  • Dear Joost, please contact me, I have some interesting works for bassoon & piano that I have composed!

  • stunning

  • that is one sexy bassoon. heckel!

  • My band instructor gave me my first bassoon for free... life is good.

  • I play clarinet right now I'm tryin to decide oboe or bassoon to switch to

  • @suppur5 bassoon

  • im a bassoonist, and bassoon is why im alive

  • Looks like a bazooka, lol

  • @8000cheese It is.

  • @8000cheese god how old are you like 9?

  • @TheRegulated Well unfortunately no, I was merely making an observation about an instrument that I have very little knowledge of. So if you are offended in any way I have to tell you to not get so offended easily. If you are annoyed, then you are probably just having a bad day or you really just don't like me. If you really don't like me, i'm not that bad, we can be friends : D

  • What a jerk... Nah...Just kidding! Hey about that bank job... what if your dumb?

  • is that a double sided reed? just curious. ;]

  • He plays beautifully.

  • lol my dad calls bassoons bongs...... LOL

  • The double reed men are too attractive to be stuck in band.

  • @Triangularmeerkat I think you meant to say the percussionists are too attractive... not saying that I think other male percussionists are any attractive at all or anyinthing... ;)

  • Awesome!!! Makes me ashamed my bassoon skills are so low....

  • Is that a Fox?

  • @CloneHat no, it's a heckel. very new heckel.

  • hes got a time machine....he's clearly from the 80s

  • and yes don't even think about robbing the bank :):)

  • you are guys great in lso

  • awesome job i like your tones with the lower register, and upper of course it was very nice..you have crazy stamina too im jealous haha

  • inspiring! i love being a bassoonist for the music, and the solos he plays are so beautiful

  • hes hot

  • Comment removed

  • I play the cello but II like the Bassoon Aswel what to do please reply

  • Always expand on your instruments and follow your heart! :)

I play Piano - Percussion Instrument

Guitar, Violin, Ukulele - String Instruments

Flute, Clarinet, Soprano Recorder, Alto Recoder - Woodwind

    =) x

  • wow I play

    Play piano/clarinet and accordian

  • Cool :)

I want to play cor anglais and oboe too :\ haha ... I love music a bit too much

  • @heslop01 that is what i want to do... I play the piano, melodica, I am teaching myself to play the harmonica, i play the saxophone, and next year i am playing the trumpet for school. I think i am going to play the bassoon to eventually. and maybe the oboe

  • @Jackx598 Awesome! ^_^ Then you follow what you want to do! Never let people tell you that it's stupid ! :)

  • @heslop01 ya...besides...the more instuments you play the better you will be at the rest of them...i think

  • @Jackx598 you're right-I play 7. They start to get easier.

  • Tell me about it. I teach bassoon at schools but one of them gives me three kids to teach in the space of just half an hour. The first few lessons were just taken up showing them how to set it up. They still brought their instruments back with bent keys though. Such a stupid way to teach kids. Individual lessons are so important. They progress ten times faster.

  • I have always wondered what that key above the first finger of the right hand is for

  • @bassoon334 it's an alternate c sharp key. useful for trills sometimes.

  • @bassoon334 its usually your hign e key. The e one octave above the e above the middle c.

  • Right now i play tenor sax but in high school i want to switch to bassoon, is bassoon to hard of a switch, should i just stick with sax?

    Please help

  • Switch to BASSOON It is so much better than the saxophone (I play bassoon, bari sax, and bass clarinet and I love the bassoon the most. I started on the clarinet and I switched very easily. Make sure the person who teaches you knows about bassoon. The first person who taught me bassoon really didn't know that much about it. He just had a clarinet/saxaphone/flute expertise not bassoon. Good Luck, Bassoon334

  • ooo i play clarinet, and i might be able to play bassoon this week :D! and you say the switch is easy? that would be good. .

  • the bassoon is definitely much harder than sax, take it from someone who plays both instruments. However, i think playing bassoon is much more rewarding since you have to work much harder on it.

  • I havent played bassoon very long, and only instrument i play besides that is bass guitar, but so far i dont find it very complex, i learned all the notes lower than middle d in a month, but when you go above that, the fingering gets all fucked up :D but i think its very easy to blow, and very fun instrument to play. I'd like to learn sax so i can get to more jazzy thing^^

  • @elboberto7 How strange! I play tenor sax and am now learning Bassoon to play in highschool aswell as the San Diego Youth Symphony. It is different but not too extreme. Some fingerings are similar to the clarinet. It is a MUST to get private lessons for the Bassoon. So many things can be damaged while setting it up or playing it. Even so, it is very enjoyable to play it. Have fun!

