  • Getz did get Jobim better than anyone except Sinatra

  • wish I were at the au-go-go for this but I was only 6.

  • beautiful timeless tranquilizer. Thanks.

  • Beautiful!

  • ...I believe this version was on the "Getz Au Go Go" album from 1964....I like all the versions out there, but this one is killer....

  • Adoro essa música!!!

  • Dig the mix! Only analog can ever sound this great!

  • I remember this from Soap opera Lacos de familia My grandma and I used to watch it many many years ago.And that was when I fell in love with Brasil.

  • I love this version. Her voice is so soothing I love it.

  • I was fortunate to be brought up in a home that was full of music from all over the world. My mother was very appreciative of all music and culture. I've loved Brazilian music from the first time I heard it as a child. I must have be 5 or 6. Then, of course, along came Sergio Mendes when I was a bit older and listening to music on the radio in the 60s.

  • I love this Brazilian music even if I don't understand what he,she, they are singing about.

  • love this version than the original version..

  • A fantastic version! I need to add this to my IPOD.

  • I have nothing to say. It seems like all the comments have spoken what I wanted to say about her. Amazing singer. Someone said genius is a person who sings or plays one note and you already know who they are. That is what Astrud is... simply genius...

  • this is so beautiful is brings tears to my eyes! no music is better than this!!!

  • fuck modern jazz.... no body can play a beautiful melody like stan getz...

  • @iliketowrekalot Fuck modern jazz? Fuck you.

This is great, but jazz continues to evolve.

  • Una de las piezas inmortales en ritmo de bossa nova. A dónde se fue la verdadera creatividad?.....

  • The Brazilian music is a world cultural heritage :)

  • @kimchiezz

I'm 60 years old and as good as married, and I still have such visions ...

In fact, my fiancee' and I are going to Rio next week. Wish me luck (especially if she finds this post).

  • My personal favorite. Astrud Gilberto's breezy style of singing is incomparable!

  • huehue

  • best version

  • ;"believing only life a bitter tragic joke, i found with you the meaning of existence, o my love" That line takes my breath away and add to that Getz on Sax and Astrud on vocal, makes for one of my alltime favorites. Prefer it to the 4minutes plus version, sung as a duet, imHo , MaxPhiladelphia

  • Wow, that girl sings perfectly in both English and Portuguese. What is she? Brazilian or American?

  • @matazap

She's Brazilian. But has spent most of her life in the US and has called herself an "Americanized Brazilian".

She came to the US in her early 20's with her then husband Joao Gilberto to do the 1963 Getz/Gilberto album (which contains the original "Corcovado"; the version here was recorded a few months later). She's lived in the US ever since (except for a year or so when she lived in Rio in the 70's). She knew English before coming to the US; I think she knows at least 4 languages.

  • @matazap

    Brazilian!

  • que musica mas suave y da mucha tranquilidad al alma.

  • FIrst two words that come to mind when heaing this music is...sultry and sexy.... WOW! Wish this style of music could make its way back into the music scene, not likely though........(sigh)........... what i would give to listen to something even similar live

  • Heard This...,

    & Named My Daughter Astud...,

Looks Like Her Too but Li'l!!!!

  • Chaps,

mea culpa - when I said Getz/Gilberto I meant the duo, not the specific album. I had both records in Paris in '67 and prefer the '63 version. It still sounds contemporary today (though then it was practically revolutionary. Getz is/was an exceptionally talented musician).

  • Urbanstrut...

You may enjoy Stan's mastery of the sax here..

    Enjoy.

  • Will we ever get back to being classy San Diego?

  • Not on what original release? I seem to remember exactly this version on the Getz/Gilberto album I had back in the mid-sixties...

  • @markrevelle1 This version of Corcovado was recorded a few months later after the Getz/Gilberto (1963) album the original was on. This version is on the Getz au Go Go (1964) album recorded at the venerable Greenwich Village venue, the Café Au Go Go, in mid-August of 1964.

