  • I have an Atari 2600 game called "Venture" where this thing chases you after a while that I was told years ago was called Evil Otto. Is Venture related to this game in any way?

  • @uofm97 No, Venture is another game entirely. Was an arcade game brought out by Exidy(see KLOV for details).

  • @charlesn898 Okay, thanks.

  • hey this look kinda decent!:)

  • who im i playing as in this game a men's room logo shooting at robots?

  • Am I the only one who wishes there was a two player deathmatch mode in Berzerk? Kind of like Outlaw, but you have full reign of the screen?

  • Evil Otto.... the mascot for Wal-Mart and the bane of the small business...

  • update version ~ pls ~ & cloud gaming :)

  • Actually some badass music would be welcomed.

  • berzerk ~ re-boot ~ atari ~ pls :)

  • This game made me piss myself when I was 4

  • Comment removed

  • what kind of wussy would play without EVIL OTTO....fear him

  • I like how Mark busts out on some phat Atari remixes at the end of some reviews of the current game he's reviewing. Makes me want to work on an EP of Atari 2600 dubstep or techno tracks.

  • the atari 2600 cartridges had some bad ass art covers.

  • 3:45 Fat Samus xDDDD

  • lol, people hate on these games don't realize that these were the first steps towards the games people play these days, bleh ignorance

  • Another nice feature about this game? The player's death noise!

    Best. Death noise. EVAR!

  • @netsurferx1

Yeah, that's how you should die in Halo

  • When comparing this to Call of Duty, this game looks well... BETTER!

  • lol otto looks like a gay beach ball with a asian face

  • Yep, definitely better than Far Cry Vengeance.

  • What's the music at 0:01 to 0:07?

  • @rehzon its the CGR theme!

  • you killed Otto!!!! No one can ever kill Otto!!!!!

  • Never knew that a robot's rapid fire against the wall could actually make for a good beat. Funky.

  • ~Intruder Alert, Intruder Alert!! The Humanoid must not escape! ~ Berzerk, oh how I loved that arcade machine.

  • this was my favorite game... I always cracked up when i got shot/hit the wall for some reason i thought it was really funny

  • The sounds in the game alone, bring me back to my early school days. Such a classic!

  • The robots remind me of the Yellow Demon (AKA Rock Monster) from Mega Man.

  • Has any one noticed that when the Man shoots the robots the they blow up in a smiley face. Watch very carefully....

  • @jeremyrulz777 i was just about to say that lol.

  • @jeremyrulz777 They do

  • When you shoot the auto mazeon's the evil otto smiley face appears for a brief moment.

  • In the arcade version the bots were allowed to shoot diagonally making the game even harder. Frenzy is the sequel to Berzerk.

  • Comment removed

  • the cod of the 80's lol

  • I think this is the best game in the world. I love it. Frenzy in the arcade is pretty awesome as well. I can play Berzerk for hours (not all one game, mind you) and never get bored! Great review!

  • This game has literally killed some people.

  • It doesn't matter if you did bring your atari 2600 and any game you wanted.

    No plug=No fun :'(

  • You know the robots explode into smiley faces, I guess Evil Auto (Otto?) is a ghost, the ghost of a robot, to be exact.

  • Berzerk rocks, but the 2600 is no VECTREX

  • The best part about this game, is that if you position yourself correctly, the lasers the robots shoot can go through your neck and you don't die.

  • if i was choseing a vectrex game to take... I would chose the multi cart

  • The vectrex version is obv better.

  • @superandom Perhaps, but hands down, this was the best arcade game port to the Atari 2600. Oh, wait, Berzerk & also, Wizard of Wor. As close as you could get considering the 2600's limitations. Although Missile Command & Space Invaders were decent too ports too. Asteroids, although fun, lost much in the conversion, the original being vector based graphics & all. Now, a port of Asteroids to the Vectrex would have been awesome!

  • This is, without a doubt, and always will be, my favorite title on my beloved, wood grained, original Atari 2600. Perfect game just as it is. An update on this game on XBLA would scare me because I fear they would add backgrounds and change things too much. The beauty in this game is it's simplicity. Great game and great review!!!

  • great stuff - 30yrs ago :-)

  • The Vectrex version is so much better.

  • Love the death noise on this game!

Easily the best death noise ever...Of all time.

  • I always loved how Atari games had such epic stories for such simple games. A shame this game didn't actually have an ending so that players could actually end the story. No "And lived happily ever after" for this game.

  • The guy on the artwork makes me think of Luke Skywalker.

  • The robots er, Automazeons could shoot diagonally in the Arcade version. It was pretty brutal.

