Yep after this, Tony Harris is definitely the Black Bill O'Reilly. I wish he had a different name. And w/ that, I'll leave you w/ a quote: "From an extroverted point of view, I think it's too late. Hip Hop hasn't been the same since '88. Ever since it's become a lucrative profession, there's a common misconception that a movement in any direction is progression...Nobody gives a fuck no more. No one goes to the book store ever since the influence of Moore's law...." (Canibus, Poet Laureate II)
Confederate, you say whites and Christians need too give this up? So does that mean black people can't have family values, and Muslims deserve to burn in hell?
If you call yourself a Christian, then how can you exclude some people due to color and religion?
I agree that this music is bad for people, and gives them the wrong ideas, but still, you cant just say whites and Christians, because that's racist, and almost as bad as this music itself.
As usual you are dead on! Thank you for telling the truth about hip hop. Regular folks and Christians need to give up hip hop music & culture. It is like a cancer in our community. The last positive hip hop song was like in 199? Young people absorb this negative music like a sponge. I am a teacher and they can't spell anything thanks to hip hop culture and text messaging!
I want to do a video on handwriting. Do you see that as a problem among your students? I personally hate the handwriting of most High School children in NY. Sometimes I think I am reading scribbles from 3 year olds.
Now, I'm not black, I'm mexican but I can still relate to this. It's not necessarily referring to black people but people that like me who grow up in these communities where you're pressured to do drugs and and join gangs, committ crimes etc.
Lil john tells me skeet on girls. Katt williams says i should be a pimp. and people are pissed off because they're told to read a book........Another WTF moment.
I understand how the video can be offense, but if it wasn't this way it wouldn't have got your attention. I've listen to many Positive artist, and i like the messages in their lyrics.Perhaps, "READ A BOOK" is the answer. Maybe we should stop being Nice about Positive changes.
I refuse to watch BET, and I find some of the recent additions to their programming line-up to be nothing more than internalized racism masking as educational satire.
Soulja Boy is another one hit wonder trust me, I don't even consider that a song or dance, Don't worry we all saw what happened 2 chicken noodle soup, 2 step, part like a rock star and many more ALL ONE HIT WONDERS
all i have to say, since i can't listen to the audio because i am at work, is that soulja boy is wack. the only reason he is anything is because all of those hoochies who want to blow his rod. no lyrical content whatsoever.
Tony Harris is a complete idiot no make that a complete ass. The video was a satire joke and further more is a sad truth. The music video has a point and the reporter should be happy that someone took a bold stand. People have go to claim back hip hop and have songs with various meanings. Life is of complication but rap has been abused and dumb down in an unrealistic way.
Tony Harris is he is like the black O'reily son of a bitch the next generation is doomed 2 many people attack the wrong things instead of them fixing the problem they wanna make it grow and prosper AL Sharpton, Jesse Jackson, all them so-called black leaders are outta touch and those rich and upper class black people are 2 as well, I love Oprah but I think she is just as much as outta touch as them because her show only caters to white people she don't focus on serious issues
Tony Morris is sadly doesn't have a clue. He's attacking the langauge and Bomani's street cred ("...I heard you didn't know what crunk meant..."). The langauge is unfortunately they way hiphop kids speak. It may be necessary to relate to them in ways acceptable to their culture. Chris Rock and Bill Cosby have made similar statement to Bomani's in ways that get across to different segments of society.
The cultural revolution that must take place will just require repackaging and delivering the same message repeatly in this way. I don't expect one song to have much of an effect, but I would be interested in seeing how hiphop kids would respond to 10 years of media programming similar to the content of "Read a book."
On second thought: Tony Morris may be surrounding the song and the artist the controversy that seems to be a prerequisite to popularity (at least in US culture). If he's doing this unwittingly, he's a useful idiot. If he's assisting Bomani in this way intentionally then he's just keen and deserves his props.
The sad truth is that all my students(who are all deep South blacks) know this song, but when I tell them that I don't watch TV because I don't have time and I don't have cable, they look at me like I'm insane.
And they still wont read a book. Unless it's Zane.
I can't believe that this is actually a song. If someone wanted to help educate the younger generation there are ways to do it without swearing, or unecessary words.
The sadest part of all of this, is rapper today KNOW what they are doing wrong. Too bad none of them want to take the time to fix it. They are all too worryed about making money, even if it means selling out to there own people.
The raper who performs this song does not swear excessively in his real music. He was only trying to make a joke of what rap music has become. Unlike the illiterate rappers who only make those type of songs, he is a teacher and very well spoken.
And you can see how ignorant BET execs are by playing a video that completely parodies there content....they don't understand satire. They couldn't look beyond the hook and the beat.
I have to agree and since rap as become more typical I listen to less and less of it as I drifted to more rock genres and older R&B. But Bomani really has some good songs. And I'm not against some curseing if the intention is good. When I look atr music I want all emotions to be conveyd from good to bad but sadly rap has gone mostly down a one way street. But if you look hard enough their is still good rap it just hard to come pass.
its so stupid because..when i first saw the video my first impression was like "FINNALLY!"
It's not only the msg that really got me going it was the way he made it sound. Doing the lil jon empression and making crunk chants..it was right because ppl respond too that because they see it ever day on t.v.
Hiphop is dead there..are no role models no classocs no leaders nooo skilllll at all. Everything is about the money now.
I agree w/ you as far as the music industry standards is concerned. But I think before saying Boycott B.E.T. I think more energy should be focused on Boycotting Viacom/CBS Corporation. This is the company that gives a green light on what gets played, and what's "too intelligent for the BET audiece" (Notice: Tavis Smiley's talk show was canceled after it was sold to VIACOM).

how can you complain about Read a Book, but not videos like Lollipop, low, sexy lady, or amusement park?

With a name like "Confederate" its hard to believe he is not trying to be racist by saying something that stupid.

This comment has received too many negative votes show
Whites, Christians, any one who still might have a sense in family values, needs to stay away from this music and its culture.

Most of my middle school students' handwriting is pretty good. It mainly the spelling. They are clueless on how to spell correctly.
