  • it's a bass

  • @thoggi97 Yeah, a bass guitar. And I love it.

  • what r u using to spry that guitar

  • @123minislash Devilbis suction fed spray gun...spraying cellulose sealer then matt lacquer.

  • @billyfionamcm are they exspencive

coz im hoping to buy a build your own guitar kid and i just want it plain black so could i use ordinary spray paint

  • @123minislash yes can be expensive, you could use spray cans, with a little practice you can achieve a good finish.

  • @billyfionamcm like i just want a black guitar so what about the shine ?

  • @billyfionamcm What is used in the spray can at 0:59 ?

  • @RocketQueenBand201 Mylands cellulose sanding sealer.

  • can i paint the guitar with spray paint krylon and put an automotive clear on the guitar?

or will the diferent thinner damaged the guitar??

  • @evilguitar9430 Be careful when using different paints these can react together, or with the paint already on the guitar. Try a small area where it won't be seen first.

  • Is it easy to remove the parts of the guitar??

  • @rishabh6541 it's not too difficult, work slow, protect any paintwork, especially when using the soldering iron on electrical parts.

  • IM SPRAY PAINTING MY GUITAR!!! I NEED HELP... DO I NEED LAQUER? WOOD PRIMER!? WHAT PAINT DO I BUY??? I NEED SOME HELP GUYS/GIRLS!! PLEASE!!

I have a pacifica (black glossy) and i want to paint it matt black.

i understand i have to take everything off (IE. Pickups, knobs, pickguard etc.) but do i need to sand it, apply a finish what???

any help would be much appreciated!! :D

  • @Bfurness1 sand it, either to roughen up the paint, or down to bare wood(but this will probably take alot of time if laquered alot) then spray/ paintbrush on primer, sand down/ pick off imperections and then spray with final coat

    im no expert though

  • @Bfurness1 thnks a Bunch!! :D

  • @Bfurness1 How did the paint job go.

  • @billyfionamcm brilliantly, i did it ages ago... it looks amazing, everyone I play with / to has commented on how good it looks! it's getting a bit scratched up now because I had no Lacquer but it just adds to the rugged look.

    your video really helped me!

  • If want to see and hear this bass in action watch Gnatic performing their latest song Do U Care at:

  • How do you spray a guitar but not get the wood grain marks left over ? Because I made one and it has that ! can you please tell me !!!

  • @pugNdrum You need to use grain filler before painting OR you need to apply many coats of clear coat and always sand them lightly..

  • thet extractor fan is way too small !

  • how long do you wait between each coat?

  • @helpdonate1 depends on the paint you're using.. it should be mentioned

  • Can I paint a pattern on top of the paint that's already on my guitar?

  • @TheStudioSEB yes, but make sure the paint is compatible first. Try a small area that wont be seen, like under a pick-up.

  • how do u make a guitar have a sparkle paint to it

  • Spray lightly, not too wet with metallic or pearl paint,, wait till touch dry then spray with clear lacquer to give it the shine.

  • what kind of wood is the back made of ? the grain is pretty

  • @naruhina102 Swamp ash

  • Any light sanding between coats?

  • Yes...... always between coats.

  • @billyfionamcm with what grid do you sand the clear coats?

  • @kbkbabbie p800.... this is a british grit type.

  • @billyfionamcm does it 'shine' after that? I've got 400, 600 and 800 grit but my guitar is still dull...

  • @kbkbabbie I only use 800 between topcoats, once you spray the last coat leave to dry....if using cellulose lacquer leave for at least 3 weeks... longer if you can...you can either leave as it is or flatten with 1500-2000 grit then polish, either by hand or machine, buy good grade polish, microfibre cloths are good....dont rub through the finish.... especially the edges.

  • @billyfionamcm thanks man, I used spray cans for the clear coat, did 5 layers, and sanded in between with the 800. The only thing I have to do now is use the 2000 grit and polish. Thanks!

  • Also- do you have a drying room?

  • give the paint a little more time, you might have to redo it..... Bailey Guitars painting area is heat and moisture controlled.

  • I'm new to this whole world. I just bought a beautiful Olympic white Jazz bass solid wood no pick-guard. and I'm painting a solid metallic red racing stripe diagonal on it.

It's a bit tacky still - even after urethane. Any tips? :) thanks

  • Sorry - never mind, I missed the earlier comment where you said it was nitrocellulose. Very nice job on the guitar, by the way. I've only used water based auto lacquer applied via airbrush, and topped with urethane clear coat on the axes I'v built so far. My next one will be wood dye and nitrocellulose.

  • Urethane or nitrocellulose?

  • nitro

  • i have a question.... could you use a graffitti can for the layer painting ?

  • hey, i'm new to building guitars and i'm working on my first one. after i sprayed the clear coat on some newspaper got stuck on the guitar and i'm having a difficult time getting it off. i've tried using sandpaper but it just makes the paint around it worse. i was wondering if you had any ideas. (i'm also painting it on cardboard now which really helps)

  • try using white spirit and scotchbrite.... fine sand and repaint.

  • how long do you let it sit B4 2nd coat??? ... nice job.. I love it..!!!

  • wait till touch dry, sand, then spray

  • you can get purpose made scraper made of steel, or I have heard of people using broken glass, use the sharp edge.

  • dude. that is so sexy. what type of wood is that?

