Roger that! So the Phantom now looks like an F-16 pit. Excellent! I had the pleasure to serve along side the Germans at Goose Bay Labrador in 1985 during Exercise Amalgam Brave. The US brought C, D, E, and G models. Phabulous Phantoms Phorever!
@torch39 They are F-4Fs made for the German Air Force. They have had their avionics upgraded to ICE standard by DASA I believe. That gives an APG-65 radar, AMRAAM capability, MIL-STD-1553 data bus, mult function displays and a host of other avionics updates. I wish the Brits did this to their Phantoms as the Tornado ADV isn't really that impressive. It certainly isn't that much more maneuverable.
Yes, the JG 71 "Richthofen" is the last unit of the Luftwaffe that operates the F-4F, mainly because it wasn't clear if that unit would survive the 2011 reform of the Bundeswehr. But actually it does and so they will switch to Eurofighters/Typhoons in the coming years.
@mushubiak Thanks for the info, i wonder if they are the last operators of the phantom in the west?? moving from the phantom to the typhoon will be a huge step change in capability..
@crotchboots My Uncle John (was in the RAF) used to say the Yanks used dirty fuel! But as you say, the truth is the J79 "smoked" no matter what plane they were in.
@allowayfreestate Yeah think thats why the RAF chose the Spey because it was less conspicuous when at military power, never realised they had to widen the fuselage to fit them though lol
which piston ring? The last time I saw one of their engines there were no pistons. The old engines just did not burn efficiently, thats all. Except full throttle. Tornados without the newer engines do the exact same fuel burn off.
this was just amazing. The German Phantom's were a smoky treat - and there's nothing more beautiful than full candles roaring behind a tornado taking off....Lossiemouth must be a wonderful place to be at times.
Oh wow. Before the BRAC closed Kelly AFB, the 149th had Phantoms flying so much of the time I was getting tired of them, and I love muscle jets!!! When they were phased out in 1986 and the base logistics center closed, the air traffic died down considerably. Now I miss the Phantoms so, so much. Thank you for posting.
@pulgabros I know exactly what you mean as I was at RAF Wattisham with two squadrons of Phantoms. It's 20 years ago next year since we retired them and I really do miss them. :-(
@planejunky Just two weeks ago on my way home in the afternoon, I noticed a jet flying towards Lackland AFB with smoke exhaust. This is Rare. Well forget home and I raced to the base and turned out it was a Navy Grumman EA-6B Prowler. Boy what a beautiful sound! They just don't make them like that anymore.
Its a pretty common sight for almost any fighter jet during warm or hot weather. The Air conditioning is really basic, and fresh air (canopy open) is what I have been told, rather preferable.
absolutely fantastic video! i can remember seeing f15's, migs. numerous luftwaffe tornadoes, harriers, f 16's and even an E3 sentry land at lossiemouth, but never a phantom. how id love to see a phantom
Can't find this dvd on the LPG store...ANy clues what it comes under?

I've seen steam locomotive smoke less than the Phantom. Love the aircraft, but really that must have been a letdown in air to air combat.

@dogchoon Careful. They'll be a bunch of idiots that think you're being serious, and try to give you a jet engine education!

Totally brilliant video.
Especially thought the line-up pf Phantom Tails was very reminiscent of the RAF from the 1970's.
Tornado at Twilight was cool too!!!

Why do Phantoms taxi with their canopies open? I can't remember seeing any other aircraft do that, but yet I have seen lots of Phantoms.