  • I actually did this exact same thing. It is very much worth it. It is a lot of work but do it. You'll get to experience playing bass lines, harmonizing the melody, and playing the lead melody itself. I think musically it was one of the best decisions I've ever made. But always do what you love, if you try it and don't like it go back to sax, tenor is still really fun

  • ohhh i love the bassoon!!!!

  • I'm not expert, but the last note of the video, the long low note

Does he go flat at the end?

  • wow u got a shoulder strap? i need to get one of those

  • hot bassoon player :D:D

never thought that would be possible

  • Excuse me????

    Don't be insulting bassoons!!!

    (Bassoonists can snap any time...)

    I know,I am one...

  • cute bassoon player,lol

  • Man he's hot!! LOL.

  • His tone is perfect!

  • He's freakin sexy, i love his accent

  • You're lovely :)

  • god he's pretty... and wonderful hands.. geeze.

  • An Excellent class! Thank you so much for this! You have a beautiful sound.

  • his lower register sounds fantastic!

  • It sounds like your lowest note is a concert d flat, like the bass clarinet.

  • but don't forget that the lowest note is a Bb, unless you have a low A extension (bassoonists hate mahler)

  • Let me borrow that bassoon !

  • What brand is your bassoon? It sounds lovely

Also what is holding up your bassoon? I can see that you aren't using a seat strap

  • The "basson" makes a more nasal sound, though in the right hands it can be magic - listen to the Bassons de l'Opera.

French bassoons have fewer makers nowadays. He is playing a German bassoon (though, yes, Fox bassoons are "German" bassoons!) - but it is possible he is playing a Heckel, though the top joint does not look familiar with a metal ring (other than a Soulsby...) and I cannot see a maker's mark...

  • when you vibrato with a woodwind or brass instrument, do you do something with your breathe like singing, or do you move the buttons back and forth?

Or does it just come out like that?

  • well it's almost like singing, in order to acquire vibrato on a woodwind or any instrument you must use your stomach to control your breath flow. it's like almost stopping your breath and bringing it all the way back to the normal flow. This will alter the pitch of the note you are playing. With double reeds you can also drop your jaw to alter the pitch of the note.

  • Sorry, just details........it is impossible to control your respiration, and hence technique, with your diaphram, since all movements of the diaphram are involuntary. Being brutally honest, vibrato comes from your throat......just a fluteguy's opinion....

  • Don't think so!!!! You can and must control your diaphragm whether bassoonist, flautist or anything between - and vibrato almost never comes from the throat (used more for multiphonics) - and you do not wobble your jaw unless you are trying to do a Charlotte Church...!

And to clarify the types of bassoon - French or German generically (basson and Fagott). The fingering systems are different; and the Grench bassoon ("basson") is almost entirely confined to Italy, France and Brazil nowadays -

  • thats just it your a flute guy. bassoon vibrato comes more from your stomach, and i really don't want to hear how thats medicaly impossible, its just a term or an idiom or what ever you want to call it. we say it comes from your stomach because thats what it feels like when you do it correctly.

  • if you write faggot you mean worm, and fagott you mean the bassoon.

  • im looking into playing the bassoon and right now i play the trumpet, is the bassoon in bass clef??

  • it is base clef and it is a very comlicated but fun to play how i know? i play it :D

  • aw, it will take a while to get used to it when i start playing it.

  • bassoon is amazing defiantly try it

  • That's not a Fox is it? The bore looks too big for a Fox.

  • And it has a french bell, fox's have german bells.

  • Umm, no..Fox's have French bells.

  • No, I own one. They definitely have German bells.

  • so you're telling me a French bassoon has a German bell?

  • No, I'm telling you a German bassoon has a German bell. Fox bassoons use the German system. I don't know why this is so difficult for you to understand. Let me tell you again. I OWN ONE.

  • This is a German Heckle system bassoon with a German style bell and a French Bell ring. A French Bell, however, looks completely different. German bell rings are thicker and used to be made of ivory - now they are mostly made from plastic.

  • Ok, that makes a lot more sense.

  • JWD - Because you explained this, I love you. It is surprising how many people do not understand this concept!

  • what the hell is wrong with you people and bells!!! its not like they change the tone or anything! its just about decoration. god, people just don't know when to give up do you?

  • I was confused about the bell ring, that's why I thought it was a Fox in the first place.

