  • Really loved the video, you explain things well. Can I expect the same out of powered speakers instead of an amp, when it comes to volume setting on my speakers?

  • Please can you do a video about how to acsurely set up a PA speaker thanks!

  • Thanks a lot!!

  • wow thnx! i've already made a few mixes without a set, please tell me what you think! :d

  • Just come out the interface and into the like in on each Chanel strip

  • ? This is not how I set up my Mixer. Just put some Tomatos in make some nice Ketchup!

  • I just bought this mixing board. I wanna know if it's possible to play music from my computer through the headphone jack on the mixing board so when I'm recording vocals I can hear the music and myself on the headphones but only record the vocals. It possible?

  • @blas1314 you should be able to run the audio out of your headphone jack of your computer into any channel of your mixer. Youll need an adapter to 1/4 inch jack plugs to do so... any music gear store or even radio shack will have the cable for you. Check out more tips videos at indepthmusic1

  • Great video it touch on all aspects of unity gain and it enhance my training that I received in school and will definitely relate back to this as a simple guide for someone just starting out....................

  • Good video explained well,I just bought the same desk and was turning the amps up near full so I wont be doing that again,I have two 600w mackie passive tops and a powered 1000w powered sub woofer which has its own volume running through the mono channel , just wondering can bringing this up too high on the sub damage the desk.

Also wondering could you do a vid on explaining the EQ on the allen and heath desk.Cheers

  • omfg!!!! u just made my recordings alot more understanding!!!!! thanks alot for the tips!!!

  • It's an Allen Heath cp12 so about £675.00

It's my smallest dest ATM too small for the work I do now. I never use it these days which is why I keep it for these videos. I actually thought about selling mine a while ago

  • How much was that mixing desk?

  • PFL = SOLO?

  • @tonewolfsyd PFL = Pre Fade Listen - Basically, PFL and Solo sometimes mean the same thing (depending on the type of board used and who is doing the talking). During a live performance, the engineer can press a PFL (or SOLO) button to listen just to that channel.

  • @tonewolfsyd not necessarily.... The PFL to start with is (Pre fade listen) meaning that what you here with it engaged is the actual signal as it is coming into the input of the mixer... this is a great feature to make sure that you are getting enough pre-amp gain at the input stage of the mixer... you can move the sliding fader up and down and it will not effect what you hear while the PFL is engaged. • If you got no clip light it's all good. If that means cranking the external gear do that. You gotta use whatever Is the best preamplifier for quality. If it sounds good and it's not clipping then it's all good! I usually say let the desks preamplifier do the work because they're usually cleaner amps but if yours introduces a hiss it's not the case.

Best to connect drum machines via line RCA inputs if possible.

  • the videos are very helpful! i was wondering what is the general rule of thumb for the volume level of an external piece of gear going into the mixer? I run a drum machine and pretty much have to dime it to get the signal to 0db with everything on the board at unity level. Is this safe? If i lower the level on the drum machine and boost the gain the OL LED never goes on but i do notice an increase in hiss.

    Mackie 402-VLZ3 so no PF

  • awesome, thanks a lot :D No other video has been this exact on this subject :D

  • It's also worth mentioning that many budget desks Inc my little Allen Heath have full inboard preamps not just attenuators. Also EQ is a semi amplified design in many digital desks.

  • Of couse, and thats the ideal scenario. My amps are always up full and i trim at the desk. However many entry level setups have mis matched amp and speaker combos. Maybe 1600w into 8ohm amp but only 300watt 8ohm loads. My video is aimed at giving new artists a safety net. This is why I say let the power amp do the work. But set it's limit via it's input trim attenuator incase a fader slips or you make a mistake. Even if their amp too low in power, its still potential for problem. it's easier to

  • If you have a properly set up system with correctly matched amps and speakers it makes sense to have the attenuators on the amps all the way up. They are attenuators, remember - they boost nothing. An amplifier is a fixed gain device - turning these knobs up is not "giving the amp more power" - it's exactly the same as turning down your master faders. And more often than not, the amps are near the stage and the desk isn't - all your controls should be in an accesible place.

  • I've been asked this before by email alot and it's been difficult to find time but a video has been made and will be uploaded in next 24hours! It will probably be 3 parts though.

  • I want to have a full set up guide

  • No problem lol

  • Hey man thanx this is soooo helpful.. Now I know what to do correctly

  • The amp should not clip at all in or out. If your amp is clipping turn down the pre-gain on the amp it's self (assuming you have separate amplifier) if it has no pre gain and only a master volume try lowering the mixers master until clipping stops and regain lost volume by turning up the amplifier. Always let the amp do the work.

Hope this helps if not get back to me and I'll try to sort it lol :-)

  • The tascams have 16db headroom which is tiny so best make it -5 as your average. Unity gain is more about everything being the same than anything.

  • Just set the peak to 0db rather than the average and the desk will have a headroom of 16-25db to cope with the peaks above the expected.

Sent you a more detailed MSG explaining.

  • That was in some ways helpful! What can you tell about different VU metering? We are working with a digital Tascam DM-4800 and at the moment the metering on the desk has no headroom above 0 dB. In other words: If I set my input gain at 0dB it would pretty much be clipping already. I got my next gig this week so I'm gonna check if it's possible to move my unity gain in the menu of the desk..
