@ldrslucas Yeah, couldn't agree more, once Pete left and Mutt Lange got a hold of them their sound really changed, still quality but he took some of the edge off of them.
My Favorite Def Leppard Song! Just saw them again Sep 4th 2011 at MGM Grand in Las Vegas! They are SO Talented! Def Leppard RockS!!! Much Better than the no talent garbage heard so often on the Radio!
@frankisfunny2007 Heh. Actually his girlfriend was with him, she survived the crash. He wasn't racing the other vehicle, the other vehicle was in fact driving to keep him from passing him.
Also Steve Clark, the red head in this video, died from an overdose of alcohol and pills for his rib in 1991 at his home Mookie Manor. It's all explained in Animal Instinct: The Story of Def Leppard, written by Peter Fricke, editor for Rolling Stone.
@frankisfunny2007 Agreed. It's really not the same without Steve, or Pete, the dark haired guitarist in this one. Honestly I think Rick's accident forced the band to really change it's overall sound to fit the drums somewhat, but Steve made up some of the coolest riffs ever.
@hackersarchangel The only dark haired guitarist in this video is Pete Willis. You didn't mention Rick Savage. Maybe that's who you were referring to.
@PumpkinPuffer No I was referring to Pete. Think about it: After Pete left, they went into a more pop sound. When Steve died, the sound changed again. And actually Sav has dark hair in this video, but I consider him to be a Bass Guitarist. It's semantics.
@MrPUNKRELIGION kind of ignorant... the one guitarist lost his life from drinking, or was it drugs... the drummer almost lost both his arms in a car crash, but drums with his one arm, he still drums with this band... other than that, they all have survived
I saw the original Def Leppard on their first tour, as opening act for Rainbow, in Brussels (Belgium), before they became 'mainstream'. I remember me saying several times to my friend who was with me: "Believe me, these guys will become huge...". Never saw such a young band and opener making such a wOw-impression. A pity that they made such pfffff-music after the 'Slang' album (Yes, I still love that album, because it reminded me of the early days, just having fun in doing their thing :-)...).
And by the way, Pete Willis is a good guitar player but a bad composer. His riffs are too simple, that's probably why On Through The Night or High N' Dry never sold as well as Hysteria. Phil Collen is more technical guitarist and his riffs and compositions are more varying and they sound different. That is the mark of a great guitarist.
1st 2 albums are the best..... Phil Collen is o.k but Steve Clark rules.....
Mutt Lange is a great producer but kinda fucked up their sound by overproducing it......but they sold alot.....they were influenced by Thin Lizzy, UFO.....but MTV& the '80's had their way w/them.....
@dws901 I couldn't agree with you more. I really disliked the overall sound they had after the first two albums. Forget about songs, riffs, etc... they had the irritating polished, overproduced sound. They sound like a much tighter band on the first two albums. And santtuyeah.. I disagree with you. There aren't enough bands that sound like this. And since when are sales numbers the true measure of a great hard rock album? I think that is a bad way to measure a good album.
@santtuyeah Ow ow, you are really forgetting how old these guys were when they made their first two albums. Maybe the Pete Willis riffs were more simple at that age, but forgot that 'High'N'Dry' was a great step forward from 'On Through The Night'... Also young musicians have to grow you know ;-). And more: a lot of the music, riffs, guitarplaying on 'Hysteria' were done Pete Willis, forgot that :-)?
What the hell are you guys talking about? Hysteria is a great album! It's the feeling and the guitar writing in Hysteria that makes Def Leppard a special band and that is the reason why it's one of the most popular bands ever. Do you really think that they could've sold millions of records playing music like this when you can hear this kind of music in every bar you go to? I'm not saying that On Through The Night is a bad album, but to be honest, too much music like this exists.
On Through the Night was a decent album, but High N' Dry and Pyromania are epic. I like Hysteria, but I agree it is an over rated album. Def Leppard's sound changed for the worse after Pyromania and anything after Hysteria is crap. Sad to see such a great band change their music style.
I saw them in Milwaukee on what I thinkl was their first tour in the US (1981) as they opened for Scorpions (Black-out tour) who were opening for Ted Nugent (Wango Tango tour). They were great, and this was same the line-up. After that....they went downhill...
It's sad that Def Leppard NEVER got better than this song off their 1st album.... Guitar writing suffered after this album due to changes in personnel, and the band then pushed toward that over-produced, super-average-guitar, sex rock.
These comments about who ruined their sound and their writing are RIGHT-ON. Very, very, very disappointed I never got to hear what could have been...
Pete willis on the right.. He's from the bands first 2 1/2 albums.. He was fired because of a drinking problem during the making of pyromania.. The funny this is I personally think Def Leppards first 2 albums have the most meaning and realness to them.. Pete wrote a lot of the music and probobly would have kept Def Leppard less mainstream which would have been fine with me
The best album Def Leppard ever made being On through the night. those days are long gone wish they would play the record live whole thing. that and High & Dry
Love this! Never knew about this footage. To me, this DL at it's best. Melodic, hard rock but rawer than the stuff that would follow Pyromania, which to me ends the DL's best studio period, though I'm glad they got the fame and fortune they deserved.
Pete had some serious skills for a young lad. Very tasty player with the right kinda "rock" attitude that seemed to cut through. He was the pure sound of Def Le.
Great memories of my teen years growing up in California.
I saw these guys when they were touring this album in Milwaukee WI. The were the first band, The Scorps followed them, and the headliner was the Motor City Madman himself Ted Nugent. And I'll tell ya, Def Leppard was the most memorable......
Thanks so much for posting this and what a great document of a brilliant and important NWOBHM band. Saw them live supporting AC/DC at Hammersmith in 1979 and just couldn't believe how young they were - but they absolutely rocked the place and got a brilliant reception. Although I like a lot of their later 'US-rock sound' material I still hanker back to the raw sound of teenage Leppard. Thanks again!
this was the first lep song i ever heard and was hooked ever since ....the opening drum sequence grabbed me first---i thought it was a balls out rock song and had to hear more!! Too bad they lost this rock element to them.....well they lost Willis and Clark...that is why

