptop starts, then it will not shut down till i give shut down command.
I am very happy to see the vidoe from you, hopefully the others also are happy for You Generally people reflowed the solder under the nvidia GPU with various heat sources. I liked the solution presented in this video:

For how long did you burn this on the GPU? I had the same problem with my HP laptop, searched for it and used the gas-burner method, which I regret now since I seem to have made things too hot :(
My Video card went dead - Googled " dead video card". One guy suggested to put it in a pre heated oven of 180 celcius for 8 minutes. having learning electronics I was nt shure its real or a joke but thought what the hell.lets give it a try and OOPS placing it back in the comp and...its works! The reason to the malfuctioning of the nvidia GT8600 was too much dust in the heat sink that prevented air flow -what a result caused over heating of the board wich made one of the soldered points go loose.
@swimmertromboner I wasn't sure how much to use either, so I just generously filled the tea candle holder. But be sure you don't add so much that it could spill and spread the fire. Also, you might want to look at some other videos that use alternative heat sources like hair dryers, heat lamps, and hot hair guns. I somewhat doubt the effectiveness of the burning alcohol.
@taokilo It worked great and it probably would continue to work, but one of the comments on this video (slicklex2000) pointed out a change to the original nvidia recall that made my model eligible. I have since sent in the tx1000 and got an EeePC tablet as a replacement.
guys i had same problem in my pavilion tx 1000, black screen with all lights on, for me it ws ram problem, i had 2 ram, one is 512 mb and another one is 1 gb, when i get this kind of black screen problem and removed my 1 gb ram i tried boot, it works perfectly with 512 mb ram, so i tried my that 1 gb ram in another lpatop, but its doesnt work in another laptop, so finally i came to know its problem with ram....
Pennies are not smooth enough to provide a good thermal interface. They are also not copper anymore (coated zinc) and are actually quite poor heat sinks.
@mickrussom Get pennies from before 1983 (you will find them all around, i found two in my pocket). They changed from 95% cooper to 95$ zinc in that year. Both canadian and american pennies were changed in the same date. Also, use sand paper to make the penny smooth. Takes time but is worth it.
@mickrussom That's why you should a penny that was made before 1980. You can also sand it down if you'd like to get better contact but I do not believe that is necessary if you use thermal paste.
He posts all these comments up to disinform and probably uses these same methods! He (Rob of Precision Division FRAUD) claims to have all this high tech equipment blah blah, hes full of SHIT. Hes just some guy stealing mobos online and selling them on Ebay!! Probably uses these tricks to fix em then sells them as "refurbished". PEOPLE, USE YOUR HEAD. TO ALL THOSE WHO SEE ADS BY "PRECISION DIVISION" trying to play down these videos.. don't be FOOLED!! They are a fucking FRAUD company! They go by a lot of different names.. but the dumbass owner still has his name "Rob" all over the net! They are a FRAUDULENT company that will STEAL your logic boards! This piece of shit tried to steal two macbook boards from me and will steal yours!! stay FAR FAR away!!
Hi, someone gave me their dv9202xt to look at, it was displaying double images in bios and os. I watch half a dozen reflow videos on you tube and finally decided to use the isopropyl alcohol in a little aluminium candle holder. I filled the can up about 2/3 and lit er up. Still waiting on a heat gun to arrive to do the job "properly" decided to see if the laptop worked. It is working ok now. If it stops working later I will do a repeat of the isopropyl alcohol and candle can trick. Thank you
@nicholasbiblelife awesome, i'm glad it worked for you too! As you said, it probably isn't as reliable a fix as you'd get using a heat gun... But my computer was pretty much a lost cause, so getting a bit more life out of it was preferable to paying for a fix or letting it collect dust.
I have the same laptop and mine crapped out... little did I know there was a class action lawsuit going on nvidiasettlement . com and fairnvidiasettlement . com
... fatiguing the joints. This kind of precision does not happen by accident. Even with the best equipment, I can't take my eyes off of what I'm doing for a second.
If the reflow fails, I go right into reballing. I reball the chip - and then apply my thermal modifications. I can even do a thermoelectric mod!
I just hate to see people ruin boards - it's such a waste. I see it all the time.
Let me tell you what I see on a daily basis. Real life example. There's a shop in Port St Lucie Fl, who sends me about 5 HP laptops a week. Most of them were fixed someplace else - most of them have pennies inside them. They didn't last.
These systems WILL last a very long time if they are repaired properly - but you need a multimodal approach.
When I repair these systems, I'm doing it on a dark infrared rework station. It's far more accurate, you get a good wetting without......
Do have any idea how much damage you can cause by doing this? The penny "trick" is very temporary - and often results in permanent damage.
I pull loose change off of GPUs every single day, and I'm sick of seeing people ruin motherboards because they're following stupid youtube videos like this.
Read the Q & A at PrecisionDivision . com to read more about this issue.
Don't do this to your motherboard - you're going to ruin it. Even if it works temporarily - it won't last.
@geeksarenotcool I'm not crazy, but I lost all hope for this laptop and I had already moved on to a new computer. I'm also an engineer and I've fabbed my own PCBs. Paying a pro to fix it would be throwing good money after bad... the GPU is defective, so all repairs are temporary.
I used the penny to replace a piece of foam, not to apply excessive pressure. I now use the PC with a cooling pad which keeps the internal temperature below 50°C. When the PC finally dies, it will not be missed :P
If you were an engineer you would have understood concepts like TAL and design standards like T.I.M.
You may have a degree in engineering, but you clearly have no experience in modern SMD rework and should not be giving bad advice. It is highly unprofessional and you should know better.
@geeksarenotcool Another thing, if you go to the site the owner states that his procedure uses expensive equipment, a lot of know how etc but he assures us that the fix will be permanent. But read his warranty....3 months on the gpu...yeah sure, like I'm going to spend $200+ dollars for a permanent fix that he will only warranty for 3 months.
@TheFullmetalman No, I use a small USB dongle for wifi (the Airlink AWLL6075). I don't know exactly how the wifi fails, but it would be nice if I could resolder that too.
@ciberhormaza I filled the tea candle container nearly to the top. I let it burn until the alcohol was gone (just once) and removed the container. Next, I used the "penny trick": I put fresh thermal compound on the GPU, put a penny on top, put thermal compound on the penny, and replaced the heat sink. The computer works for now, but it might be the extra pressure from the penny, not the alcohol, that did the trick. If it fails again, I'll use a better reflow technique.

Works better and more reliably in the oven. And pennies are not smooth enough unless you grind them flat on both sides
