@jeffreyhunt45 It isn't a question of how far the scanner reaches out, it's a question of how far the signals reach out. For instance, you have got a scanner, but the antenna just sits there and picks up RF; it's the transmitter (whatever is propagating the signal) that can increase and decrease the range based on frequency/wavelength, transmitting power, antenna polarization, etc.
But to give you an answer, I can easily pick up aircraft, marine, Civil Air Patrol, police, fire, and EMS.
Hey man nice scanner! I am also having a hard time trying to program my triple truncking scanner.. i just got a pro 164 portable scanner for Christmas and no luck on how to program it.. if you figure it out let me know or make a video on how to program! im also in mass 25 mins. from RI..
Help, Sorry ran out of text space anyways just keep reading the manual trust me someday you will get it the trunking is a little hard to explain though
hey, the CTCSS or DCS just reads the frequency of the tone when the dispatcher from the fd drops them I dont know how to get it on there but I have a GRE PSR 400 and its similar I just kept trying to understand the manual. The trunking was complicated for me too I live up in mass and monitor the staties but I just kept rading the manual again and again and finally got it. The trunking justs tells the radio ID the person is transmiting on and it follows it to who will talk next. Hope this will he
I have a Radioshack scanner its the pro 164 it isnt worth a crap lots of static and interference, my old bearcat scanner scans faster and better. I will never get another Radioshack scanner. I use 3 scanners for work as a stringer .
@nightstringers hey now i own 3 radio shack scanners and 2 bearcat scanners. all work the same and work very good. you probably got a faulty one. the radio shack scanners that i own are a pro433 , pro83 (lost it), and a pro2052. the bearcats i have are a BC348CLT(built in alarm clock and am fm radio weather alert) and a twin turbo sportcat (model number unknown) all work the same and get the same interference.
yep, yes a few scanners have them built in to listen to encrypted digital transmissions such as apco or baud, but there are also a few transmissions (digital) which cannot be intercepted at all, for eg Tetra, which my police is on now :( no scanner can listen to tetra
I got this today and it was my first scanner I've owned. It's really nice, I love it :D

Watch my video to program type II Motorola and GRE ( Grecom of america) and uniden both make scanners for radioshack
TheEchoAlpha 6 months ago
@nightstringers umm, Uniden makes RS's scanners, so I guess if you want to pay more for the Bearcat name feel free.

sucks tha nyc radio shacks don't sell portable scanners, base scanners, vhf radios n uhf radios
dmc081 2 years ago
y do people buy base scanners, go handheld
intemister 2 years ago
Are handhelds and trunkers different in any way besides the portability?
6Ott7 2 years ago
well, handhelds also have trunking and digital and all other features that base scanners have like gre psr 300
intemister 2 years ago
So its just an issue of convenience then pretty much right? Also, is there a way to break encryption to hear police activity?
6Ott7 2 years ago

Isn't TETRA for European use only? Do you live in Europe?
6Ott7 2 years ago
no no no , tetra is also coming to the us, i live in PAKISTAN the most beautiful country in the world, no offense to ur country
intemister 2 years ago
Would you be able to listen in on a p25 or apco 25 frequency with a hand held scanner? I know you can t with TETRA, but is it different from p25?
6Ott7 2 years ago
yea absolutely, it is very different, p 25 is much less harder to intercept
intemister 2 years ago
Is that a Flip Ultra camera I see reflecting on the scanner screen?
Nice Scanner.
