  • J'adore ♥

  • awesome!!!!!!!

  • Wow, I haven't heard much early (pre-'87-ish) Midnight Oil. Sounds VERY New Wave, and I mean that as a positive.

  • all albums signed by the band, except P. /Gifford didn't sign 1st 2 coz didn't play on them!! After sound check at the 'Venue" . Played "Echo Beach" Awsome!!!

  • as the comic book guy from Simpsons would say,,,,, 'best,,,,song,,,,,ever.....'

  • OMG Rob Hirst looks so young! Fantastic drummer! I saw several Oils concerts in Adelaide during the 80's. Thanks guys! Oils forever!

  • Apparently one person who watched this was totally deaf! No other explanation. This is PURE GOLD!!!

  • Great editing on the video - and it is so good to find some tracks from Place without a postcard (I moved overseas, took only 20 of my 300 CDs - Place without a post card, Head Injuries and 10,9.8... are among the 20!

  • if this doest get you rocking your probably in the morgue

  • no kidding, at times you think they are best band in the world

  • if i never make it to the top it'll never bother me.......mmmmmmmmm

  • Midnight Oil coulda' been anything without Peter Garrett

  • top song!!!!!

  • Seeing the oils live back then was as great as pub rock ever got. They were the best experience the thriving Sydney scene had going IMHO. Price of admission; about $4.00.

  • 2SM was my station in 1981....I reckon they played it there too

  • peter garrett never gets any older - cos he never gets graya !

  • I loved this song that much,i still know the lyrics...

  • Rob Hirst - totally magnificent - he's the best "feel" drummer in the world!

  • Gen X rules, gaa gaa sucks!

  • my ALL TIME favorite song of Midnight Oil !!!

  • holy crap i was wo0ndering where i knew the title! Grinspoon did a version of this!

  • Pete, you're still a big stick insect! ;)

  • Best Australian band.

    Noone touched them live.

  • FUckkkkk . The OILS were the BOMB in the 80s , Peerless for originanlity , energy, rhythm and memorable anthems .. alas such qaulities are so rare today . Garret has chiselled out an Hitsoric Musical legacy but more poignantly iconic status in OZ! Maybe the most enduring rock band from oz of all time..Well u aslo have ACDC , INXS , Angels, Skyhooks hmmmmm ...

  • Peter Gifford bass player....Got that bit.....so who is the other bass player that keeps popping up in this clip on the red rickenbacker 4001???? (2.26)

  • @retrostuff1

You're right about the bass. I've looked and have no idea. I recognize the bass. Yes, it's a 4001 ( I have one, a 4003 and a 4001C64S). I stopped and started the clip a few times just to be sure. I don't recognize the player. Possibly a ring in? He had a hell of a mullet though!

  • gay song

  • @hunter14525

    You're a NOBJOCKEY!

  • it's funny i just tried to get into "power and the passion" (on the right) and it said because it's "owned by sony" that it isn't available in your country. WTF.

  • @origamishishou

    that's because Sony are cunts.

  • @gupsnot Dont say that ! Cunts are great! SONY IS EVIL !!!!

  • @candidcomment

    a fair point.

  • @candidcomment true. very true.

  • @gupsnot thanks im glad that some people agree.

  • Terrific. Great band, great music & the best of times & friends. Love to you all xx.

  • these guys have so many great songs, legends!!

  • I thought their politics were asinine and juvenile, but god almighty could this band rock. I saw them back in the early 80s when they could tear a theatre apart with their energy and this song...well, anyone who isn't excited by this song needs their pulse checked. Still jumps out of the speakers today. All great musicians but Rob Hirst - all hail Rob!!

  • Northern Beaches band from Sydney ... if you grew up there in the 70's/80's you know what this band meant to us.

  • A song for the times!

  • Whats going on with Aussie politics?

  • A band of the people.....superb.

  • wow he is the one!!

  • goosebumps. 80s yeah. high school. oils. yeah

  • Place Without a Postcard ......YEAHHHHHHHHHHH

  • onya Sir pete

  • Hey guys. Stop obssesing about Peter, it was the band that made them great. Rob Hirst is one of the best drummers ever! Moginie and Rotsey on guitar, Please! They were always political and there,s not many bands around that can say that. at least they tried to make a difference.

  • @crossy1963 it's moginies band really

  • @crossy1963 Garrett is such a sucky sell-out.... that's a solicitor for you. Good band though.