  • @markrevelle1

No, this version is from the "Getz au Go Go" album.

The Getz/Gilberto version (the "original release") starts slow, and has Astrud singing only the opening verse, accompanied only by a few piano chords (courtesy of Jobim). From that point on, Joao and Getz take over the rest of the song.

    See watch?v=x00lwS6lxeQ

  • don't think I've ever heard a sax played quite like Stan does.brilliant!!

  • @brabazon10 Stan Getz has always been my favorite, however when I was in Cuba (Varadero) there was a tenor sax player and a keyboard guy that came every evening at 11:00pm to play for 1 hr in the hotel bar - I was absolutely spellbound, if you blinfolded me and said it was Stan, I would believe you - no question ! he told me he could not leave Cuba and also could not easily get sheet music ! what a sad waste of talent. His name was Rodriguez but I forget hais last name.

  • @voldpilot most probably his last name was Rodriguez. you forgot his given name ;P

  • Stan Getz from the Prez school of saxaphone playing.Very rare these days to get any jazz improviser to play as natural over any of the styles from cool to hard and post bop.

The ultimate test try and get to hear a local pro or top pro withinn a short time frame, playing the same tune several times or more.

That tells the story about the player.

  • so beautiful..

  • V from V for Vendetta's favorite song :D

  • I need the tunes of this song for flute&guitar. Who can provide it to me?

  • Wow - this stands the test of all time.

  • Man Stan Getz was the best......I remember when girl from Ipanema came out on radio.....I was 17...... I had visions of going to South America to find this tall and tan and dark lovely girl

  • Give me Gilberto and Getz any time! What a sexy sound... I once saw her perform in London, she arrived nearly 2 hours late, but boy did she deliver!

  • this is definitely not the elevator music that kenny g is!

  • hello everybody, i just wanna know whats the name of this woman, i only know she sings in the album with joao gilbert, so, can anybody tell me what´s the name of the singer please? :)

  • @juanitoye : This is written, the singer is Astrud Gilberto

  • @juanitoye This is Astrud Gilberto singing... she has a beautiful voice!

  • Like No. 2413 ; ]

  • how you rememberme my first love!!!

  • magnificent! Her voice and his plush sax are made for each other

  • That unique, smooth and beautiful combination of voice, sax and sound that can only be captured by artists of this magnitude! A haunting performance that remains within forever.

  • Make a million dollars and kick back and listen to this for the rest of your life!!!

  • Both Astrud Gilberto and the Bossa Nova are Brazil's gifts to the world. Thank you for both Brazil ! !

  • A S T R U D G I L B E R T O

  • ....discrente desse mundo..... :o)

  • astrud did several things with him ,......... i think he also did girl from impanema with her for witch she won a grammy .....i think it was song or record of the year

  • Astrud is poetry...a beautiful woman, simplicity with flashes of jazz, in the portuguese. be the love of the one who thinks of you, in Corcovado. thanks for the post.

  • Maravilhosa. Amo!!!!

  • beautiful lyrics

  • Olivia Ong sings it nice too.

  • I could listen to these two forever and not get bored. And I have a master's in music. This is high art. And for the record they're playing cheesy remakes of Rod Stewart and Air Supply in elevators nowadays....

  • Stan Getz I am familiar with but, Astrud Gilberto I am not. Did she sing with him on a regular basis? I am just taken by this work. I have heard various versions of the song over the past 45 years but, I don't remember this one.

  • please..this is not elevator song... this is a classic greats..a class of its own.

  • Awesome!

  • the best! Obrigado!

  • Just type ELEVATOR MUSIC in the dialog box and see what you get...actualy the description of ELEVATOR MUSIC is not made in a denigrating/derogatory manner...it's refered to as BEAUTIFUL, SOFT, RELAXING music; not bad at all!. The name given is still bad though. They should call it SENSUAL/EXQUISITE instead.

  • love love and more love from Holland

  • BRAZILIAN MUSIC RULES !!!!!