  • Evil Otto is badass

  • Berzerk was the first video game known to have been involved in the death of a player. In January 1981, 19-year-old Jeff Dailey died of a heart attack soon after posting a score of 16,660 on Berzerk.[8] In October of the following year, Peter Burkowski made the Berzerk top-ten list twice in fifteen minutes, just a few seconds before also dying of a heart attack at the age of 18

  • why reviewing it again?

  • i wish they'd release this for game room on xbl or psn

  • I was at a flea market over the weekend, place was called Hoke E. Geez, and I was actually looking around for NES games... To my dismay, the only ones I could find, on ANY system really, were sports games. I HATE sports games. Until I came across a bunch of Atari 2600 games... I saw Berzerk, and I remembered this review... Mind you, I do not have an Atari 2600... But after seeing this, Atlantis, and Combat all in one spot, I decided to get one tomorrow after I cash my paycheck from work. :)

  • @chosentonessournotes

Let me know how it went for you. I use to own this game when I was younger. Berzerk was one of my most favorite games for the 2600 and it had very good art work. Although I do not remember being able to shoot diagonally or being able to kill Otto. I also do not remember the robots killing them selves so many times by running into walls either. This may have been the reason why I love Robotron and Smash TV so much and why I want more games like them.

  • i love the robots eyes the way they rotate around

  • LOL @ BG.

  • I played it on Atari 2600 when I was about 10 years old(I was born in 1972),but I also tried hardly on the arcade coin-operated machines. But the game Berzerk of Atari 2600 was much confortable, less complicated and variable, because I did not have the need to insert coins on the arcades coin-operated machines too often.

  • Don't you play as Otto in the game called Venture? Eerily similar.

  • You forgot to mention that two ppl died of heart attacks after playing the b&w arcade version

You need to know this ppl!!!!!!

  • Yeap Atari Artworks really nice :)

  • if youd be on that island with bezerk youd get a pretty damn high score, probaly the world record

  • Heck yeah. I love this game. Great video.

  • Loved this game.Great cover too.The Atari XL computer version even had sampled speech!

  • did anyone notice when the robots blow up they have smily faces?

  • @StickPeopleAndPuff The explosion graphics are that of Evil Otto, only it's a negative image of him lol

  • @StickPeopleAndPuff yeah. weird,huh?

  • somehow in berserk i once dropped my gun and the automazeons didnt have the decency to let me grab it.

  • i scored so high on mode 1 that it reset on me:(

  • What's your highest score on Berzerk?

  • I love that you have to use your imagination to play ATARI 2600 ! ;) If you have a great imagination you can see that it looks like GTA IV ;)

  • Should also be on the Vectrehhh... HOLY SH*T!!!! IT IS!!! F*UCK YEAH!!!

  • I had this game!!!!!!

    nice one

  • i played this game 5 sec and shutted the game

  • this is better on a vectrex

  • Berzerk was simply beautiful!

  • @cobrabase And still is. I even made my own board game of it back in the day ; )

  • My favorite Atari game ever!

  • Turning the robot's rapid fire into a dance beat at the end had me rolling! Back in the day I'd let those robots just shoot at a wall while I would dance around the room to the beat. CLASSIC!

  • If you can find it you should do a review of Berserk for 5200 it was very close to the arcade version in look and even featured the voice samples like "Chicken come back and fight like a robot" or "stop the humanoid/ Stop the intruder" " from the arcade

  • @Evilmonkey66699 he hates atari and 5200. i don't

  • On a side note, the Atari 2600 games had some of the best instruction manuals and boxes of any system, ever. Look at the cover of this game, or Yar's Revenge, or Defender...sure the game graphics may have just been blocks on a solid background, but the artwork on the package is what encouraged you to use your imagination when playing. It really brought the games to life!

  • Ah yeah, Berzerk.

Before there was a bomb-laden zombie...before there were Devilsaurs or Fel Reavers...there was Evil Otto.

I loved this game, but I hated that smiley-faced bastard.

  • Nice keep it up n let no one bring you down. thats what i do.

  • Otto reminds me of getting killed in Faceball 2000.

    "Have a nice day"

  • god damn evil otto i was so glad that you could kill that jerk in frenzy

  • i like shooting the robots in a certain way when i get the chance LOL just fo r the heck of it

  • I think the art designer for this game was inspired by Gundam. The Auto-mazeon at 3:47 looks like a Zeon Gogg.

  • WHy cant i Get this game online!

  • Evil otto came from Jim Otto a taddletale worker at atari who grinned when he chawed you out!

  • random fact: after a total of 17 minutes of no movement from the player, the game will force reset itself: basically a kill timer. Odd that the programmers thought to put in such, eh?

  • The arcade version is very very similar to the 5200 port. Both are classic.