  • Hallo Joost,

Groeten uit Nederland. Geweldig goed! Ik vond het meesterlijke les. Echt fijn en duidelijk. Je brengt het heel ver als je zo doorgaat. Wens je heel veel succes en geluk.

  • Very beautiful sound and great musician. This has been a helpful and interesting video. His advice is unique.

  • Faggot is Bassoon in German :)

So they're one and the same

    Hope this helps!

  • Close. German for bassoon is fagott (a word meaning "a bundle of sticks" referring to the wooden tube which makes up the bassoon.)

  • isn't it FagoTT?

    never seen that spelling... faGGot¿?

  • hey guys, what's the difference between a bassoon and a fagott?

  • none the spellings are:

bassoon english, fagott german, fagotto italian, basson french

  • one's the english word, the others the german word.

  • also have good posture and stand stright the whole time and seat straps are always best to use also!!

  • Neck straps or other harnesses are fine. Americans like the seat strap but they're not too common outside of America, in my experience.

  • well lets see who's in a great symphony orchestra and whos' not...

  • i played for 2 years i will submitt

  • Looks like a Fox Renard artists model

  • its not, its some thing from Heckle.

  • i realized that after i posted, odds are ANY professional is using a Heckle. I love their sound

  • A "HECKEL". Also, many professionals play other instruments. Although Heckels are regarded as one of the best, there are also other very good instruments.

  • I have actually played a couple heckels, and don't like them. I play a fox 601, and that's my favorite. Nothing against heckelers, just not my personal choice.

  • I prefer Heckels - 601 is too thick a wall for my liking.

  • Really? I think the Heckels take more effort to play, and the intonation is more difficult. Do you have a Heckel, if so, what year and series?

  • I don't have a Heckel, but the Heckels I've tried were prewar.

  • Pricey! I've only tried postwar heckels.

  • Wonderful Sound

  • Wow, I never knew a bassoon could sound like that. When you were first about to play, I thought that it was gonna be loud, but it was rather an angelic sound that sounded like it was from far, far away. Like in a canyon. Wow, that's just amazing =)

  • Dear,

If I'm not wrong, you are using balance hanger?

  • your bassoon has a beautiful sound, what make is it? did you get it in holland? simply beautiful.

  • Dear,

How can I download the youtube music score for practise? Can you show the URL? Such a beautififul of bassoon sound.

  • Thank you so much for the advice! I can never play notes that low in such a soft, gentle manner. I need to work on my vibrato and dynamics, and maybe I'll try out :)

  • I am happy to see this video. Joost, you are a magnificent bassoonist and I have respect for your abilities and commitment to teaching. Keep up the good work.

    David McGill

    Principal Chicago Symphony Orchestra

  • I started playing the bassoon about 2 months ago, and i just love its sound! This man is so amazing, i hope i will one day be that great!

  • I've never heard such a inspiring Pathetique.

    so beautiful art.

  • I'm excited to try this... i just discovered this today and tried reading it. I think i have a slight chance of at least making the colaborative.. i don't think carnegie though..

  • Dag M'vriend;

    Today I Know Love!

God Love you, Beautiful Soul, for your involvement in this project.

  • Such a beautiful, beautiful singing. You more than just play the instrument... you sing into it, so to speak, it sounds and feels like a human voice to me.

    Thank you.

  • What a great sound on the bassoon!

And I agree with you, he's totally cute!

    ^.^

  • hes such a good teacher, lol does he have a gf?

  • I love the bassoon :]

but, I can't do any high notes on it, because I suck.

  • How long did you play?

  • err-4 months?

  • Whoa, that comment wasn't from me, wth?

  • i'm a clarinet player, but i just started learning the bassoon. very beautiful instrument. how high does it go?

  • im a clarinet player also that has recently took up bassoon :D

it goes very high, like to treble clef leger line A. Bassoon is such a beautiful instrument

  • Actually, that's a bit high, but most can go up to around D in the treble clef, but it is a very beautiful instrument with a great range :]

  • very beatiful instrument. it's true- it's like singing. max- how long have you been plahying? i've only got to play a little with it for about a week

  • I've been playing for 5 years, but it's my third of taking lessons, and second of orchestral playing.

  • i've been playing the bassoon for about 4 years now, and the range is somewhere around Bb2 to F6 (about an octave and a half above middle C)

  • Excellent bassoon player. Love this vid

  • Very nice job, Joost!

    Groeten van Nico

  • Very, very good player, IMO. I liked the bank analogy.