  • The body is swamp ash, the cap is walnut.

And I'm so happy with it!

  • Hey i want to refinish a guitar that doesnt have paint on, but just laquer i guess as it is a simple wood finish. To remove the laquer would I just sand?

Also, when stripeed i want tospray with a translucent white nitrocellulous paint. What would be the best way to tackle this spray job?

  • sand or scrape&sand ..put white into sealer until you get the right color, spray then lacquer over.

  • im repainting my guitar but its a junker epiphone strat so im jsut sanding the clear coat and painting over it....when i do this and spray primer n it..whats the best way to sand the primer..how many coats of primer etc..and i am doing it in satin white...

  • scuff it with red scotchbrite or sand it down with 320...then spray ur prime....about 2 coats...if no dings or any thing just a few such as 2 light hevy coats.....after dry sand with d.a or hand down with 320 just enough to scuff it and make it smoof clean with some thiner blow off tack it down...paint it about 2 to 3 coats

  • A master with great technique and loads of patience that makes for a great outcome.

  • My bass is getting famous! ;)

  • is it possible to use a paint stripper then just a light sand and some stain and sealer to give it a wood finish?

  • Dont use paint stripper as it can get into the wood and affect the new paint.better to scrape the paint off then sand.

  • that is true but i am not puttin on another paint job. its just gonna be a straight wood finish. so would the stripper still suffice

  • I totally agree. New to Youtube but not new to painting. Stuff like Aircraft stipper will embed paint in the pores and possible cause pinholes or solvent pop. Nice job and I havent seen people use the good ol Siphon Guns in a while. I like em better thn the standard HVLP guns. Just my preferance. Also sanding will help level out imperfections, so in the long run makes for a better prep job. Nice lookin project you go there.

  • what is that he's spraying on

  • laquer

  • cellulose matt lacquer

  • i would take it to a professional dude, they would have to dip it in this wierd shit:P

  • will it wreck my guitar if i spray paint it white even though there is already paint on it and lacquer>>>>>?

  • strip it first

  • hey men how to strip the old paint of my guitar? its kinda hard to remove is there easy way to remove it???

  • thick (coarse) sandpaper, like, 60 grit...and a sanding block, and SOME ELBOW GREASE

  • try scraping the guitar, use a metal scraper keep the edge sharp.

    then sand 120,180,240,320grit.

just another way to do it

  • its possible to over paint electric guitars

usually no problem,if in doubt spray a barrier coat first.acoustics are better stripped then painted

  • im kinda stupid but i dont have that kind of equipment to finish a guitar

would spray paint work or will it damage my guitar?

  • Spray Paint Works Fine... I've Never Used Gloss Spray Paint But Matte And Then A Clear Lacquer Has Worked Fine On 2 Of My Homemade Guitars... You Just Have To Let It Set Properly, Get A Nice Flat Finish And Let The Lacquer Have A Good Week Or So To Dry...

  • as an addition to echos comment remember to wetsand w/ 800 ,1000, 1500, and 2000 grit sandpaper. after ur done then Buff it. to get a profesional looking reflection

  • oh ok thanks dude

    =]

  • How did you learn to do all this? Did you go to school for it or did you just teach yourself?

  • I learned in a garage painting cars some years back

  • hey i want to paint my neck through guitar. i want to paint the back of neck and body and head. i cant take off the neck though do you have any suggestions how i could hang it up?

  • I use the tuner holes to hang guitars.

You could screw a hook into the rear strap stud hole.

  • i use a car spray... is it okay?...

  • If I do this to my guitar will it look all shiny? )Like a glossed guitar) or will will turn a dull color after it dries? Im gonna repaint my guitar.

  • I used matt lacquer on this guitar, it dries with a

satin look. For a full gloss use gloss lacquer.

  • i had sanded my guitar down and painted it but its really uneven coat and especially on the sides of the guitar. I sanded it flat on a table shud i have had it standing upright? Should i sand and repaint?

  • If it's really uneven sand and repaint.

when repainting spray evenly, hang to dry.

  • ah excuse me sir i have a problem with my guitar body ......what should i do after sanding it.....should i paint it already?...tnx

  • yes, paint as soon as possible.

  • I like the spray thats makes it shiny : )

  • inbetween sprays you were wiping it with a cloth.. how long after spraying were you wiping it?

    and why?

    looks very nice!

  • It's a tac-cloth, use after a rub down between coats, it removes any dust.

  • Hey man what cained of paint would you recomend to use in a guitar

I am working on a project

  • I use cellulose if I'm painting a musical instrument, for colour I would use a stain in my lacquer or sealer, The more stain the more depth of colour. Finish with a clear coat, matt or gloss.

  • Dude, is that lacquer or oil you are spraying? Looks fantastic btw.

  • Thanks for all comments.

    its cellulose matt lacquer.

  • One question. I want customize a guitar. But if I bought an electric guitar, can i draw and paint immediately, or I need to remove the paint before? Please tell me!

  • it depends on how you want to customise the guitar, whether the paint stays on or not usually there is no need, but the surface must be grease free and the new paint must have a good key.

  • Nice job Billy, it's amazing to see the spray bring the wood alive like that. Like how my guitar makes a cameo appearance at the end.

  • Thanks Billy, for making my bass the most beautiful one in the world!

    Marcel

  • What a pro,another belter of guitar.nice one billy