  • wedding cake island is the ultimate post surf song too!

  • to see them live, only band that even competes these days is :the fireballs" for the energy.., thinking Blue Juice do though

I miss the Oils live stuff!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • wanna be the one, who does?

  • Place without a postcard was their best album.

  • Classic Aussie punk..

  • when Peter was cool ...

  • sweet jesus i've just regressed 20 years

My neighbors must be wondering WTF i'm doing

Dancing around like a fool...heheh luv it! 8-)

  • thumb up ...... classic... love it

  • Look I am an old guy but gee this song is a classic. The Oils from 1980 until 1988 or so were a great band. So so after that. A cranking rock song.

  • Didn't 2JJ absolutely flog this!

  • I believe Triple M did too!

On the occasion you can hear this on Triple M.

  • @govettsleap so they should have

  • i love the guy from The Hills Have Eyes!!!!

  • hahahahahah AWESOME COMMENT!

  • Great work nzoz, been waiting for this a long time.

Cheers mate and thanks for uploading

  • hee hee hee hee...

I like the way this song ends. lol

  • Place without a Postcard. Magnificent album. look at how young Hirstey is WOw!! Although i was 18 & i sure aint that now!! OILS saw them at the MCG They Rocked!

  • @demonsbutterfly I was very surprised to read negative reviews of Place Without A Postcard. I think it's the quintessential early Oils record, and full of terrific songs. I like it more than Diesel And Dust and Blue Sky Mining. My favourite oils records are the least pop and the most impressive in terms of songwriting. Those records being Head Injuries, Place Without A Postcard, Earth And Sun And Moon, and Breathe. Sails In The Sunset and 10-1 get honorable mention for their live performances.

  • @demonsbutterfly I was 18 in 1981 too....many happy memories in my first year at uni listening to Places Without A Postcard whiel puffing the Magic Dragon lol

  • @MrJamesBond007 Many a cone to this wonderful album!!!!

  • Pete b4 he sold OUT...How's that Gunns deal in Tassie going Pete?

You should have joined the Greens.

    Fed Labor r sellouts.

  • Sold out? the dudes always fuckin tried 2 make a difference! He was a member of the greens u dick! Greens dont make policy, labor do, so who will u try 2 influence?? Understand

  • great rock band greatest as good as any live show ive seen but pete sold out when he joined the labour party and you know it he will toe the party line now

  • Take me back to those days godammit!!!

     Oils !!!

  • When you find a way to get back there take me with you! Good bands,Good days, good times.

  • yea !!!

  • up the fucking oils onya pete

  • How good would it having Pete performing at your house. Once the epileptic dancing starts through him in with the washing. Now thats thinking green!!!

  • this is why I took to Midnight oil at age 15, they where like no one else around

  • wow, i´m a 21 brazilian guy and i never knew this band 'til i listen to beds are burning and sincerely i didnt believe a 81 band could make a perfect song like this one. also bein from australia, maybe that´s why they arent as famous as another bands from usa and england for example..

i am findin great australins jewels lately, and it´s bein amazin.

    greetings from Brazil.

  • Hi

Check out: The Angels - No secrets.

  • hey thank you so much. this is a great band too. it helped a lot. thank you once again.

  • or try the saints

  • DannyelBonJovi, try Spy vs Spy and "Don't tear it down". More quality Australian music.

  • good on you mate try bands like cog, mussels, and eddie current suppression ring.ROCK ON

  • Bein pourtant il l'est, mais par défaut.

Pourtant la il a vraiment chercher à faire de la daube.

Bein ouais mais qu'est-ce tu veux Peter on décide pas tout !

  • Peter Garret = Inspiration for Melbourne shuffle? Lol. 0:03 looks like it haha

  • Legends! One of the best bands ever!! I rest my case.

  • ...Awesome live !!

    This is soooo VERY COOOOL.

  • He is one of a kind.I loved the 80s.Wish Midnight Oil,The Radiators,ACDC & the Angels would just play 1 more huge mother of a concert all together oh what a concert it would be ;-)

  • Oh brings back such memories from the 80's,one of their best songs

  • Yes Paulolutk! An True Sonic Band, and your Lyrycs, and Social Impegnous, Yuor Intelligenge, FANTASTIC!The Midnight Oil NOT ARE DIED!LIVING FOREVER!

