You could pretty much do the same thing to that can of water with a 30-06 and any flavor of 165 gr to 220 gr bullet. Yes the 375 H+H is good cartridge, but for the most part its either on the light side for things like Cape Buffalo, it works for that or its to much gun to lug around when an lighter rifle will due. Its dose well enough if you can shoot it well. Most can learn to. I think the 375 Ruger in the M-77 African is a very nice package to carry and hunt with.
I want to choose a weapon, for EVERYTHING, but between these 3 calibers. WM 338, 375 HH, 375 WBY, I saw that the 375 is the best choice because it is more powerful, but also said that HH amo in the WBY is more slow ... what you think? the 375 WBY can shoot cartridges of the HH? and the 375 Ruger? fires HH amo? Do not even know what to choose ... I want to kill all strong, but with a variety of ammunition ($) in all countries including Africa. What do you think? tanks
@losteden .375 H&H ammo is apparently very widely available throughout Africa: it has been used there since 1912 and is the minimum legal calibre for a lot of dangerous game. It kills everything and is a very sensible choice.
@Lurch1858 but 375 of the gauges, what to choose? HH, ruger, WBY ...? the ruger seems stronger than the HH, the rifle ruger fire cartridges HH? thanks
@losteden I have no first-hand knowledge of those other cartridges. My understanding is that the straight .375 calibres are completely different to the .375 H&H and are less powerful, but you should do your own research online.
@dalmanation this this gun does not kick as hard as you would think, as far as cheaper i dont know about that you can get prvi partizan for 25.00 a box of 20 and just reload it.
@lilticklez A 243 is plenty for a whitetail. A 375 is too much gun really. I'm not sure about the RUM but I shot a Buffalo with a 375 h&h mag and dropped it in it's tracks.
@CoolLikePenguinNuts Actually we use 375's for everything in Alaska from large bear, Moose, Sitka Black tail deer , Caribou, the 375's do less meat damage than any High Velocity cartridge
Light skin and light bone animals the 375's just punch in and out holes the size of the bullet with bruising about 3 inches in diameter, no more !
I feel really comfortable when one of my Hunting clients comes to Alaska with 375's.
@CoolLikePenguinNuts the RUM is even crazier than the H&H, ive fired both and the RUM generated an insane ammount of recoil, borderline unpleasant thats for sure
@nenbran actually that cartridge is amazing for deer last year my brother and I went out, he was carrying his .300 winmag and i had my 375. the .300 winmag destroyed the meat the projectile just exploded inside the animal, but that would be situational because in missouri its hard to do a hunt outside of 75 yards maybe 100 if your lucky and the 375 does great it has a hard punch for good knockdown for the not so accurate hunter.
@nenbran Not as overkill as any of the .300s are, or 7mm super duper mags. the .375 h&h with it's bigger slower moving round will destroy less meat than the before mentioned hydrostatic nightmares..... With heavier rounds and not hitting bone i've noticed my .375 h&h makes cleaner wounds on whitetail than the 7mm-08 I used to own did. The .375 h&h will be the only cartridge i ever need or own because of this. The only deciding factor is if you can handle the recoil or afford shooting it.
@alittlecountry09 Obviously it depends on what bullets are being used, and how much powder is behind them. I understand my factory loads are doing about 2700 fps, and there are many different .375 H&H cartridges available which will do less or more with lighter or heavier bullets, giving different results when they hit (and then it also depends on what they are hitting). Obviously the right cartridge should be used for a particular application.
@Lurch1858 Im a self-loader, obviously i understand ballistic characteristics. In orger to slow down the 375. slug to a reasonable whitetail cartridge, you'd have to be shooting something like a 350gr bullet, and that would just blow clean through. You can take down a whitetail with a 223. effectively, im just saying anything bigger than a 308. on a whitey is drastic overkill.
243 is minimum is Australia.A 270 will do for most hunting here,no bears, moose or big stuff like that. But go for a 7mm Mag or better for Buffalo up in the cape.
