However if you ever want to go through the barrel thing, all you have to do is go up and down on the control pad. See the Carnival Night Zone Short from "Sonic Shorts Volume 6."

See, there were no visual clues or instructions on how to control the barrel, it appeared to be an obstacle and nothing more.

The fact that the object bobs up and down with momentum from your jumping lead people to believe that was the correct way to get past it.

Is it possible? Actually, yes it is, though remarkably difficult.

It just goes to show how little creative thinking power the majority of kids have/had. the trick is to jump onto the barrel and use the momentum by pressing and holding down when the barrel is falling down, and up when it is bouncing back up. thats how you get it low enough to jump down the next level, but be careful not to let it smash you into the ceiling!!
