  • Excellent call. Far superior to Tom Durkin's.

  • I'll admit, Durkin's call wasn't that good- but you gotta love that when he finally figured it out, his call of "MINE THAT BIRD!!!!, AN IMPOSSIBLE RESULT!!!!" did sum it up for handicappers.

  • For those who don't realize it, this is the simulcast feed that went out to other tracks, OTB's and such. The camera work won't have that standard twin spires shot because it is filmed as a regular race without dressing up for the home audience. In the same way, those of us who were there heard this call over the public address system, not Durkin's call.

Please note that the video was posted by CDI-- Churchill Downs International. They post all their replays on YouTube.

  • Perfect call done by announcer in Churchill Down in Kentucky Derby..He call Mine the Bird last after the backstrech then after the Homestrech He Call Mine the Bird First 4x.. at least He did a good Job!

  • Caller is Britains Mark Johnson who could be often heard at Stratford.

  • Brilliant race call, I am so glad to see this after suffering through the crap that NBC foisted on us with Tom Drunkin.

Only quibble is the way Johnson never said "Kentucky Derby" even at the beginning he said Derby 135...but that is a minor point, he called everything else perfectly

  • I think the Kentucky Derby is the "Derby" like the British Open is often just called "The Open."

  • I was expecting "Kentucky Derby 135 presented by Yum! Brands"

  • Not only was the call better, but the camerawork was too. I like how it didn't change angles and used a split screen so that you don't lose the horse when you try and follow it with your eyes.

  • I still miss the traditional shot of the Twin Spiers as the horses entered the Clubhouse turn. Otherwise, you are correct.

  • Nice race call, way better than T. Durkin's call on NBC. He even called from last to first MTBird wins.. Correct finish orders throughout the field PrnoftheNile, MusktMan, PClem, ChcltCandy, and SumrBird..Great video.

  • mine that bird might really be something special, we'll see after the preakness

  • Great call. You sir should be promoted in place of that NBC announcer.

  • Way better call. NBC announcer should be fired.

  • Have you heard the assclowns NBC gets to call women's gymnastics during Worlds and the Olympics? It's fucking painful. We call them "the unholy trinity" for a reason.

  • For that NBC was fired of the Breeders Cup, the Breeders Cup AND ALSO the Triple Crown needs a channel with world-caliber camera shots, announcer and interviews. Great call by Mark Johnson.

  • The Breeder's Cup is on ESPN but I am not sure about the Triple Crown. What did NBC do to get fired?

  • When I downloaded the race on Real Player & saw who it was that BUMPED FF, I could not believe it. I am not a happy race fan!

  • Well you shouldn't download it. It's there copyright and you might be performing copyright infringement or something so immediately get rid of the downloaded video.

  • I disagree. This is, I think, owned by Churchill Downs Incorporated, so better watch out...

  • I like Borel and Mine That Bird just fine, I just feel so bad for Friesan Fire and Larry Jones. What a way to go out. I think Friesan Ffire can DEF. come back in the Preakness if he's healed from his injury in time.

  • fantastic run!

  • Awesome. What a come-frm-behind!!

( This announcer much better to listen to throughout )

  • I've heard better race calls, but this is far and away better than the stammering muddle that the NBC guy did. Better camera work too. Why oh why don't the networks just pick up the track call and video?

This guy actually noticed some things, like a horse changing leads when he ran up on heels, and another that was tiring ("under a ride"). A better announcer would have picked up on the eight-horse's move going round the turn.

  • What a fantastic move by Mine That Bird, and what a call by Mark Johnson!

  • As a horse racing fan, I totally agree.

As a Tom Durkin fan, I reluctantly agree.

    Props to MJ.