  • mind blowing

  • Obrigato for sharing such a lovely song!

More than forty years ago, I'd listened to this album and felt so free.

It fred me from the reality and I felt Brazilian breeze I'd never been.

Her voice was so soft and pure that taught me Bosa Nova is whispering softly.

What a gift from Brazil !!!

  • Tuskin upeampaa musiikkia tulee

  • Astrud had the most amazing intonation without using vibrato. I was knocked out when I first listened to her sing in the mid '60s and was immediately in love.

  • This version of Corcovado was originally released on the Stan Getz/Astrud Gilberto concert album "Getz au Go Go", which is available on CD today. That album includes the audience applause (the applause is usually stripped away whenever this version of the song is released on the various Getz or Astrud compilation albums).

Of course, Astrud's 1st version of Corcovado is on the classic Getz/Gilberto album.

  • @BigSleepyOx I guess you are the one I shouldbe asking, what is this classy called, I love, love, it! Lounging around the house by oneself and drinking wine and doing idle things, music that make you feel pretty.

  • "until the final flicker of life's ember...."

Who can write like this these days?

  • well said sempermerde. very well said.

  • Have love this for decades

  • This would be so awesome

  • The supreme interpreter of Antonio Carlos Jobim and of Latin music.

  • I like this because it's Astrud's voice and Getz only. Except, I don't hear the desire in her voice as in the other one.

  • Probably the best female voice for this song.

  • Funny, I got 141 likes on my first comment about elevator music...

  • I am just going to sit back and enjoy the song for the umpteenth time. Astud's voice...makes you want to float on and on.

  • Very Romantic.

  • There's something great about being in the house on my own on a sunday, selfish please myself time, balcony and windows open, phone off, stereo on, lunchtime drinkys, maybe a smoke or two, lazy day bliss.....................

  • i love her version of this song the best

  • 眠れない夜に最高!

  • This is a masterpiece, Stan Getz is one of the most respected sax player around the world. It doesnt mater where you listen to this music, elevator or in a night club, still is a great music.

  • If they played this music in elevators there'd be alot more babies conceived in elevators...

  • @MsTubbytube In Serbian elevators most appropriate would be Carmina Burrana, since it's very dramatic moment.

  • para todos que gostaram: watch?v=W6hEHSy_J3g

  • Haha This is one elevator I would want to be stuck in for eternity!

  • amazing......too much elegance!.....

  • Love it! = )

  • One day I will gamble, drink, flirt and drive in the cote d´azur to this music. . . one day that is.

  • you guys never will get that feeling as we got in yearly 60-s when Stan's introdused Astrud and Joao to the rest of the world! it happened same time with the beattles and R'N'Roll-mania in their peak. Bossanova was a real terra-incognita and everybody loved Astrud without comparing with Ella Fitzgerald.

  • @theLSJM no..we're never going to ever get that feeling or experience but i definitely like the feeling/experience i'm getting listening to it right now

  • well... yes, it resembles the "elevator music", but the elevators use this kind of music because it's so damn relaxing, anyways beautiful music, and I mean -beautiful-

  • What MORON called this "elevator music"? What an idiot. I'm guessing that said individual relishes rap and hip hop.

  • @Shubael1809 I'm the one that made a reference to the FACT that this kind of music (which i love very much) is called ELEVATOR MUSIC in the United States. I'm trully amazed that no one here knows that!!!. I've been in the Hollywood area for the last 41 years; i love instrumentals by: Mantovani, Ray Conniff, 101 Strings, The Indios Tabajaras, The Masters of Brasil...every time I play my music, people reffer to it as "Elevator Music" all of the time!!. I'm not kidding.

  • @bvb7589 I'm very familiar with the phrase "elevator music" as it is generally a pejorative for the very music you describe. Percy Faith, Mantovani, Kostelanetz, Conniff, Montenegro, etc. I love the music, and if you love it, you don't care that some refer to it as "elevator music." (An old girlfriend told me that John Lennon, no less, love that type of music himself, as he appreciated the beauty of it.)

