hi, i have amd phenom ii X2 550 3.1Ghz processor i jst had unlock my cores x2 to x4 but its not working properly after updating the x4 entirely system was hanging like idol within few minutes. That's why i could tried to make it 3 cores using with msconfig-advanced option-number of processors=3. working awesome, but i want x4 processor instead of 3cores..
My Motherboard is Gigabyte GA-MA74GMT-S2.
And how much voltage need to change while doing unlock....?????? Can u Pls explain me briefly..
@maheshtanay If your CPU can be unlocked the system should automatically determine the wattage it requires. If you have to ask about unlocking CPU cores then you shouldn't mess with the voltage, make sure the system runs stable with any cores you unlock. I'd run everything stock frequencies / voltages when attempting to do an unlock, maybe even an underclock if you think the unlocked core might only be able to run at a lower frequency / stable.
I bought mine when they first came out 6 months later unlocked it and overclocked it @3.4 ghz haven't tried to overclock it anymore. Running Windows 7 ultimate 64 bit very stable never any trouble.
It's not four cores until it completes a Prime95 torture test. I had to revert my X3 445 for that reason. Nothing else detected stability issues for me.
@d46512 i have my 4th core unlocked and its unstable in prime95 within 5 minutes, however, i've managed to play games and run other cpu stress tests for HOURS at a time, heating it up to 61C, and it still runs stable. my cpu is running at its normal speed of 3.0ghz, and after i ran these stress tests i've managed to lower the voltage to 2.5v and its still stable.
interestingly, linux fails to boot with the 4th core unlocked before it can even probe devices. i guess stability is code related
@mitko1251 Actually 7 sucks too because they removed half of the useful features and added nothing useful except maybe some networking and security improvements.
I have another question. Is the M.I.T. a Gigabyte only feature? I have an
MSI 770-C45 and I have been trying to figure out how to unlock the fourth core. Yes, I did a bias update. Everything that has to do with with CPU is called the "Cell Menu" and I can't find anything similar.
@watarball Performance is 100% software dependent. If a game only takes advantage of one core then having two won't increase performance for that game specifically though it would free up other resources. However in example Starcraft II does take advantage of four cores (maybe more though not sure) so you can increase performance with an application like that by unlocking a core PROVIDED that it's stable. Also comments do not appear until I approve them so be patient please.
@watarball Like I said it's software dependent: was the software designed to take advantage of more then three cores? If so you would see an increase in performance. Not all applications are optimized for more then 1, 2, 3, 4 or more cores. Starcraft II takes full advantage of all four cores I have so you would likely see a gain in SC2 from unlocking a fourth core. If software only utilizes 2 or 3 cores then unlocking the fourth does not benefit THAT application specifically.
@Theduxpower Just use the @Bios utility on the drivers CD to update from Windows without anything else running provided your copy of Windows runs without issues. Gigabyte has previously hidden the overclocking portions of their bios requiring you to press F1 to see the menu item.
Hi! I am listening, and I know it do not work on every CPU :P.
But it is still worth a try. And if you want to help me i would appreciate it.
I have downloaded the F5 bios, but im new at this.. I have a usb, and i have formated it with this guide, i tried posting the link but it did not work.
@Theduxpower Gigabyte Bios --> Press F1, follow the directions in the video; it's that simple. Look at the video views count and ask yourself if I can IM even half the people to help, that's what the video is for. Unless you're tweaking voltages you won't mess up your hardware and the worst you could do is have to restart your computer or reset the CMOS.
Dude you do know that not every AMD PHENOM x3 720 can be unlocked ??
AMD made a triple core only because the 4th core werent that stable.
BUT,, because of the cheap prices everyone bought a triple core they had to make some extra triple cores and those extras were actually quad cores. You are lucky to have a stable quad core processor, i also have one :))
@sniperclown Depends on if the unlocked core is stable or not. If it's unstable the OS might not boot, not sure if it could corrupt files. I can only speak from my experience which has been with a stable core.
@jabcreations I wish I could tell you. I did what you did in the vid and the computer flashed the bios and the system shut down but it would not turn back on. So I waited but nothing happened. I tried to turn the system on and it would not work. I put my old CPU back in and it booted up. I was able to unlock the 720 and it worked great but I think I'm going to leave it as a 3 core.
@workensmart The motherboard enables or disables access to the locked cores, not the CPU so I think something is wrong with your motherboard. Try the 550 out on a friend's computer, I really don't see any justification for throwing out a BE CPU so easily unless you truly know it's dead.
@jabcreations yea I guess I just got a bad 550 LOL. It worked fine before I tried to unlock it. I had it at 3.4ghz. I have the 720 OC to 3.4ghz as well the 720 is easier to OC.
no swearing, but thats your desktop? I think thats worse for a little kids mind then swearing. But who am i to say,ive never sworn in my life. nice vid though, helped me alot. 5*
Deneb is the core type, or in general if you look at the retail boxes the ones with the white "comet" logo (or black box editions) are quad cores even if they don't have all cores initially available. I bought a Regor (for my mother) which build as a dual core not knowing this. I'll add an annotation for others so good question.
lol guy, what will happen if u run the clock cali. with a full x4 cpu like 965 or 955... i'm sure nothing wud happen but it would rok! if it unlocked 4 cors to 6 core lol... hav any1 tried it?
Use AMD Overdrive and downclock the fourth core individually to see if you can get it to run stable; you can potentially clock it as low as 800MHz. You may get the fourth core to run stable at 1.4GHz, 2.6GHz, 900MHz, etc. If that doesn't work, reverse what I did with my bios.
i have a question.. i have this board on the way, and i was wondering.. should i just download the f5 bios to a flash drive and install it from there? or what do you recommend i do?
You can update either through the bios or via Gigabyte's @Bios program if you have a Gigabyte motherboard. It's generally sounder to flash your bios while NOT running an OS (Linux, Windows, etc) as an instability could mess up your bios flash and kill the motherboard. Gigabyte boards (recently all even low end boards) sport dual-bios however so this is less of a threat. I've used @Bios a couple times myself. The key is to be PATIENT and wait a few minutes though it's easier & quicker in general.
You can do this with the newer Phenom II 550 3.1ghz callisto dual core also, only it unlocks to a quad core that is faster than the Phenom II X4 965!
No joke... and runs very cool, especially compared to the AMD Athlon X2 5600+ that it replaced. I have my cores stable at 3.6ghz with 1.4v on the CPU core and I didn't mess with the frequency at all - just bumped up the multiplier.
Nice, I don't OC mine much, to about 3.1...it's an initial stepping any way. I usually underclock mine most of the time working on web stuff. I'm sure with some voltage I could stabilize it but it's not like it's not fast enough to do everything I want! :-)
No, over-heating is the main thing you have to watch out for. Also increasing the voltage beyond the default shortens the lifespan of the CPU.
Keep in mind the fourth core (or third and fourth) aren't guaranteed to actually work. They may not unlock, they may unlock and OC great, or they may unlock and only work at lousy frequencies.
No, if the unlocked core(s) are unstable you'll simply have to reset your bios. It's not like unlocking a core that is unstable will mean it will grow legs and go on a week long rampage in the local neighborhood.
Just a tip to anybody unlocking processor cores or otherwise adjusting settings with ACC, please make sure to install ALL of your SDRAM modules BEFORE you save the EC Firmware settings upon exiting the bios.
I have 8gb of RAM, that's 4 sticks of 2gb. Anyways, I once installed 2 sticks and then saved the EC Firmware, like done in this video, and when I'd gone to put my other SDRAM modules into the motherboard, it wouldn't post until resetting CMOS. Enjoy
Thanks for posting bro...I've been waiting for 4GB sticks to come out (2x4GB for 8GB) and read that they would be coming out the second half of this year. I've spotted some on Newegg though it's server memory and a bit pricey.
I really am not a Linux wizard though I recommend going to the package manager (Applications-->Add/Remove...), search for Wine, and it'll automatically install all required/related software.
Once Wine is installed just run EXE installers (may support MSI install files too, not sure) and I'd say 80% of the programs I've installed WORK. :-)
Most likely not, I've only read that AMD chipsets (and only specific ones) allow this. Additionally the nVidia 780a chipset is simply a rebranded nForce 5xx SLI chipset though you can always try updating your bios and checking to see if ACC has been added.
Yes it's a real core. AMD makes quads and disables either one core and sells it as an X3 or two cores and sells it as an X2.
Remember there is no guarantee that any cores will unlock...and add to the fact even if you unlock it that it may not be stable.
HOWEVER my fourth core has run stable. In XP's task manager right click on a game and set it's affinity and you can intentionally stress test the unlocked core(s).
Remember that with AMD's overdrive you can clock each core INDEPENDENTLY. ;-)
You can definitely try. If you don't have ACC option you may have to update your bios. I think certain chipsets (both north and south bridge) support the option.
@LietuvisN14 Your motherboard uses an Nvidia based chipset, unlocking requires specific AMD chipsets so you're out of luck unfortunately.

