This a very powerful song wherein Angela "Works It" like only she can. I esp Digggggg the African Influence(s) that simply Captures and transports You to a very Special and very Spiritual place !!!
Ahhh! Ancient history via genetic memory! Yep, the ancestors traveled across the stars... long, long ago... to "this" place. The memory of "the voyage" is still there... deep inside each and every one of us! Funny how after all these years... Angel just "conjures up the 'genetic' connection" to these memories of the journey!
Thank you priestess! Omo lod'omo titi yo eh'ohlade... I remember!
Man, I loved this song fiercely growing up as a young gurl in Philly! The whole album from which this song sprung was spiritually mellifluous from cover to cover. Angie was phenomenol!!! Saw her at the Robin Hood Dell East in Philly along with Phyllis Hyman, Jean Carne, and Grover Washington on more than 1 occasion. PRICELESS!!
First time I saw Angela Bofill in concert, The first tune she sung was "Over the Moon Under the Sky" dramatic curtain fall weaving "The Voyage." Her range was very impressive... This was in 1980/81. Still have my autographed LP of "Angie."
this song is about the African voyage on the triangular trade route to Brazil, Cuba and ultimately the Americas. Yama Ya is the African Goddess, protection on the Seas... Wow!!!
