I actually tried this and it worked out great. I grabbed my bible, a pair of scissors and started cutting. When I got finished, I had a heap of scraps in the bin, and two book covers. I glued the book covers to a couple of sticks, and they make dandy fly-swatters. The only useful thing I ever got from a Bible.

I'd have to agree with you, many denominations of christnaity, judism and islam use fear or threat of "scary place when you die" as a means of control. Sad that is has to boil down to "do this or I will cause you pain". Raising children under this idea only causes them to turn out as psycho's, not turn out better.

Many Christian denominations do NOT want to improve the lot of humanity. Improvement of the lot of humanity is NOT their stated purpose. All they want to do is to build their denomination, increase church attendance and get their members to adhere to their dogma. well to be honest and fair, if christianity only kept the good stuff, and the bible only talked about love and peace instead of burning and killing and infanticide etc religion would be a tool for good. It wouldnt necessarily validate its superstitious and paranormal claims to divinity, but it would certainly have less of a "stranglehold" on society and be less of a degenerative and negative force in the world.

What I meant was that there wouldn't be enough left to even recognize it as "religion". It wouldn't me much different than humanism or some sort of secular ethics. Religion without dogma and with only good stuff isn't really recognizable as religion.

depends on your biological sex I guess. I can only think he see penis-vagina as propper sex, even though a woman can not get off by thrusting alone (most women anyway) and the penis does not have a french tickler on it to hit the clitoris (which is the female equivilant to the head of the penis). A penis can fit into many oriphices, and a vagina can engulf many appendages.

I have some experience with southeast asian cultures and one of the obvious differences in Buddhism is the tolerance they display. But yes I specifically noted the "no greater or lessor.." because that does agree with my experience of buddhists. The general idea among buddhists is that gays should not be persecuted...a refreshing difference from the christians. dboy

Ah well I'm certainly no xian either but there is a thing called "mortal sins" which as I understand it, are sins that cannot be forgiven and will doom you to hellfire, unbelievable pain, suffering, and Beverly Hills 90210 re-runs for all eternity. It's hard to pin-down Buddhists on Dogma because the Buddha taught mostly meditation, not a set of beliefs. Not a religion in the *western* understanding. It's unique.