What Should I Do ??

@Themidozable10
1.) Don't be a spazz and post the same message over 9000 times.
2.) Look up if you need a specific chipset or not, I'm not sure off-hand.
3.) Gigabyte (and maybe other manufacturers) hide overclocking (F1 in bios).
4.) You may not have this option for your motherboard/bios even with an update.
5.) Your CPU may not have cores to unlock or they may be unstable.
Do the research, I'm simply here to let you know it MIGHT be possible to do.

im still not sure if my motherboard can do this, its an Asus 780a M3N-HT deluxe :(

Most likely not, I've only read that AMD chipsets (and only specific ones) allow this. Additionally the nVidia 780a chipset is simply a rebranded nForce 5xx SLI chipset though you can always try updating your bios and checking to see if ACC has been added.

true, ill see if i do that

Awesome! It's not virtual or anything? There's literally a fourth core that you woke up and was off before?
XR50ryder 2 years ago
Yes it's a real core. AMD makes quads and disables either one core and sells it as an X3 or two cores and sells it as an X2.
Remember there is no guarantee that any cores will unlock...and add to the fact even if you unlock it that it may not be stable.
HOWEVER my fourth core has run stable. In XP's task manager right click on a game and set it's affinity and you can intentionally stress test the unlocked core(s).
Remember that with AMD's overdrive you can clock each core INDEPENDENTLY. ;-)

Cool... so i could possibly unlock my x2 5000+?

You can definitely try. If you don't have ACC option you may have to update your bios. I think certain chipsets (both north and south bridge) support the option.
I'd love to hear your results! :-)

Yeah, i don't have ACC.. but i guess ill see if there's a bios i can update that will have it