  • My favourite game too! Its actually the first game someone got a heart attack and died from, that's why Otto is so scary, he watched the guy die, but kept on smiling...

  • YAY for two reasons- I'm not the only one who made the Maximilian connection with these robots and I'm not the only one who remembers "Black Hole." LOL

  • I'm playing this on my 2600 emulator. Its loads of fun. Thanks for recomending this game to me! ^ ^

  • shoot into the right side exit, and the shot will come out of the left, I think the instructions even mentioned that. :) Love the robot designs in the manual. Also, someone made an awesome rom hack of this into a Dr. Who game where ya fight pretty convincing looking Daleks. :D

  • You know the guys that made robotron and smash tv, took some ideas from this game.

  • My favorite single player 2600 game as well. When the robots moved sideways, they always looked like McDonald's Fry Guys to me. I used to hate it when your laser would hit their's and you would be stuck and if you moved you would get hit . Oh and when the game was set so that you couldnt kill otto, that was hard.

  • This is the best game for atari 2600. IT required quick eye hand coordination, especially in the higher levels.

  • Well, ok, so it's just about getting a high score. I can appreciate that. It's still pretty dull. Perhaps the arcade looked more polished and perhaps it would have meant more to play the arcade first.

  • dogeymon83, "How is this game fun? I just don't get it."

I feel the same way about Halo (and Quake, UT, etc.) I like Operation Flashpoint and Battlefield games, though.

  • dogeymon83, I was referring to the gameplay. Circle-strafing and bunny-hopping got boring for me in a few minutes, the last time I played a game like this (UT 1). I prefer "tactical" shooters...or even 2d shmups.

  • @SuperGuyincognito how cant you like quake if your and old school gamer :S? its a fucking classic

  • @Leoooonard Quake 1? I liked the grenade launcher in quake... As far as I remember, when it came out, the game ran and looked like crap on my crappy computer back then, so I don't have fond memories of it. I did like some of the mods for UT99 and quake 3.

  • @SuperGuyincognito quake 1 and 2 still have a strong and living community actully. no the game does not look like crap unless you had a bad pc back in the day. i still play it to this day.

check out the "DDE3 - Why QuakeWorld is better than any other FPS game" video on youtube and "get quaked 3".

but also these are HARDCORE fps games, the popular fps games now are on consoles and are way slower and in my opinion not as fun.

  • @SuperGuyincognito unreal tournament??? you heretic bastard!!! you should be dead by now!!!

  • @SuperGuyincognito i think that Of is boring but battlefield is awsome. well bf2 is best

  • @jayjayteam The original OF (the one released ten years ago) was fun. Lately, when I join ArmA 2 servers, most people are playing weird "cops and robbers" mods... :(

  • to dogeymon83 listen kid you dont have any respect for the consoles that ;ayed the foundation for the new ones that u play now so shut the fuck up and go home to your mom

  • Have you even played this game? Before you judge a game just by the look, you need to play it. "How is this game fun?" Well how is a game like WoW fun? It really has no end and when the servers go down it will basically cease to exist. Yet millions of people play it.

Back in the early 80's it was about having fun and getting a high score. It was not about the graphics or look of the game. I have played this game in the arcade before and it looks exactly like this. It's just fun to play

  • Of course I've played Berserk. I own it for my Atari 2600. I appreciate simple Atari games. I understand the fun of getting high scores.

But Berserk is extremely dull. But someone explained a little more about it, and I suppose I sorta get it. So you don't need to try to "convert" me. I'm alright.

  • @superlugia3 what game are you tlking about? i'm pretty shure ive never heard of it.can you explain?

  • @superlugia3 Berzerk is FREAKING AMAZING!!!!! I bought it in a pawn shop for my dad's Atari and I was addicted for a while.

  • @dogeymon83 Meg, who let you back in the house?

  • so are you

  • 2:57

    evil auto?

  • Apparently this was the first video game that caused a death.

  • @WiiNetwork2

Someone played it for so long they had a heart attack.

  • @lookatmedriving Seriously?

  • @lookatmedriving Yea i think two people did. Thats crazy.

  • @lookatmedriving I thought it was the Arcade version that caused the heart attacks of those two men, not the Atari 2600 version.

  • @lookatmedriving REALLY??? how?

  • @lookatmedriving

    Explain?

  • @hongdekong

some guy tried to break a record, I forgot the actual reason so maybe he just was an addict. anyway, he played the game standing for 20+ hours or so and than had a serious heart attack that killed him.

  • wind squid is his game name

  • i am surprised you didn't note the fact that you can shoot through one side and it comes out the other..i love that! i'm going to break this game out again now

  • It looks alot better on the 2600 then on the vectrex because of the spinning robot heads i love that.