Get the S&W .500 Magnum, thats what it was designed for grizzly bear defense... BLAM! if you dont hit the bear it will surely be scared from the sound...
a 22lr could ce a bear defence gun, you need to think about placement. you won't always have to kill the animal but to fend it off, a .22 or .17hmr would be fine. if your looking to kill it then go for a 270 or a 7mm magnum for the minimum or just go ahead with a 30-06 1 300 winmag or one of these massive 375 H&H magnums
Clearly you haven't seen a pissed off bear, which is what a .22 long rifle or .17 will get you. Bear spray is way more effective than either of those if your "fending off a bear and not killing it" Have fun with those two though.... Let us know how they work on bear some time, I'll stick with my .375 or .338
@JtsGreene I saw my nieghbor shot at racoon up in Palm Tree in Florida with 22 and that S.O.B. drop down on the ground and jumped up and bit him on the arm..I wish i had my camera it would have been on Utube..The Racoon ran in the woods across the st. Fuck that!
I have not tried the 9.3x64mm brenneke. I know there is a number of guns with the same or greater power than the .375 H&H, but they're not all widely available here. I also now have all the power I need!
ok. well you're right about the .375h&h, i read somewhere that it has enough power to kill an african bull elephant which is even more massive than the tyrannosaurus rex.
I'm afraid I don't know anything about fibreglass/synthetic .375 H&Hs (apart from seeing the Browning in the shop). It's a flat-shooting round which I understand is good for 400-500 metres, but obviously it depends what you're shooting at as to how effective it will be at greater ranges. It retains its power for a long distance.
cant recall if i have shot this round without earplugs, i bet it would ring your ears a lot. i use to have Model 70 winchester 375H&H mag. had top of the line ammo for it. ive read its only marginal for elephant.
I certainly wouldn't advise firing this without hearing protection! As for it being marginal for elephant, I understand blokes like Pondoro Taylor used it exclusively on them and although there are many more powerful calibres around now, not all of them are better.
Marginal for elephants? Maybe compared to some of the overpowerd cartridges available today but tell that to all the jumbo's that have fallen to the .375. With the right bullet put in the proper place it will cleanly kill anything we can hunt.
Makes sense. I read that African game laws require a "minimum caliber" of .375 when on Safari. My hunting buddy had a .375 H&H. Shot it a few times but chose an 8mm Rem Mag (which is a .375 cartridge necked down to .323). Both kick like mules. I used it for carribou and moose in AK.
Many areas require a .37 cal minimum. Some require .40 cal, 8mm rem is excellent for big game... Its too bad it never caught on enough. The legal minimum for deere to the guy above is .222 Cal respectively, a .223 works well, but it is illegal to use 22 LR, hornet, .17 etc.
Holy fuck so thats what my Uncle hunts with, i remember as a younger boy after i just got my license, my uncle had ammo for a .375 and im like how powerful is that. No wonder he never has to trail deer
safety is definitely the first priority. i was just wondering how it performed against armor. i have the heads of 5 bucks hanging on the garage wall, all taken with a 22-250. i haven't had a chance to shoot the .375 h&h, but it sure looks like a serious round.
I know the .22-250 can do the job on small deer, but over here .270 is the legal minimum calibre for deer. I haven't found too many armoured animals yet, so that's probably why I haven't tested the .375 H&H against armour!
what slugs are you pooting in your...........22 250? i would think if you got some....... v max slugs or somthing that exploads use some fool metal jackets and use the hotest charge. it will go up to like 4200ft per secont but i think its like a 40gr slug you use to make it go that fast you gys are probibly using 50 or 55gr and i bet its only charged up to like 3500ft per secont or less try dooing it with difernt charges and slugs.
The .22-250 which failed to go through a plastic container of water was a 55 grain bullet. I don't remember the speed, but it's a Winchester factory round and I think it's something like 3,300-3,500 fps. I want my barrel to last more than 1,000 rounds so I have no interest in cranking it up over 4,000 fps, and the round I am using does all the jobs I ask it to do!
i used my 375 to kill a deer because when it was hunting seson my 30-06 was damaged so i just used the 375 it was a clean hole and wasnt meat destructive as many people think
More like 3 of those. Water has an extremely high kinematic viscosity that really puts bullets to a stop. At some point deceleration is inversely proportional to the bullet's velocity. Believe it or not a shotgun using bird-shot loads out-penetrates a .50 BMG bullet in water.

They get exited when the guns come out, which is often. I think they're actually noisiest just before the shots are fired, and quiet afterwards! They love it.
They must be quiet because their ears are ringing :) .375H&H has over 4263 f/p of power which means like hitting a square foot of space with a Mercedes.
