To the haughty musical snob posers who are misinformed...
The laughter you hear is not audience members joking around. If you'd pay attention, you'd realize they're laughing after the funny lines in the song. The genius of the song is that it's a love ballad about nucler annihilation: beautiful, tragic, and funny all at the same time.
So much for your superior European musical tastes. You didn't even catch the irony in the song.
he also told that he thought it was a pitty he needed to leave us and move to the UK and America again, because they dont really listen to his music (as you can hear in this clip...laughing in the back etc)
On the other hand, Josh says about this show in his blog, "The show is incredible though. I haven't yet played a real honest to God rock club on this tour, & Little Brother's actually careens past rock club & on towards RAWK KLUBB. It's a sell-out at 400 people & it feels like there are more people than that in here. It's Friday & theres a healthy happy liquor buzz flying around the room. The stage is taller than a horse.... All in all a great night."
I have seen him live in the netherlands 2 weeks ago. Great artist, reminds me off Bob dylan some how. i adore this song because of the lyrics. not really nice to say but Josh Ritter already said at the concert that we actually listen to his music.. dont talk when he is playing.. just LISTEN... not laughing or making to much noise. JUST LISTEN!!! he really loved that, he even added 1 hour to the concert cause we really listened.
this song sends shivers down my spine whenever I hear it. I'm pretty sure that the missle is supposed to represent the garden of eden and how adam and eve had the choice to "push the button."
The missile is the Tree, the Silo the garden. Nuclear annihilation the eating of the fruit of the tree of life. Or it's just a joke. Awesome, awesome song anyway.
i was at this show too. it was great because this song really stuck with me. i recorded a bit of the audio on my phone and when the new album came out i was so excited. josh ritter is beautiful. i loved how much he smiled and enjoyed playing for us.
I was at this concert; got there half an hour before the doors opened just so I could stand up at the edge of the stage. In all honesty I probably could have showed up 20 minutes before the concert began and gotten the same spot. Still, it was totally worth it.
Although unfortunately not a culturally significant song considering that most are not concerned with poetry these days, I don't at all believe that calling "The Temptation of Atom" one of the greatest songs ever written is an overstatement. This song belongs in the same league as "Hallelujah" by Cohen, and "Something" by Harrison and others of the greatest songs. I sincerely hope this brilliant lyric will one day be discovered when poetry of such depth comes back in to fashion.
Leonard Cohen, and Bob Dylan brought it into fashion. Who knows Josh Ritter may catch more ears than you think. You'd be surprised how even the most shallow people will stop what they're doing when they hear a song like this, at least for a couple of minutes.
cause it's sorta tongue in cheek funny. Not outright like some of Josh's other songs, but how unusual is the concept of a love song that takes place in a missile silo?
I like the live version of this song more than the official one. It's got so much more life and originality to it...