  • The vectrex had spinning heads, too.

  • It was the speech synthesis in the arcade game that made berzerk so creepy - "Intruder Alert! Intruder Alert!!", "Human, you do not have long to live" (or something like that), "destroy the human" - really good stuff back then!

  • Did you shoot Evil Otto? Oh, you get the option to kill him. Cool.

Too bad there isn't an option to make it so the exits only open up if you kill all the robots.

Notice the smiles when they explode.

    Maximilian was scary.

  • this game looks really easy but idk lol :D nice review

  • It gets much harder very quickly, trust me.

  • ur good at atari

  • Comment removed

  • Dude, I thought they looked like Maxmillion, also. :D

  • In the arcade, which I never played, I don't think Otto was able to be shot.

  • Someone made a Dr. Who hack of this one. You play as the 4th Doctor ( The humanoid sprite had the hat and scarf ) and the robots were now Daleks, the eyesticks were the parts rotating. And Evil Otto was replaced with a Davros face..

  • I've always liked this game. The Arcade version had some cool and funny voice effects. Like if you leave a screen without killing all the robots Otto says in an awesome 80's robot voice, "Coward! Fight like a robot!" The robots taunt you when they kill you and when you lose all your lives. And Otto gets mad when you clear a stage. Truly an awesome game.

  • i bought a box ful of atari games then i was so happy to find bezerk but i was looking more than i figured out i had two copies sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet

  • Did You Know That The Same Happy Face from Berzerk is Featured In another atari 2600 game such as Fire Fly, The Happy Face is White on there.

  • Oh man, I hated the happy face lol

  • Arcade version actually did enhance the game, not by better graphics since that's clearly not the case but by talking robots, run off the screen and they robots will call you chicken and will say shoot the chicken in the next screen. It's actually funny to see games actually talking down at you and more games need it. That's one of the reasons why I play "bite the bullet" on my PC. Constantly tells you that you suck and that you are a moron. Why can't more games lower your self esteem.

  • For me there is no question which game i would choose to take with in the deserted island.

    BERZERK!

  • Can you actually escape, or is it just an endless battle?

  • I remember sitting and playing this game for HOURS, back in 1982- oh, and how much homework did I NOT DO as a result. Like kiddie heroin this game was/is, being so damned addictive. Almost as bad as was Pitfall, Yar's Revenge,or Space Invaders!

  • anyone notice when the robots explode they make a smiley face for a split second?

  • HA!

  • back in '80 I coulda bought a car for all the cash i stuffed into this game

  • Money well spent ^_^

  • Having got this game for the first time, I can confirm its maddening addictiveness.

Also find some footage of the arcade version: the voice of Evil Otto is hilarious.

  • One of the coolest things about this game is that the enemies can shoot through your neck and you won't die.

Great game, the arcade version was better looking... but not by much. I wish the sequel (Frenzy) had come to the 2600 or 7800.

  • I hate Evil Otto. He's too hard to escape and/or he forces you to run into robot fire. It's just not fair. I prefer the versions without Otto so it's just me and the robots.

  • Holy crap, when the robots explode they have an Evil Otto pattern.

  • While I agree that no amount of HD graphics or such could improve this game, I must mention that a joystick might not be the absolute best means of control. A nice little analogue stick, perhaps?

  • This is certainly a "throw-back". A game that kicked my ass when I was around 11 or so. Never got to beat it or play long enough to love it, in fact, I kinda hated it...mainly because the robots just kept on beating me. Great game, very challanging, and fun.

  • What the hell is your deal with commenting in every review of an atari game as it being primitive? It is what it is man. NES is primitive by todays standards as well. I have a hard time believing youre over 18.

  • No. The best 8-bit system was the Commodore 64.

But anyway back to NES - I have a hard time thinking of an NES game that I would want to play again. Maybe Super Mario because it has that "adrenaline feel" but that's about it. The rest of the games like FF1 and Zelda are dull and aged poorly (in my humble opinion).

Moden Final Fantasies and Zeldas are fun, but not the old 8-bit ones. I just can't stand their glacial pace.

  • Even classics can fail to hold up years later. FPSs in particular age horribly, I've found.

  • Have you played atari today? :)

  • Yea, but you don't want to know what I was playing...

  • beat em n eat em?

  • @RetroGamerNet Fuck yeah I have, But you don't wanna know what i was playing.

  • I was fortunate to play arcade berzerk back in the day, and the beauty of the 2600 port is that its very close. That is how games where judged back then, by how close they where to the arcade originals.

  • i love my virtual atari and berzerk rom. they kick nostalgic ass.

  • This game rules so much. One of my favorites...next to megamania & Demon attack.