  • This band had essence. Lyrics. Music. Melody. I miss it. I'd like very much to wake up one day and have the notice that they come back to play again around the world. The nowadays bands are true trashes.

    MIDNIGHT OIL FOREVER!!!

  • fave oils song :)

  • Maybe I should shave my head.

  • Midnight é foda !!! Cresci ouvindo eles. Rock and Roll com atitude

  • je n'aurais jamais connu cette chanson sans les Silverchair

  • Chris Burke with Joe and John DeMasi covered this song!

  • go the oils and all power to Pete Garret - such a strong bloke. I just hope the machine lets him do some real good.

  • the only oil diggers divining divinity i know. go your flow graced gentlemen giving glee. :) t

  • Oils kick major ass, I saw them in the 1980s in New Zealand and they tore it up!

  • my youth was spent on this band! seen live 14 times all round victoria, best years of my life. thank god for the oils!!!

  • WOOOOOHOOOOOOOOOO!!!!! LOVE IT!

  • Despite the short length the message is powerful, lyrics are awesome.Another great Midnight oil song.

  • it's true their guitars were always pretty inspired. It was the time when pop music was really creative, XTC, Wire, Talking Heads, Roxy Music, all the prog space rock....

  • wow, a music video with no footage of the actual song being performed...

  • Yeah exactly.

  • This was about the first single I bought as a kid. Thought it was amazing. So different from everything else going around, and musically bloody complex. Gimme those days again. from memory the B side was a good 'un too

  • I think that the B side was "Written in the Heart" which is the heaviest song on the "Place without a Postcard" album

  • Yes complex. It starts in E major and ends in F major. Now who the fuck else can do that? Nobody. Power and the Passion: from Eb minor to E minor and back again. Nobody else can do that because they're so stupid. Guitar solo on Surfin' With A Spoon: it's all harmonics and pulling the whammy bar BACKWARDS. And so forth. Rock musicians in the US are full of themselves; these dudes make music.

  • Totally underrated musically this band. This song is great harmonically and the arrangement, dynamics are just brilliant. One of their greatest tracks. I reckon from Head Injuries through 10...1 they were almost prog rock.

  • I only got to see them live once : ( I sure miss them coming out with new stuff!! Best band ever by far!

  • Whoo hoo...5000 views.

  • Nice beanie Jim.

  • hmmm.... clips just a compilation of other clips, different songs. oh well, great tune none the less

  • Nice clip show

  • "If I don't make it to the top it'll never bother me"

Well never mind Peter, Environment Minister's pretty bloody good anyway!

  • doskonale polaczenie dexys mid. runners i the clash z australijskim akcentem

  • I miss those days seeing the Oils live. I remember going to my first Oils concert in 84 at the sports and entertainment centre in Melbourne and there was a big sign displaied saying Peter Garrett for Senator

    Well close enough now

    Go OILS!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • yeah this is an amping track... check out the doubleJ live recording on goat island in sydney harbour from the flouro board short and stubbies era! classic rock. gits the hairs standing up every time

  • This is my favourite Oils track. Raw punk energy and almost prog rock arrangements. I've thrashed to this song *many* times over the years.

  • I agree

If I had to pick one, prob. this.

  • Huuuiii, Pete Garrett war total sexy !

  • Peter Garrett was sexy? Really? I would never have thought anybody would think PG was sexy, except maybe his wife.

However, he is a very fit man and one of the most unique performers in Rock 'n' Roll.

  • And he pretty much looks as he did in 1981. It's the haircut, I'm sure.

  • Nice mix

    PG 4 PM

  • fanny head

  • Raw, unpolished Oils. Garrett in full flight, Hirst on fire with the sticks. Sydney's live music scene in the late 70's/early 80's was like no other. Damn I wish I was there.

  • hmm i found the montageyness a bit offputting - love the early mirror effect but prefer cold cold change as a song anyway

  • pffftttt who cares, id love to light up with pete! PG 4 PM!! johnny dont surf!!

    sweet vid.

  • Pete Garrett, the lead singer. Now a politician, holding the seat of Kensington in Sydney smoked weed with Daniel Johns, lead singer of Silver Chair.

Johns said this during an interview.

Garrett then released a media release saying to the effect that Johns was just making a joke for the benefit of the interview, to make it interesting.

Ha, Pete you're a politician. Politician is a synonym for liar.
