wonderful story steph..i ran away to nyc when i was 17 and i got seperated from the freind i was with. i was alone scared, had been attacked and chased by men and i asked ppl to help me but noone would except a black woman. she was with er 2 kids taking them to the movies. she took me with them..the movie was bloodsport.took me home with her..fed me let me sleep there. and helped me get home. i wish i could find her somehow to thank her.

It is a definaition that is changeable and adaptable, because it is personal, and because all people have different views on strength. But One concept in relation to this definaition is universal, I think: That a woman should beleive in herself, stand up for the things she knows to be right and have the grace to accept herself for who she is.
I was raised by a strong woman. While my dad left, my mom moved the refrigerator, beds, car, groceries, bedding, etc. to a smaller place where we struggled happily.
She cried when my dad left, but after we moved, she never cried again; she was working instead. I remember eating the same thing for weeks and still being happy and feeling safe.
Don't get me wrong, I missed my dad and he played an instrumental role in my life, but my mom held it all together. Dad looked after himself.

People back in the day in general IMO had stronger character. These days it's a different story especially with the 20-30 something folks. wonderful story steph..i ran away to nyc when i was 17 and i got seperated from the freind i was with. i was alone scared, had been attacked and chased by men and i asked ppl to help me but noone would except a black woman. she was with er 2 kids taking them to the movies. she took me with them..the movie was bloodsport.took me home with her..fed me let me sleep there. and helped me get home. i wish i could find her somehow to thank her.

I was raised by a strong woman. While my dad left, my mom moved the refrigerator, beds, car, groceries, bedding, etc. to a smaller place where we struggled happily.
She cried when my dad left, but after we moved, she never cried again; she was working instead. I remember eating the same thing for weeks and still being happy and feeling safe.
Don't get me wrong, I missed my dad and he played an instrumental role in my life, but my mom held it all together. Dad looked after himself.

StephStance, you can't identify with SgtWP. there's a difference between knowing some black people and actually empathizing with our experience & ethos. that being said, it's rather presumptuous & a bit condescending to declare how that man should feel or what you think his problem is unless you're the thought police? i respect your feminism & your good intention but your arrogance is disturbing. I don;t have to be black to know when I am hearing a young man placing the load on black women.I addressed his disrespect for all women. You can not lift a person by weighing them down.

i don't care about her being gay. that's not my point. in much the same way i can't pontificate about her experience or your experience, she can't make informed commentary on mine. if you think gay women are handled by the white supremist power structure in the same way that black men are, you're mistaken. empathy is the most important tool that comes with adulthood. once you understand that you'll never understand, then we'll respect each other. that's what i'm getting at

Whether or not YOU care, isn't the point. The point IS she's a minority and she shares SIMILIAR experiences to those that BLACK people have faced including sexism [in place of racism], hatred, bigotry and discrimination. The same? of course not. But to say she can't comment because she's NOT black is pure BS. If you're gonna play victim 'til the end of time, you're right, I'll never understand. And according to you, I can't empathize with you, cause I'm NOT black. Your argument makes no sense.

she doesn't share a similar experience at all. she's not aggressively pursued by law enforcement, she's not viewed as possessing inferior intellect, no one is trying to toss her a basketball instead of a book. she doesn't. she's gotten shitted on, true. that sucks. nut like i said, i don't care about her being gay. most sophisticated people don't. i'm talking about her analysis & her degree of humanity (empathy is a fucntion of humanity)

Two of the three are non-college graduates..incidentally, they grew up in Gardena, CA and they're both wealthy. I guess that's what happens when everyone viewed you as being inferior intellectually.