@murrcom Uh......Phil had little to do with Pyromania. The album was basically already finished. He just came in and laid down the guitar solos. Pete Willis played rythem guitar on every song.

@demonhoopa I thought pete was pretty much gone after high n dry...i see there's credits on that album w/phil colin...i know they had some of the tracks started, but from what i've read in bio's pete had nothing to do with pyro..hense no credits..
@murrcom As I understand it, he's playing rythm guitar on every song. It said as much on the vinyl version of the album when it first came out......something to the effect of "Pete Willis - guitar backing tracks on all songs". Something like that anyway.
I don't believe Phil had any creative impact on the content of that album.
This is friggin great.... I first heard Def Leppard from a bootleg tape in 1980 that a friend of mine gave me.. He told me then that this band was going to the top... Sure enough.....
Hey...It's "Iron Maiden Light."...all the volume and half as fulfilling. Joking. This song turned my music taste around. I love On Through The Night almost as much as High N Dry. Almost.
I might be stupid now, but im confused. is this live or lip sync or both? the most sounds live, but then the backing vocals sounds too studio version kind of...
All I gotta say is thank God for the 80's! I mean their outfits are friggin out there! I know they grew up on the outlandish 70's rock and pop like David Bowie and T-Rex, but thankfully they eventually decided to let the music do the talking on stage instead of their outfits!

this album changed my life. got the tape in 88 after hysteria. first heavy shit i listened to. cant touch the first two albums killer riffs great melodys and arrangements
A friend turned me onto the album ON THROUGH THE NIGHT when I was a sophmore in H.S. back in 1980. We loved the NWOBHM bands. HIGH AND DRY was even better in 81.
as much as i love all of def leppards music and adrenalize being my favorite album. this is the best era of def leppard it reminds me of AC/DC, Thin Lizzy, Queen, Sabbath, and Zeppelin
early def leppard rocks.

They did. But everything in this video is Gibson.

Does anyone know what kind of guitar Pete Willis is playing here? Looks like some kind of one off Gibson Les Paul double cutaway. Definitely unique.

A friend turned me onto the album ON THROUGH THE NIGHT when I was a sophmore in H.S. back in 1980. We loved the NWOBHM bands. HIGH AND DRY was even better in 81.
shakey64 2 years ago 2
I love that part on Pete's solo @ 1:38
It's not on the recording of the song on the album tho--
I wonder why not
It sounds cool