  • @bvb7589 Those you mention; Ray Connif, 101 Strings, Mantovani ARE "elevator music" and aren't in the same league on any level with Getz/Gilberto.

  • I like Bossa Nova and Hip Hop O_o

  • I'm going to Brazil!

  • Lounge Lizards unite! Great music period.

  • People who say this is elevator music are truly dead inside with untrained ears that cannot pick up vibrations of beauty but theres no point in arguing with them they wont ever understand just like the texan donkey from family guy hahaha

  • I just love this song - one of my favourites - thanks for posting! HUGE thumbs up!!!

  • great ! delightful to listen to !

  • do they even play music in elevators anymore ?

  • shit just got real

  • Its a beautiful song, just enjoy the music

  • Anyone who calls this 'elevator music' does not know music.

  • @moosey62 May i prepare a nice matrini for you? I am agent double o zero.

  • lovely

  • I like this rendition a lot ... Astrud is classic ...

  • Where were you when I needed you?

  • i have a really nice version on my channel

  • Pataphysician- Dig Man, the book wouldn't help- I doubt they can read. Can't even use the old, "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder" as the world has devolved in consciousness, taste and class to where people think Am.Idol is real music!...it isn't a mystery to me how this depraved state of condition has happened.Sadly though, nothing can be done about it- except by those of us who are still putting Wes Montgomery, Jobim and Miles Davis on the turntable tonight.

  • They stopped playing this good stuff on elevators. Now it's crap like Celine Dion. Oops sorry, she's at least got some talent. I guess it's not Celine's fault there are no more Stan Getz's to accompany her.

If you really want some premium elevator music watch my playlist-

'Organ Tunes even Organ Haters will love!'

  • I anyone offers me a stirred Martini, you're dead.

    BR

    007

  • Es inegable la calidad de la musica brasileña y de sus compositores como de los interpretes, en este caso una voz tan agradable, la de Astrud

  • Very Nice, you won't see this quality on American Idol.

  • This music warms my soul.

  • In Poland, it is said to such a state of mind in which makes me Astrud "seventh heaven" certainly well known in the world is such a term and that's how I feel listening to every Brazilian Bossa Nova and it sings Astrud Joao Gilberto and Stan Getz especially in the background.

  • LOL Who are the 9 losers who disliked this???

  • @Wolf8x2 Argentinians...

  • @vcspider001 LOL

  • @vcspider001 Fuck You... Im ARGENTINIAN and i Love and play the Music.... You fucking moron

  • lo que es un sonido suave. no se puede pedir para una voz con más fuerza

  • she is so cute, back in the days I would have fallen in love with her

  • I was taught that it is better to hold your tongue and be thought a fool than to open your mouth and remove all doubt. If you can't say something positive, it's probably that you do not understand it - so let it be. Putting the music down is a way of walling yourself off from other people. Find something you like and share it with people of a like mind. We have enough negativity in the world already.

  • @sempermerde , very well said!

  • @sempermerde I love this music. Love Astrud. Love the arrangement.

But if I didn't, I wouldn't hesitate to say so. That's what's so wonderful about YouTube, and about the United States of America. A multiplicity of viewpoints is welcome in the marketplace.

  • Stan Getz had this great breath expression, a nice match for her style and phrsing. This is the definition of sublime.

  • Great Stuff

  • I really like this arrangement. Fuck I wish it was as long as the other one.

  • i dont really mind when people call this elevator music. That way when people ask me what type of music i like, i can just say elevator music.

  • @georgica303 I agree 1000% then they think im dark and complex, just like a K constantiople hi bell dry ride.

  • @georgica303 I agree with ya, man!! This is some pretty damn good elevator music!

  • Wow... this is BEAUTIFUL =)

  • I would never get off the elevator ...!

  • i love it

  • Fuck that "elevator music" bullshit! This is Bossa Nova- derived from jazz and Brazilian folk music, anyone who calls this "Elevator music" Is an ignoramus. Get a book on music and LEARN.

  • @pataphysician66 Well, it certainly gives me a LIFT.......chuckle chuckle.....no i love this really...just being silly!!!

  • @pataphysician66 yeah, and also grab a heart and star to feel!

  • @pataphysician66 What do you think gets turned into elevator music....there go and share that with your friends

  • @thecrankyangel Uh , yeah, I know that "elevator music" is hardly original and doesn't pretend to be....The point of elevator music is to use music that is familiar to everyone. Think Ray Coniff (whom I personally like).

  • @thecrankyangel Uh , yeah, I know that "elevator music" is hardly original and doesn't pretend to be....The point of elevator music is to use music that is familiar to everyone, and is therefore unchallenging- it is supposed to be. Think Ray Coniff (whom I personally like).

  • @thecrankyangel No shit Sherlock. Thanks for enlightening me. There's MUCH worse crap out there nowadays-shit that glorifies money and bitch-slapping hos, and much worse like Katie Perry and Rachel Black, and the lip-synch queen of plagiarized crap Lady CaCa.

  • @pataphysician66 Oh sweetie, you should share less. This is just not your thing. Take a deep breath and get a life.

  • @thecrankyangel No Shit Sherlock. Thanks for enlightening me. Even "elevator music" is a thousand times better than the dreck out there today- shit that glorifies money and bitch-slapping hos, plus Katie Perry and godawful Rachael Black, and the lip-syincing queen of plagiarism Lady Ca Ca, let alone the so called

    "New school" "Punk" bands.

  • @pataphysician66 Kindly don't shit on Lady Ga Ga. Sure.. dislike her style and her music but NEVER neglect to see behind the superflous crap to the TREMENDOUS individual who is a major player for the struggle for human rights. In this she uses her celebrity to the greatest purpose and she does so with complete and utter precision and candor.

  • @Shubael1809 Yeah she likes to show her "compassion" by charging thousands of dollars for the privilege of seeing her lip-synch. They all do including Madonna. Although what she does is commendable- that is not the point. She is still a big fraud who makes millions by ripping people off. And her music sucks. If you want candor, take a look at Grace Jones.

  • @pataphysician66 Hey! Asshole! Astrud's the best of them all. I don't give a flying fuck what you think of her behavior in concert. I think she's the best out there. Capisce? Last I knew I was allowed to perfer one singer over another. Now shut the fuck up and keep still. And Madonna's the FRAUD and has ZERO singing talent. Must we go to the STONE AGE to access Grace Jones?? For all her campy looks and style she can't sing her way out of a wet paper bag.

  • @Shubael1809 WHOO- what a misunderstanding! I was talking about Lady Ga Ga, Astrud is a brilliant singer. I love her music, I am 100% a fan of Astrud GIlberto. You should read before you start calling people "asshole" Madonna is a fraud- AND in the Madonna/Lady CaCa genre- Grace Jones really started it all and she was MUCH better than Madonna or L.C.C.What's this shit about the "Stone Age?" Astrud GIlberto predates Grace Jones ( I repeat DIFFERENT GENRE) by about twenty years!

  • @pataphysician66 Sorry for any confusion on either of our parts. I'm fully aware of who Grace Jones is and what age she is (including the time frame in which she was most "in"). And say what you will about Lady Ga Ga. Her heart's in the right place and she uses her celebrity to promote human rights. Beats the hell out of rap and hip hop homophobic crap.

  • @Shubael1809 agreed- but Ca Ca sucks musically. There is no soul there. All flash & cooch. I also dislike Rap and most current hip hop. A lot of self aggrandizing homophobic shit. I'm sure GaGa is a good mensch, but I am talking about artistic integrity. It's all corporate run dreck. They are cranked out , and the lip synching pop tarts are following Madonna's lead. I find it boring and depressing. Nothing new, but at least , the real stuff seeped through, and talent used to matter.
